Well, it would've been a "meh" week if it weren't for this beautiful release that everyone and their mother in the whole wide world should be anxiously awaiting to purchase:

Oh, and it's a long-overdue North American HD retail release of a super great movie with a new remaster.

Serious question: Is that actually a good movie, or is it more a hipster appreciation thing like The Visitor or even Jodorowsky's Dune?

I'm curious because it's DePalma but anytime I brush up against it, the movie looks cheesy.

If cheesiness is something you automatically see as a mark against something, then firstly I cannot align with that (particularly with Phantom and Paul Williams), but I also doubt it'll do much to win you over if you're not already on its very particular side. The movie is like a leathery, silky, and completely (though satirically and self-reflexively) '70s behemoth that has cheese running through its veins. And it is glorious.

I don't think it's impressed upon and inspired people like Guillermo del Toro, Edgar Wright, Daft Punk and Tarantino the way it has for just being some kitschy, unique little movie DePalma made before he made it big. It is those things, but it's also such a gorgeously crafted, awesomely composed, oddly biting, hysterical, and dizzyingly entertaining movie, all while being so unlike anything else I'm aware of.

But I've also grown up watching it (at least in bits and pieces) because I'm pretty sure it's one of my Dad's all-time favourites. So in a small way it's like trying to tell me Muppets, certain Disney movies, or The Wizard of Oz aren't all that. Like, I couldn't even fathom not knowing and loving it like I do, so I can't help but want more people to too.

I'll second Phantom of the Paradise as being pretty fantastic (if it's "cheesy", it's only in the same way lots of De Palma films can be dismissed as such), and I'm looking forward to Occulus.

Cool-- thanks for the perspective, guys.

I'm looking forward to Occulus.

I am very, very curious to hear what you think of this one.

I have Occulus on my watch list this week.

Eh, those are two very different films and I happen to like both.

But Phantom of the Paradise is a fucking masterpiece in my humble opinion. I greatly prefer it to Rocky Horror Picture Show.
