OK, so start naming bands and/or performers you'd like to see under MC scrutiny.
Personally, I think they should have at least 5 albums, but if others disagree that's totally fine.
I'll put together a list and schedule after about a week of nominations.

I was thinking about the album thing too when I first was thinking of doing this and couldn't quite decide. I'd almost say on a week where we have groups with only four we could do two in the same week. Like do Rage and Yeah Yeahs the same week. But that might also be too much.

OK - I think we have enough bands/performers now to get started.
A couple of questions:
1. 1 week per to vote?
2. For bands like Sugar Cubes/Bork; Pixies/Frank Black - do together, or separate?
3. Should we keep the completed tally in this thread, and then each band/performer will have their own thread for voting/discussion?
4. Official releases - LPs and EPs only? How long is an EP? In the '90s, tons of European bands would release a single with 3 B-sides, thus making it an EP. Do these count?
For some special albums, we might exceptions. For instance - The Beach Boys, SMilE. Bootlegged for years, finally released and completed by Parks and Wilson. I'm going to include the 2004 Wilson release in the B-Boys voting, since it started as a B-Boys album.
What about famous bootlegs? No? Again, I'm thinking Beach Boys with albums liked Land Locked.
I think including famous Bootlegs might be a good idea.
As we get to the performers that I don't know as much about (and there are a lot), I'll leave these exceptions and lists up to the super fans.
Or, should we only go by official discography at something like All Music? That could get a little boring.

I've got the schedule up for the rest of 2014: Star with U2, ending with Pink Floyd. That's pretty cool - two of the biggest bands in the world for their time, both having new albums in 2014. Ending the year with Pink Floyd, after they release their final album (next week!) is awesome.
D_Davis
11-07-2014, 05:48 PM
Also, what's the math for coming up with the band's total number?

You know I think in the regards of bootlegs, EPs, Live albums and such we can vote for them, but it would be more based on if people actually listened. I'm sure there are some good beach boys bootlegs but will they actually get votes? So I'd say go for it.
Also agreed about some of the mixing things. Like putting Damon Albarn's new album with Blur and maybe Gorillaz as well unless they get their own week.

YYY's are one of my favorite bands so I've listened to all their stuff.

Still not quite sure how to do that maths on these. If someone else could handle that, and then let me know, that'd be cool.

So what I did is I did a vote total on each album (How many people voted) Then did each albums average. Then I took all the averages, added them together then averaged that to get the band's grand total.
So for Radiohead:
Band Rating: 8 albums - 19 voters: 7.6
Best Album: OK Computer - 18 Voters: 9.19
Worst Album: Pablo Honey - 13 Voters: 5.77

For bootlegs etc., if you want to include them in your rankings, go for it. We'll only tally up those albums that get 4 or more votes.
Winston*
11-10-2014, 11:50 PM
Not that it really matters, but I would probably do a vote total of every score given then divide that by the number of ratings given for all albums.
That way if a band has an album that 4 people have listened to and hated it doesn't have an equal say in the rating as an album that 20 people loved. Would only bump up Radiohead by like .1 based on brief calculations, but could affect others more.
Happy to help with the tallying if you like.

Yeah I did that. That's why your brief calcs are so close. I added all the ratings and the divided by how many voters. So King of Limbs for instance only got 11 voters and so I divided by 11.

I'm just talking about the overall band score. So if you had a band with two albums, one of which got 17 votes and the other which got 4 votes, you would add every individual vote together and then divide by 21.

It always blows my mind just how much music is out there. I mean, I listen to music all the freaking time, and there are well-known performers on our master list that I've never listened to a whole album. Coming up is the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and I've only ever heard 1 song by them.

I think what we should do when the new year comes up is see which of us want to be in charge of different weeks and depending on who all is in let's say four people. Then each person rotates in a 4 week period and the person in charge gets to choose the band. Then we can set up say a 12-16 week plan of what's upcoming and then as time goes on see who's still in and out and announce the next 4 week period 3 months early. Something like that.

11-19-2014, 02:38 PM
