The Rules of the Game:

How to post selections:

- Assign a rating to each album based on a scale of 1-10
- Half points may be used
- It is not necessary to rank the albums. Instead, please post all lists in chronological order, starting with the earliest album.

For an album to be eligible for the band's overall rating, it must have at least four (4) votes. Otherwise, there isn't a sufficient amount of votes to make the rating as objective or effective as an album that has received twenty (20) votes. If an album is mentioned only once or twice, I will still post that album's average (quite easy if only mentioned once) but I will separate it from the albums that factor into the band's overall rating.

Obviously this is essentially copied from the directors consensus and this is sorta a trial run to see if there is any interest in continuing to do this. I chose Radiohead since I'm fairly certain most everyone here has heard at least one of their albums. I'll probably do a couple of these if it turns out well and then if it turns out really well maybe doing a weekly thing which has been done in the past in other sub-forums might end up happening. Who knows?

As for time frame I'll keep this open for say 2 weeks or so and see how many voters we get in here.

As for the albums. The main ones are obviously up for contention and I would suppose in certain circumstances Live recordings are up for grabs if they're officially released (no bootlegs). EPs I'd say are fair game but Singles are not and no compilations. Here is a list of official albums as well as year they came out.

The Bends, though. Holy shit. One of the best sophomore albums of all time. They took the sure-to-be-one-hit-wonder status and kicked it squarely in the ass. I saw them like 5 times on The Bends tour, even had dinner with them. Just a great time all around.

The Bends is what got me into Radiohead. I heard High and Dry on a skateboarding VHS tape and bought it. I've worn out a cassette and two CD versions. Brilliant album.

Can we make a master list of, and recommend bands for the list?

This is what the music forum needs. It's been really dead around here this year.

Thirdmango

Well and see that's what I was thinking. I was looking back at some of the past directors consensus and apparently you guys were doing a director a week for a full year for a good couple years. Depending on how many people wanted to help out we could probably get that same sort of thing going on here in the music forum. So I was thinking if more people were willing to help out, we could probably end up doing another once a week thing and actually schedule it out which bands will be which week so people can listen to albums they haven't before the week comes up.

I can start a thread where people can nominate bands/performers, and then we can put together a weekly schedule from there.

I'd say that they should have at least 5 albums. Anyone agree/disagree?

Basing my ratings on what I remember thinking of them from my teens and early twenties. Haven't listened to them much in recent years. Not sure I even listened to The King of Limbs all the way through.

I'm summoning forth my teenage self for most of these ratings, but:

The Bends - 9
OK Computer - 9
Kid A - 8
Amnesiac - 7
Hail to the Thief - 7
In Rainbows - 5

The Bends is great, of course, but I always thought that was the consensus. Just is still one of my favorite Radiohead tracks, and the video is great, too. One of my most vivid memories of 90's music was seeing that video for the first time on MuchMusic. I'm not even sure if I had heard of Radiohead before that.

I listened to The King of Limbs once upon its release and I don't remember anything about it.

Sad I missed this, but even more disappointed by the continued ambivalence and dismissal of The King of Limbs. Some of you only listened to it once?! I mean, I say that as someone that doesn't like giving much of an opinion on an album if I've only gone through it a single time, but it's such a dense and diverse piece of work. I'm not even sure what I thought of it after the first time, but I instantly revisited it and have loved doing so many times since.

The second half of it (the last four songs) might be my most played second side of any vinyl I own. Give Up The Ghost, Codex, and Separator are just masterpieces in my mind. And the only singles released in conjunction with it - Staircase, Supercollider and The Butcher - are stellar stuff even if they're not technically part of the album itself. Throw them into a custom mix of the tracklist and I think it's as moving and length-appropriate an album as anything they've released.

That's because The Bends is a great album, and Kid A is not.
