This was totally out of the blue! One of my favorite actors - not someone with amazing chops but he had a unique presence that will never be seen again.

He was this generation's Humphrey Bogart. He will be very sadly missed.

Huh... What?
He wasn't this generation's anything. He was a genius actor with mad chops.

Sorry about bring this back up - I'm really really sad to see him go as he was one of my favorite actors - but I always found his characters/acting to be very similar from film to film (i.e I didn't see much range in his performances so it seemed like he was just playing himself). Whenever he appeared I would mentally note - there's Hoffman. His personal presence eclipsed any character he was portraying - much like Bogart. That's what I meant in my original comment.

On a whim, decided to seek out the "Pig Fuck!" confrontation from The Master and the pastor's speech at the funeral in Synecdoche, New York and both became even more unexpectedly haunting as I realized Christopher Evan Welch is the one acting opposite to Hoffman in both. Welch having passed away only two months before him.

I understand, I'm just having a hard time conjuring an actor to whom that description applies less than PSH. The reality is just the polar opposite of what you're saying.
