Film Socialism left me scratching my head, but I think I sort of got this one? It seems a little bit Upstream Color in the relationship drama, but tackled with a thematic focus on linguistics, structures of signification, power, equality, etc. I'm still hit or miss with Godard, and his style in recent films is a lot more miss than hit for me, but his use of 3D here focuses his playfulness in a surprisingly palatable way. It's the Drive Angry of French arthouse films (I'm serious, too; a lot of the stuff Godard does here is stuff Patrick Lussier was doing, and try to wrap your head around that!). Goodbye to Language is frequently visually arresting when not just downright witty and hilarious. I was laughing right away during the opening credits, as Godard attempts to calibrate his new toys (3D technology) by plastering the words 2D and 3D all over the screen and then filming his dog with varying techniques. The looping superimpositions that he employs later in the film seem to get people talking the most, as far as the revelatory image making goes, but I actually found those shots difficult to even look at. They hurt my eyes, like for real. But at the same time, I'd probably be disappointed if this film hadn't conjured up images that literally hurt my face. That's my Godard!
