It's watchable, but it doesn't even for a second try not to be a vanity project in every sense of the word. It's like JGL was trying to create a Lena Dunham-esque exploration of the male psyche but couldn't bare his soul in any way that makes him look vulnerable, either in front of or behind the camera.

ScarJo melts into her role and it's fun to watch Tony Danza play Robert DeNiro's character in Silver Linings Playbook, I guess.

Saturday Night Fever, loosely modernized with porno instead of dancing in Jersey. Scarlett's performance is awesome, she slides into Barbara's role wonderfully. This film attempts to do what I really wish Shame did- diagnose its main character and make efforts that allow them to learn to grow. The last act was good but didn't sell me as much as the beginning of the film- it struggled to tie itself up in a fully realized fashion once it ditched the flash and filth for human emotions. JGL's direction is both a little frustrating and impressive to me for a first time director. No doubt I will forget this film existed within a week or so, but it'd make a very good rental for most. Yeah, the trailer that I sat through before Pacific Rim made this look actually really charming, winning, and irresistibly acted for a film whose factors make it so that I have actually no reason to believe I will want to watch this film. No doubt it's winning.

It's pretty much exactly how it advertises itself. Funny, charming, and never takes itself too seriously. When it tries to get serious, it does struggle. The supporting characters are all pretty cartoony (intentionally so) and as remarked, Scarlett is a standout. It's a good time.

This should've just been about Julianne Moore's character with Don Jon as some douchey meathead she fucks in a 7 minute subplot. She's the only good performer or character in the whole thing. RIP Glenne Headley.

That would have been a better movie.

Nice. Might steal this line.

Whatever I say will likely just sound like an echo of what Ezee and Efron said. Though I don't entirely disagree with Eternity's thoughts, despite liking it significantly more.

This was good. I enjoyed it.

Will it leave an impression? Time will tell. But today, I am happy I saw it, but happier that I saw Captain Phillips and Gravity first.

RIP Glenne Headley.

Ah man, you actually stunned me for a second there, taking this at face value. Not the strongest performance, but I thought she was a nice contrast to Danza's character (who was especially hilarious in the sequence where Johansson comes over) and played her other-wavelength sincerity towards Jon and his father believably. Poor Brie Larson though. Glad she's in other things this year that actually give her something to do.

Kinda interesting, and better than the usual rom com fare, but the women in this film end up having so little to do. Brie Larson's silence is counter-intuitive to a film trying to articulate women's concerns, even if it's within the confines of a home where women's voices also aren't welcomed.

I like how the film ended, and how some addictions (as ScoJo's character verbalizes) are therefore seen as more acceptable than others. Not great, but kinda good throughout.
