View Full Version : Underrated Comedies of the 21st Century

I noticed The Dissolve's movie of the week is MacGruber (which I have yet to see) this led me to thinking about other underrated/cult comedies post 2000. A lot of people on The Dissolve thought they should have championed Hot Rod instead, which I also haven't seen. I know some other favorites are Wet Hot American Summer, Pootie Tang, Black Dynamite, and The Other Guys. My choice would be Walk Hard which I think is both a funny take on the 60s/70s music scene and taking the piss out of biopics in general.
I'm mostly talking about "haha comedies" as opposed to the indie dramadies of people like Wes Anderson and Alexander Payne. "Haha comedies" are wildly subjective and as such, much like horror movies, tend to get mixed responses depending on the person. A lot of them also tend improve with multiple viewings. I think this is why I initially avoided a lot of these when they first came out.
Thoughts?

MacGruber is great. I would also second Walk Hard.
How about Smiley Face?

Hmm, underrated rules out the Edgar Wright films.
Woody Allen's Anything Else?
Funny People I guess is underrated. I still think it's Judd's best.

So little to choose from. Bad Santa may be at the very top for me. Road Trip was 2000 so does that count? Hilarious flick. As was American Pie 2.

The Year 2000 is the 20th century. So no.
If we're loosening up the underrated definition, then I'll add Kung Fu Hustle. Maybe not underrated here, but it'll get you some blank fucking stares at the water cooler.

MacGruber is pretty funny. It occasionally flags and grates but the choice to make MacGruber a psychopath is inspired. He also looks amazingly like my old boss.

I define "Underrated" very scientifically. Basically, it goes like this: Underrated can mean "some or many people do not favor it as much as they might otherwise if they paid more attention / had a better understanding of the film / paid more attention" or it can mean "hasn't been seen enough to be rated often". Which is to say, it means whatever I want it to mean. I'll try to go "most popular" to least, with the foreign language ones being last because lol who watches foreign language comedies, right? I mean, if Kung Fu Hustle qualifies, then literally any foreign language comedy must apply. And I stole from the lists above liberally to add my support. If you disagree with anything please mail a letter to Santa and let him know that I should get coal in my stocking this year. If you want to ask why it's on here, though, I'm totally open to that.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Zoolander
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Smiley Face
Down With Love
Igby Goes Down
Bachelorette
Kung Fu Hustle

Good choice. I seem to remember it being fairly popular when it came out, but I hardly ever see it mentioned anymore.

I'm unsure whether Idiocracy is actually a comedy, or instead a tragedy.

I'm going to throw Ghost Town out there. Certainly not as laugh out loud funny as most of the examples in this thread, but it was unfairly dismissed by most.
Also while not laugh-out-loud funny, Survive Style 5+ remains my favorite "comedy" in recent memory. I loooove that movie.

I'll throw out the two Jason Segel films that I find oddly go unnoticed, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Five Year Engagement. Both of these are among the funniest and successfully sincere comedies of the last few years.

Not sure if you are being facetious, but tragicomedy (Http://en.Wikipedia.org/wiki/tragicomedy) has existed for a long time.
