haha! I had a goal last year of 150, and got 52, though I watched a lot of Netflix tv series, and now I'm pretty much caught up there with everything I've been dying to see. So This year my goal is 1 film for every 2 days, or 182. So far I've got 3 in 5 days, but I've also been off work 4 of the 5 days of the new year, and that's about to change after tomorrow.

I liked Slacker a lot. That's number 8 out of about 30.
Yeah, Sinatra was great. I liked all the performances, but I especially liked Sinatra's wife, and how her attachment to her crippled state mirrored Sinatra's attachment to heroin and all-night gambling. Self-destructive, desperate characters ftw.

I feel bad looking back at my 2013 list, which I didn't even bother to update after baby doll called me out on the fact that I saw very few older films. But this year, I'm going to make an effort to see more older movies. I know I'm off to a good start already, but that's only because I want to catch up on the Oscar nominees...that, and newer movies are all I've had time to see recently. But rest assured, I'll do my best to see more classics!

Meh, I watch more newer stuff, probably a 5 to 1 ratio, because it's fresher in my mind, easier to converse about with "real people" and even online (try adding a comment in here about a 2010 film you just saw, for example. Good luck finding other conversation about it in the 28 Film Discussions later thread, or an individual thread for the film where your comment isn't the first in the last 2 years, and won't be the last for the next 2.)
Classics are great, but I feel I've seen most of the ones that I should have (minus the man with no name trilogy, in my case), so any others could be hit or miss, and again something you're watching just to have seen, not share conversation and, outside of film forums/clubs, mutual appreciation/enjoyment.
I find it easier to watch a crappy spoof film that I know is garbage, but relates to my time, than a talky dramatic classic from 1953. I'm not saying it's a better film, but it's easier for me to watch. I guess that goes into me having a family with 2 young girls too, because I rarely have undistracted viewing chances except in the middle of the night, where a slow drama is just as likely to put me to sleep as it is to keep me engaged for ~2 hours.
What I'm saying, I guess, is watch what you want when you want and don't worry about what people here think. You may not watch many old films, but if they're quality, they'll find their way onto your top 10 of the year, and if they're not, they won't.

It's a total waste of time, so I just try to avoid the subject altogether. In any case, I still prefer watching films to talking or writing about them, and since I live alone I can watch all the slow and/or talky movies I like. (Speaking of 2010 movies, I just got Dogtooth on Blu Ray--fuck yeah!) Furthermore, far from having exhausted more than one hundred years of world cinema, I feel like I'm just getting started considering how many films I still haven't seen by Theo Angelopoulos, Sam Fuller, Miklós Jancsó, Kenji Mizoguchi, Satyajit Ray, and Ousmane Sembène just to name a few.

Yeah, I was able to mitigate that to some degree last year, but it was still largely films from 2013 and the past few years.
As penitence, I've bumped the following to the front of my queue (all never-before-seen):
The Conversation
Death Race 2000
The Grapes of Wrath
L'Age D'Or
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Manhattan
Piranha
Once Upon a Time in the West
Our Hospitality
Very excited.

The Conversation
Not exactly a radical claim, but I'll say it anyway: this is such a great film. I love it. I saw it for the first time about four or five years ago, I think, and it has an indelible spot among my absolute favourites.
Whenever I'm seeking something new to watch, I often find myself wishing I could find a film that is somehow redolent of The Conversation. The paranoia, the guilt, the dread, the melancholy, the David Shire score, the opening scene, the closing scene, everything in-between...plus, a substantial dollop of art cinema conventions, which only amplifies the film's ambiguity, strangeness, and beauty. So much to appreciate.

If I enjoy a movie, I stay through the credits. If I was in a theater when the credits rolled on The Counselor, I would've said, 'Fuck this shit', and left.
Man, before it was released this seemed like a slam-dunk for McCarthy and Scott. I'm not even sure I want to see it anymore.

I can't recommend it, except as something you don't pay for, are drunk, and just pay attention during the gory parts.

I'm going to avoid posting the cliche Scanners image, but my brain hurts trying to imagine this opinion existing in non-bizarro world. And I say that as a big Fessenden fan, but this film was shit. Wheatley's film is a whole different ballpark... hell it ain't even the same league, or even the same fucking sport. It's got craftsmanship to spare... Fessenden was just being lazy. And after seven years! I guess he was desperate and a random script from Chiller was the best he could get?

I saw a theatrical presentation of Mildred Pierce introduced by David Bordwell. That was pretty cool. He said he was going to keep his introduction short so there would be more time to discuss the film afterwards, and then this fountain of film knowledge just starts gushing out of him and it's still going strong like ten minutes later. The guy just exudes passion.

Sorry, I didn't see this until now. I think this is a result of expectations. I expected little from a Chiller telefilm and was surprised by the efficient nasty Lord of the Flies vibe. There's a Roger Corman quality to how the picture matches its cheapo effects and high-concept premise with a Lifeboaty vibe. It's hardly great, but I got a small kick out of it. A Field in England came on the heels of my absolute adoration of Kill List, and while I have mucho respecto for its artistic ambitions, its surreal elements grew tedious for me instead of invigorating. I wouldn't argue that one of the films is more of an "achievement" or more daring than the other, but if you put the two movies in front of me right now, I'd watch Beneath again. I fully expect to be in the minority with this opinion.

I don't know that it's good, but I know I was never bored. Certainly it's worth watching to see Sugar's uncanny ability to switch between afro and feathered hair from scene to scene.

We rewatched Ghostbusters as well a few months back. It's mildly diverting and occasionally inventive in how Ramis pulls off some of the effects. My esteem for it diminished a lot, though, partly because Isaac's right that Murray seems to operate at an entirely different register. Ten year old dd might not have been the most critical of viewers...

1. Moving (Somai, 1993)
...
It's astonishing to me that this film isn't better known. Pretty much became an instant favorite of mine on just a first viewing. I've watched it like four times now and it just gets better and better. I haven't been able to find anything else that compares to it in Somai's filmography either, though he's definitely under-appreciated as a whole.
But this movie...man.

Yeah, I'm pretty baffled as to why something so accessible and obviously-great is so little-known... it's one of the best depictions of childhood and the loss of innocence I've seen, that works as a charming and dramatically sound coming-of-age film as well as something more formal and abstract (I'm thinking of the almost Jancso-like way the camera dances around certain actions/rituals of the family). The last 20 minutes or so, and the combination of magic realism (which usually leaves me cold) and heartbreak... just stunning. And then it's like a Vincent Minelli musical in the last scene!
Hoping it gets a decent re-release or a Criterion edition or something. I saw it in 35mm at an art gallery, sadly I missed Somai's Ah! Spring which played as well... what else of his do you recommend?

... what else of his do you recommend?
His last film, KAZA-HANU (2000) is quite good, as is TYPHOON CLUB (1985). I began watching AH, SPRING a while back, got side-tracked and never finished it, though it seemed impressive from what I saw. Need to get back to it. Most of his films are available with English subs now thanks to fan-subbers online, so I need to get around to the rest of his filmography. The general consensus amongst those who have seen the bulk of his work is that MOVING is his masterpiece, which is fine by me as it'd be hard to hold a filmmaker with as (sadly) short a working career as Sômai's to multiple films of that caliber.
it's one of the best depictions of childhood and the loss of innocence I've seen, that works as a charming and dramatically sound coming-of-age film as well as something more formal and abstract (I'm thinking of the almost Jancso-like way the camera dances around certain actions/rituals of the family). Yeah, the transformation the film takes in the final third feels both surreal and completely fluid with what came before. Sômai's control of tone is just stunning throughout the film. I'm completely with you on the "usually leaves me cold" last-act-magic-realism thing, but here it just devastates me every time. There is such a great balance of precision and mystery to the symbolic notes of her little adventure that I'm just overwhelmed whenever I see it, especially the fire festival moments.

Maybe I'm just desensitised to rough patches in Eastwood's films that I'm willing to overlook it in favor of how good the rest is (but even then, there's some good stuff in the present-day scenes), and the rest is just so moving and spine-tinglingly cinematic (the first scene on the bridge, w/ Streep in silhouette trying to process her burgeoning feelings toward Clint, goddamn) that I have no problem calling it an instant all-time favorite.

It's up there with Saving Private Ryan as a "movie I can easily recut into a masterpiece."

And make it negative 11 minutes long? Cut it so it gives you time back and makes you 11 minutes younger? Not 5 minutes or 1 minutes but 11 minutes.

I've been curious about Bridges for years. Based on Boner's rec, I gave it a spin last night.
It's wildly uneven. There's amazing stuff in it right next to shit that wouldn't fly in a TV movie of the week. It's a fantasy for 50 year old menopausal women. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, per se, because everyone needs their fantasies. But the level of characterization and dialogue is right up there with Twilight and The Notebook.
I usually go for this kinda of stuff in a big way. I think this is where movies excel, but everything here is just so stacked and heavy handed I couldn't help but roll my eyes and laugh at it. (And good God, that voiceover. It's a shit story and even Eastwood can't patch it together).
The framing device would be serviceable if the two actors in it weren't so awful (especially the guy playing the son). They're practically biting their fists with all the emoting going on. It's soap opera stuff, and feels distinctly ridiculous given this was made in 1995.

Nah. Cut the "present day" bookending stuff (much like Madison County...a pattern is emerging) and some of 'berg's cringey attempts at humor like Adam Goldberg saying 'Juden' to the Nazis and you've got a pretty great movie.

A lot of this is true, but perhaps I have a higher tolerance for melodrama than you. It gets Douglas Sirky but I'm totally fine with that. Meryl Streep is fucking great in this and I say that as someone who thinks she's a wee bit overrated (at least her recent performances). Clint is also fab here playing a little against type. Pretty sure I could watch these two read the phonebook to each other and be mesmerized which is why I really don't like the cutaways to Francesca's grown kids.

But the bookend stuff is literally maybe 3-4 minutes worth of frames and it gives the impression the story is being told by Tom Hanks which gives the illusion he survives through the whole story. I think those scenes are necessary.
Or
You could argue that it's intentionally misleading to FOOL the audience since the opening transition is a very common way of representing time, and Matt Damon's character would have NO POSSIBLE WAY of trying to recreate those opening events since he didn't even meet Tom Hanks until the final act.

Either way I'm not a big fan. I always wanted to recut it starting with a smashcut to Tom Hanks' face right as the bullets start flying. No prep time for the audience. Just throw you right into the shit right after the Dreamworks logo.
Incidentally, I still think it's a very good film, flaws and all.

All right, well, this thread was easily the one I replied to most this year. Tracking my entire "new" watching history was fun. I'll probably continue with a 2015 list.

10. Manakamana (Stephanie Spray and Pacho Velez, 2013)
That's kinda lame but that's usually how it goes: once TIFF is over, I don't tend to watch much for the rest of the year. My resolution for 2015: catch up on more classic cinema. I watched my share of new releases in 2014 but not much else, besides what made it on this list and a few other things that got bumped over time (The Third Man, Marker's Level Five, Ichikawa's Fires on the Plain... not much else I can recall, though).

As opposed to the "boredom" end of film?
Films whose goals are mostly or only to entertain, as opposed to films that seek artistic merit.

Why, so you can be outraged at my choice of words? No thanks. It's just hard for me to imagine that a movie could have no artistic merit whatsoever and still be interesting. If you subtract form and style from the movies, is there anything left?

If a movie is boring the shit out out if me I don't care if its artistic.Everything in the movie, however interesting or boring, is part of the art of cinema. Everything in the movie is part of its form; whatever is in front of the camera (people, places, clothes, props, light and shadow) or appears to be in front of the camera (special effects) is part of the mise en scène, even if it's a documentary, and whatever you hear is part of the soundtrack. If a film isn't boring the shit out of you, then it must have some artistic merit.
