I totally have pretty much all of his movies (including TCtThWahL) available to me for free and I'm tempted to have a Greenaway binge week. Might not be a good or plausible idea, but it's a tempting one.

I have had The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover for a long time now and still haven't gotten around to watching it. Once I watch some other things I've given priority I'll get around to watching this one and then most likely watch several of his films in succession.

Yeah, unless I get to one of his films this week (unlikely), this'll be the first time I won't be able to participate. By the by, can we sticky the main consensus thread?

I can understand ambivalence, but anything lower than a 5 seems a bit much. The film is technically proficient and nothing is immaturish about it, so can you give a bit more description. Thoughts laying around anywhere? Thoughts beyond, y'know, "meh." :)

Not really. All I can say is "meh." It's been a few years, so maybe a rewatch is in order, but I just remember it as being very over-the-top, and sickening in a way that was not funny at all, which I think it was suppose to be.

It reminded me a lot of Cronenberg's Crash. A trainwreck that you don't want to watch, but you continue to watch, and then, you just wonder why you even put your eyes on it.

I gave it a * 1/2, so that translates to a 3.

Over-the-top? Yes, but it's delightfully over-the-top and meta-subjectively-realistic. Sickening? Yes! Funny? Yes!

I can't see what's wrong with it.

What? I'm not his biggest fan? Well, anyway.

It's sad The Cook got such a low (by my standards) score just because it had the most votes. Someone should develop a weighted tallying system.

He's generally stayed consistant it appears. The best was Ridley Scott who started off high and nearly collapsed, only to slowly rise to a completely mediocre rating.

Drowning by Numbers at number one seems way out of whack with any kind of consensus on Greenaway's work. When I took a class on his films in art school to fufill my art history requirement, there wasn't even a chapter on it in the text book.

Blame your film class, don't blame the film.

And watch Fear of Drowning if you can. Greenaway unlocks some of the film's secrets in it. Aside from Prospero's Books, Drowning by Numbers might just be Greenaway's most complex and sophisticated work and I'm really happy to see that people appreciate it.

The first time I watched Drowning by Numbers, I think I was too busy playing the 'spot the numbers' game to fully grasp how good it was. I considered it second-tier Greenaway until I saw it a second time while doing research for a paper. It's now in my top 100.

For a lit class I took in college, our professor brought in Prospero's Books after we had read The Tempest. We watched the opening loooooooooooooooong-ass crawl, interspersed with that fucking water drip, and then watched a bit of his Caliban interpretation. We didn't watch the whole thing, partially because we didn't have time and also because it wasn't the point at the time.

After the lights came up, pretty much everyone had jaws open, some from having their minds fused into a little ball, some had possibly simply perished in their chairs and hadn't fallen out of them yet, and others were intrigued.

The opening tracking was nice, at least. Except for that fucking drip of water. I still can't get that out of my head.

The opening sequence of Prospero's Books is one of the most extraordinary things I've seen on film. I was fortunate enough to see this on the big screen in its initial run. First Greenaway experience and I've been a devotee ever since.

What specifically didn't you like about drowning by numbers? It just seems to me a very minor work. It's almost as if, on the heels of his first international co-production the year before (The Belly of an Architect), he wanted to retreat as far into the heart of British dry humor and murder plots as humanly possible. It's not a bad film; I'd say it's about par with 8 1/2 Women.
