I often find myself wishing for comprehensive 'best of' lists for certain non-genres. So let's try to create them. Try to include obscure and foreign films as much as possible. You can either submit films or other sub-genres you'd like included in the compendium.

What are the best dinosaur movies?
What are the best soccer movies?
What are the best skiing movies?
What are the best steam punk films?
What are the best live action animal films?

I'll throw some ideas out for dinosaur films. The Valley of Gwangi, Jurassic Park, The Lost World (1925), King Kong (1933). Beyond that, there ain't much, unless you want to get into fake dinosaurs like Godzilla and The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms or films that "feature" dinosaurs like The Tree of Life and Fantasia.

What are the best dinosaur movies?

I loved this movie as a young lad, no idea if it holds up, but I'm guessing not.

Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend.

Here's a few people might not know.

Soccer - Coupe de Tete
Skiing - Downhill Racer
Steampunk - The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello

Someone in some other country must have at some point made a dinosaur film. It has to have happened.

Steampunk.

Qrazy, you should totally check out Karel Zeman's The Fabulous World of Jules Verne (1958, Czechoslovakia), ahead of its time with its mix of live action and unique animations inspired by die-cut wood engravings. And the futuristic, steampunk vibe is dialed up to 11.

I liked The Damned United a fair bit. Definitely Tom Hooper's best film

Gorgo and The Giant Behemoth are both British productions about sorta-dinosaurs.

What are the best steam punk films?

Brazil
Time Bandits
City of Ember
Repo! The Genetic Opera

Good call, another good one is The Bear.

I was going to mention The Bear. Good stuff. And The Adventures of Milo & Otis if only for giving a pug the starring role they've long deserved.

Obviously Au hasard, Balthazar is the best.

I actually really enjoy early Annaud films. I think I might watch The Lover tonight or Black and White in Color.

Don't think the animals in Milo and Otis really got what they deserved.

Steampunk is a genre of science-fiction that features steam-powered machinery in a setting inspired by industrialised Western civilization during the 19th century.

Doesn't get any more specific than that. The makers of that list just threw together a number of titles that "feel" steampunk to them. Some of those are dieselpunk (Sky Captain), others are just fantasy films (Hellboy II).

Also, you lifted your definition directly from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk).

This same article goes on to acknowledge Brazil as a cinematic influence. So, I'm not sure why we're being so finicky.

Yeah, you're right.

I can see how Brazil is an influence, seeing as it uses old technology to represent the future. Also, I don't know if a steam-powered machine is all that necessary - I'd say advanced science in a 19th century setting is more than enough.
