Hi, I’m film critic Jebidiah Atkinson, here to announce the Matchies winner of the Best Adapted Screenplay. Let’s get this crap moving, guys. Do you see how dominant this coming year’s line-up is gonna be? And you want to rhapsodize about these choices. Next!
http://i.huffpost.com/gadgets/slideshows/328589/slide_328589_3252757_free.gif
So the nominees are
Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke, and Julie Delpy Before Midnight
Abdellatif Kechiche and Ghalia Lacroix, Blue is the Warmest Color
Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, The Spectacular Now
John Ridley, 12 Years a Slave
Terrence Winter, Wolf of Wall Street
Where’s my cue card.
Ah.
Sometimes screenplays are little more than filmic adaptations of novels. But this time we have nominees that encompass a rich panorama of adaptation studies. We have Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy all contribute to a script where I only wanted more coverage of Hawke’s son, so that I too could escape this tripe.
http://i.huffpost.com/gadgets/slideshows/328589/slide_328589_3252757_free.gif
We have films that have been adapted from French comics, but rather than adapt the nuance and gentleness, Kechiche decided upon developing out more overt thematizing in the school scenes. Great work, Abdellatif. I love that you never answer why a restaurant would let a woman masturbate in public without any reprimand.
http://i.huffpost.com/gadgets/slideshows/328589/slide_328589_3252757_free.gif
We have a film where the wonderful and bright Shailene Woodley never realizes that she’s dating an alcoholic. Way to break the stereotype of focusing on the male journey in your film, Neustadter and Weber.
http://i.huffpost.com/gadgets/slideshows/328589/slide_328589_3252757_free.gif
We have John Ridley write a film where the most powerful moments are the moments of silence.
http://i.huffpost.com/gadgets/slideshows/328589/slide_328589_3252757_free.gif
We have Terrence Winter’s work on Wolf of Wall Street. All I learned is that midget tossing is morally acceptable if I first discuss the ethics of the midget’s a priori subjectivity. Bravo.

It is I, Billy Corgan, founder, visionary genius and sole member of The Smashing Pumpkins, and progenitor of all music past, present and future. After the triumphant success of my 8 hour adaptation of Herman Hesse’s Siddhartha (http://noisey.vice.com/blog/we-watched-billy-corgan-play-an-eight-hour-freeform-synthesizer-interpretation-of-siddartha), they begged me to present this award for Best Score to this collection of phonies and charlatans.
Arcade Fire, Her

Corgans thoughts: This band's music has a bold theatrical energy that almost reminds me of my lesser earlier work.
Shane Carruth, Upstream Color

Corgan's thoughts: This tale of modern alienation could have really captured the zeitgeist, if I had not captured it already with my 2007 album Zeitgeist.

Corgan's thoughts: I invented destruction based band names...and rock music.

I voted for Her because of 8's explanation, but I'm fine with AH taking it. There was a segment before the Oscars the other night that explained some of the decisions behind the dress designs and Amy Adam's wardrobe.
I would have also been fine with GG winning it.

Seth Rogan's laugh on an endless loop is what I imagine hell is like.
I couldn't bring myself to vote for 12 Years a Slave's ensemble. There were too many celebrity pop-ups that didn't have enough characterization to justify their small time on screen, and so I'd be left with "Giamatti? Dano?" and before the characters could develop independently of their actors, they'd be gone. That's one of the strengths of something like Computer Chess for me.
Love that Upstream Color won for best score. I end up playing that one through at least once a week. And I'm looking forward to revisiting it over spring break and trying to develop thoughts out on how it engages ecocriticism...
Would have liked to see Her take best costumes, but oh well.

A director can just plug Giamatti into a scene and then not have to explain what the character's about because it's Paul Giamatti.

In 12 Years a Slave it's distracting, particularly in the cases of Giamatti and Pitt. I think the film would be better served if those parts were played by character actors, or even no-name actors.

I remember being disappointed last year when This Is Not A Film won for best documentary, which was one that I didn't care for. The Act Of Killing is a much better choice, although my favorite doc wasn't nominated.

Oops, misread Spring Breakers as the winner. Nevermind. Gravity's deserving.
I think I voted for Spring Breakers. Mostly for the sound editing. The gun transitions are rad.

What? No way.
Really? I found the film's rhythm quite hypnotic. The film anchors Seimetz's journey and then goes away from it, yet the way that the film builds out, in miniature, her and Carruth's relationship is quite masterful. And the finale, with its almost wordless building up of narrative explosion--through image, sound, and editing--is one of the singular achievements.
And those are some great Phoenix images, Gizmo.

True; I was far more interested in her performance throughout the film than Léa Seydoux's work, and I thought this reaction was counter to the general acclaim regarding those two performers. For Seydoux, I couldn't help always feeling a touch removed from fully understanding her intentions. And while that fits her role, I didn't always feel it to be intentional. Exarchopoulos, however, felt totally transparent even in those sections where I wanted the script to treat her differently.
My comment generally lies more in the fact that I thought the Best Actress race was incredibly deep this year and expected either Blanchett or Delpy to take it.

I mean, I nominated ScarJo (for Her and Don Jon actually, and if I thought Under The Skin was eligible, I would've done the same in Lead Actress), but I don't think she gave the best supporting performance of any woman last year, despite it being my favourite film of it.
The Academy and every other awards show (except with those with huge crush-goggles for Jennifer Lawrence) acknowledged Lupita, so what's one more (digital-only) trophy?
So, awesome that Shailene won! You killed it, girl! Well deserved! (I voted for her.)

I look forward to revisiting Inside Llewyn Davis sometime. Not sure if there's much there that I didn't catch the first time, but the songs and general atmosphere are lovely. I could watch Davis experience the world far longer, which befits an interesting lead even if he embraces his insufferability to an extreme at times. Main complaint is that I wish Mulligan's character had just a bit more dimension to it.
Glad to see TAoK tie for best picture. That remains one of the singular experiences of last year, and if Carruth and Linklater don't take it, I'm glad that Oppenheimer got attention (and that a non-fiction registered highly here, something I was afraid would be received with hesitance)...
Ivan Drago
