Remember - US release dates only. Up to 5 nominees for each category Mike D'Angelo's list of everything that had a one-week run in NYC (http://www.panix.com/~dangelo/nymaster.html) is pretty helpful.

There will be an official thread soon enough, I'd consider this placeholder.

What do you guys think of changing up the nomination process in having it similar to Village Voice on a point scale? Nominations and winners at the same time? The amount of mentions would be a tiebreaker.

I still like the idea of a split nominations and final voting period. In the past I've used the nominations to guide my viewing to stuff I missed or hadn't gotten around to yet.

You could always update as you see new films, or just wait to post yours.

I am in favor of the consolidated method. I would recommend using the point system we devised for the yearly consensus though instead of a simple 1st = 5pts, 5th = 1pt method. It always seemed a lot more fair.

Deadline won't be til February, and will be a separate thread.

If there's enough want for Costume/Makeup, we can do it, but I always thought those were weak categories.

I abstain in protest.

Yeah, I want stuff like art direction, costume, etc. back.

I don't see why those are considered "lesser" categories.

Izzy Black

I'd prefer not to have those superfluous categories. Except maybe art direction, which I think encompasses a lot of the mise-en-scene stuff outside of technique.

Good call. I was wondering about this yesterday, on account of watching Frozen and having total admiration for the design and style.

Calling it superfluous is just an insult to all the people who work on it. Horrible make-up can totally pull me out of a movie even if the rest is clicking.

It's not like we're experts on editing and sound design anyway.

Do we even care about what we think the best costume design was, though?

Yeah, exactly. Good on the five posters who got to go to festivals wanting to show off, but the turnout in that category will be ridiculously low. Production design, makeup, costume design all should be in if we're going to have "unreleased film".

What about all the hard work key grips, camera operators, engineers, and everyone else that works on a film does? Why not just do an overall best credits list for film? Well, it's superfluous. These lists aren't exactly about socioeconomic equality.

And in my view, costume design is encompassed under art direction, which is simply what I call the production design. The artistic, thematic, and stylistic look, vision, and feel of the film's overall production design - including make up, costumes, set decoration, and the non-technique aspects of the mise-en-scene - we can just count under art direction. I think this simplifies the categories and gives due respect to those involved.

I also hate how "costume design" categories always bias toward period pieces.

I really don't think I have ever noticed makeup in a film.

Watashi
12-23-2013, 08:28 PM
Well, you only notice it when it's bad or distracting (Prometheus).

It's like editing. The only time it stands out, is when it's bad.

Anytime they try to make a celebrity seem 80 years older, I notice it. Doesn't matter whether it's Prometheus or any other movie, it seems to always look kinda bad.

I've been rather fond of Match Cut's choices.

Spinal

Previous Match Cut Award winners, for perspective:

Costumes ...
Moonrise Kingdom
Hugo
True Grit
Where the Wild Things Are
The Fall
Atonement

Makeup ...
Holy Motors
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Black Swan
District 9
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Sweeney Todd

I think those are some fairly varied and interesting choices.

Ezee E
12-23-2013, 09:25 PM
Very true. The Matchies, while not important on any facet of the film world, is one of my favorite things about Match Cut each year. It's one of the few lists that actually varies from the critics world that apparently only watches 5-10 movies each year.
