On March 9, 2009, at 2:09am Korean time, Issac created this thread (http://matchcut.artboiled.com/showthread.php?1904-Post-your-top-100-in-here).

He asked for Top 100 lists.

Some time later, I took those lists and made a consensus list.

The thread for that is around here somewhere. But I don't want to link to that. It's out of date. Your opinions of 5 years ago are worthless. You are a changed person.

It's time to do this again.

Post your Top 100 lists in here.

Rules:
1. Maximum of 100. You can post fewer if you like though. I appreciate that 100 is a big number.
2. Ranked is preferable. The consensus list will be done on list mentions, with average ranking the tie-breaker. If you choose not to rank, your list is obviously still counted. But I will judge you accordingly.
3. No "one film per director" self-imposed rules would be good. It ruins the purity of this vitally important procrastination task.

Feel free to CtrlC, CtrlV your list from the old thread if you have reached the stage where all newer movies are bullshit and nothing good had been released in the last 10 years.

I will leave this open for a while, to allow people wallow in the beauty of ranking subjective reactions to commercial art.

Your opinions of 5 years ago are worthless.

This is very true.

Reviewing my top 100, the first half looks pretty solid and the back half needs some revision. I'll spend some time on an up-to-the-date version. Thanks for doing this.

I think my opinions of 1 year ago are worthless. Don't know how people do these all time lists.

It looks like you get to list one more movie. :)

Nice catch.

Next in line would be The 39 Steps, but I already have so many Hitchcock movies in my top 100. I'm going to see if I can wiggle some movies around.

In Excel, I was able to pareto out my scores. Looks like 90 is a common score I give. The reason for so many 59 scores is because 60 is my cut off from something being re-watchable. Under 60 that is considered a nay. 60-69 are movies like The Fast and the Furious , Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Torque. 70-79 are guilty pleasures, The Mummy, The Adjustment Bureau, the Rock. 80-89 are solid good movies, Schindler's List, The Ghost Writer, The Social Network, 90-95 are top tier, Terminator, A Separation, The Birds and 96-99 are masterpieces, Vertigo, Once Upton a Time in the West, The Departed, The Game, and I've given out one 100, Inception.

My top 100 would be drastically different from what I've seen so far. Not better, just different, more commecial really. :) But I'll try to sort something out.

Back in September, I decided to scrap my previous top 100 and start a new one, this time only including films I've seen in the last five years. My plan is to actually watch the movies on my old list, and, if I still think they're deserving, put them on the new list. It's been a slow process. There are still 48 movies on my old list that I haven't seen in over five years. For this thread, I added 36 of those movies, since I certainly want them to be acknowledged in the consensus.

I may have to do a bit of surgery.

I'm of the belief that movies aren't mutually exclusive, so my reasons for loving something like Contempt or It's Such A Beautiful Day are different from my reasons for loving brainless fun fare like The Avengers or Hard Boiled. However, that's come back to bite me now as I rank my list. How do you guys decide how to rank your favorites?

However, that's come back to bite me now as I rank my list. How do you guys decide how to rank your favorites?

This time around, I threw together a spreadsheet of every movie I could think of that I thought I might refer to as "one of of my favorites." Then I put a mark next to them separating them into 4 tiers, based on my feeling of how strongly I wanted them to be near the top, or on the list at all. Then I sorted them by those tiers and rearranged them within those tiers based on how I thought they should be ranked within those tiers (so I was working with a bank of 15-30 films for each tier), and that I did just kind of by gut. And then I just cut my least favorite movies from the fourth-tier out once I got to 100. Made the task take a lot less time than it otherwise might've.

Thanks for doing this, trans. I'm hoping to have mine up in the next day or so... trying to go through my last few years of viewing lists and ascertain what, if anything, from those should be making the cut now.

Cool. It'll still be up for a while. I still have two weeks in the semester left, and then another week of grading, and then sweet, sweet stats.

Ha, no, I still haven't seen it. I tend to avoid films that have even a hint of graphic animal violence. I just love me some Donald Pleasance (and it's a cool av).

Ah. Too bad. It's probably the best Kafkaesque, existentially absurd movie I've seen. Agreed about the av, though.

You weren't kidding about 5 year old opinions being worthless. Sure, some (in fact most) of the movies that were on this list 5 years ago are still somewhere in my top 100, but the order is vastly different. On top of that, some that were HIGH on the list before are outright missing this time (rewatches made me wonder what I saw in them in the first place).

I agree with this.
