I wanted to bring this up because I watched it last night.... (again) to see if I can get through it. Nope. This film is atrocious. It's a poor excuse for gratuitous violence and shock factor while providing a not even timid story.

I've seen this film described as a masterpiece? How can this word be in the same senten- paragra-.... review as this film??? Has anyone enjoyed watching this film??

No, it is indeed trash. The word "masterpiece" comes from those who see the film as a knowing attempt to thrive off of audience "distancing" and tolerance for inhuman behavior and violence on the other side of the screen. In essence, that there would exist a document of such depravity, and that people would watch it, thus makes the audience and cameramen just as evil and corrupt as the characters on screen. Kind of like a Haneke film, only it's not since the filmmakers revel so much in their own debase impulses that they don't even give the audience a chance.

Eric Henderson does a good piece on the film:

It's also really poorly made, just on a technical level. I really don't like this film, or any of the subsequent rip-offs.

Hypocritical garbage that gained noteriety through its gruesome on-screen animal torture and death. The on-screen animal deaths weren't even necessary to the story, they were just there to shock and to fill time.

Features one of the stupidest closing lines ever. I'll spoiler tag it, just in case somebody cares ... :P

"I wonder who the REAL cannibals are!"

Uh, yeah, that would be the PEOPLE WHO EAT OTHER PEOPLE, Prof. Hawking.

Is this the one with the infamous turtle death?

I get confused because there are so many bad horrors titled Cannibal _________ and _________ Holocaust.

I would like to express my feelings toward this film by combining all the aforementioned responses into an almighty super-response. What that super-response would read/look like, I'll leave for you to imagine.
