"On a narrative level The Shawshank Redemption is a movie about the power of hope in the face of extraordinary hardship. But underpinning Andy Dufresne’s story we also find a blistering critique of the prison system and criminal justice policy in the United States. The film’s narrative and cinematography work in conjunction to humanize, not just our protagonists, but all the prisoners at Shawshank. And that humanization is instrumental in facilitating the film’s larger critique the prison industrial complex."

Can't remember if I posted this before, but this is a nice breakdown of why Genndy Tartakovsky is such an amazing action director, from his visual style, editing, and use of sound design.

For the ones who haven't seen them, I also recommend Sym-Bionic Titan and Primal.

That first video is 18 minutes long, yet I see no reason to watch beyond the fifth minute. His point has already been made, and he already took a hell of a lot of meandering to even get just that far in the video. I will never understand why I see so many 10+ minute long videos where the topic at hand can be thoroughly explained in under a minute, or basically, the amount of characters one can fit in a single tweet.

As to that second video, yeah, tapped out halfway into that one. I had heard quite enough of that guy's insufferable dribble by that point...

In probably my favorite video essay series in the entire year, Skip Intro analyses how and why cop shows began and evolved (Copaganda); how Blue Bloods, hmmm, conservative view of the police not only paints a vision utterly disconnected from reality, but downright dangerous; how Brooklyn Nine-Nine, while in many was a big step forward (a very, very entertaining step forward) from the traditional cop show, still has a few limitations when it comes about pointing out the tfue realities of policing and how The Wire's steadfast commitment to show context, draw parallels between Baltimore's different institutions and keeping a constant eye on the big societal picture, makes it more than a mere cop show and extremely relevant in this day and age. Enjoy.

Hey, just as I am 4 episodes away from finishing The Shield!Yeah, I just watched this too; good stuff! Can't wait for part two, and I hope to see him make the point that, despite Vic's brutality/corruption, to still keep our sympathies with him by making sure that he never kills anyone who isn't already a really "bad guy" themselves, as he never causes any George Floyd-style incident, which obviously happens all the time with real cops. At any rate, be sure to let us know (http://matchcut.artboiled.com/showthread.php?24-The-TV-Discussion-Thread/page519&p=630850&viewfull=1#post630850) how you feel about it once you finish it; you're in for quite the ride with the last couple of eps, man!

My guess is this was because the Strike Team members, for all their faults, were way smarter than the average cop, at least when it came to dispatching violence. While they were brutal, they were at least smart enough to not get caught (I mean, do you think Vic would've let anyone film him while choking a suspect or be stupid enough to have his knee on a suspect's neck for 9 minutes?). However, if you squint, Farmington isn't completely off the hook; as the video pointed out, most of the gangs Vic and co chased were ran by POC which, in theory could mean the team itself was racially profiling the district; also, the show wasn't exactly devoid of idiot, racist cops, I mean, it's not a stretch to think that, for example, the dumb fratbro cops from the first two seasons that bullied Julien for being gay, wouldn't have attacked a POC or LGBT suspect with the same viciousness at the smallest provocation; and lastly, even higher ups were not above adopting draconian measures that would eventually target mostly POC people, such as Rawlings' seizing policy.

At any rate, regarding the show's portrayal of Vic/the Strike Team as a whole...

...obviously, the one exception to the rule of the Strike Team only killing "bad guys" would be Terry, who they obviously get out of the way immediately, and whose experience of being an honest cop who's targeted by dirty ones, while not unheard of (like what happened with Frank Serpico), still isn't as common when it comes to cop killings; what's much more likely would be a scenario like in "Throwaway", where Lem accidentally shoots the guy when he thinks he's reaching for a gun (when he wasn't), and even then, he and the rest of the team go to extradinary lengths to clear the guy's name, lengths that I doubt any of the Baltimore cops who carried around BB guns to plant on people if needed would've come anywhere near, had they framed the "wrong" person. The rest of the time, Vic and the others were mostly killing random crooks in self-defense, or psychos like Armadillo or Margos who were already murderers anyway, and if the Strike Team was a real police unit, I think they would've killed a lot more random, innocent people, especially since we're aware of how common blatantly unjustified police killings are now in a post-smartphone era.

None of this is to say that The Shield isn't still one of my favorite shows, it just goes to show you that you never know how things will age as society changes, y'know?

All of that being said though, The Shield still holds up far better as it is than if Kurt Sutter had been the showrunner (instead of just one of the writers), if Sons Of Anarchy is anything to go by, since that show was basically just all the (minor) flaws of The Shield multiplied by 10, with a cast of a bunch of irredeemable scumbags we're expected to root for just because they're the main characters, and "bro, they're so badass!". Ugh.

The first or maybe second Cinema Cartography video I've seen all the way through. Loved the selection of films. Plenty of intriguing stuff I haven't seen. I enjoyed the video. But I don't exactly love the writing. It's too... I dunno... It's too something. A weird mixture of academic remove and breathless appreciation. I guess I'd prefer one or the other? It's good work either way. I'll probably watch more.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpxdLR7sLD4Pretty good essay, but it still brings back up an issue that I have with The Searchers, which is...

Ethan's decision to randomly welcome his niece back with zero hesistation in the film's climax, which was disappointing, and inconsistent with his character up until that point, since he obviously had a big racist streak against Native Americans running through him for the entire film, which had been setting itself up for an ultimate confrontation with Ethan's hatred and bloodlust for them, so bypassing that in such an anti-climatic fashion is a betrayal of both the film's themes and characterizations. Instead, the way they wrapped things up had the effect of partially portraying him as "heroic" for merely not killing his niece in cold blood, even though just moments before, he was scalping a dead Native American just because he could; some hero, huh?

Although, even though Ethan having some moment of hesitation during the climax would've been preferable, it still wouldn't have been enough of a reckoning with his hatred of Natives, and it's so easy to envision an additional scene where Ethan & Debbie are riding back through the tribe's devastated camp, when she sees the corpse of someone who was close to her, and has an emotional breakdown over their body, as Ethan can only watch silence as he sees undeniable proof that his anti-Native hatred has gone way too far, which would've added more depth to the film's final image, since there's additional indication that he's walking away because he doesn't have the love that Debbie needs due to his lingering racism (it's one of the reasons why I think the film could use a good remake, to be perfectly honest). Doing that would've been a much better use of screentime than the comedy relief of the aftermath of Captain Clayton getting stabbed in the ass, and a great way for the morals of the film to avoid getting stuck in the no man's land in-between Classical and Revisionist Western, which makes it end up being "just" a good movie, instead of the great one that it should've been.

Willem has the best looking work out of all the video essay shysters, but I swear he's one of the dumbest in the racket.

Fav moment: When he misunderstands a game studio job ad, and thinks the word 'cinematic' has the same meaning there as it does when applied to movies.

"So how did we get here? How did 'cinematic' turn into this surface level style?"

Through people like you, Patrick. Through people like you.

VFX Artists React to Bad & Good CGI #52 w Seth Rogan. I don't watch all their videos, but this is a good channel overall. Good vids with stunt performers too.
