I will never understand the hate for Scott's recent films (Kingdom of Heaven, Matchstick, Black Hawk Down, etc). Hate his 90's stuff all you want, but he's been very good 2000 and beyond.

Effective as in scary? I didn't think it was even supposed to be a horror movie.

I didn't think it was even supposed to be a horror movie.

It's a horror film through and through.

And yes, effective as in scary, atmospheric, absurd, and powerful. It possesses almost everything I look for in a horror film. I often wonder why I didn't include this on my top 100. It's totally worthy.

No matter how often I realize how much I generally don't like Ridley's work and think to myself that I SHOULD hate Hannibal, I watch it again and it blows me away again. I can't really explain it. It's a fantastically creepy movie.

I saw it when I was about 13, but can't give it a rating. I'm a completely different person now. I remember liking it, but not much more than that. That new DVD is in my queue, so I'll get around to it eventually.

EDIT: I just noticed that he's filming Blood Meridian. *sigh*

As a fellow alumnus of the school of Ridley Sucks High, may I suggest The Duellists? It's achingly beautiful, and even Ridley's staunchest deriders will concede to that film's quality. I think you'd quite like it, actually.

Weird. I liked Hannibal when it was first released, but even then I only enjoyed it as camp, and that's how most of its fans seemed to defend it. Now, I just think it's sorta boring and ridiculous. Charles Taylor wrote an amusing review eviscerating it.

Ezee E
02-03-2008, 09:12 PM
Hannibal has a few moments that were pretty creepy, but there's much more camp that it doubles the amount of creepiness. By the time we see Ray Liotta at the dinner scene, it's just unfortunate.

As for K-Fan's wonder as to why he sees Ridley Scott movies, I say it's because he generally directs different types of movies each time. None are the same. He's willing to go from a big action movie to a character-driven movie. That's rare, and provokes interest, even if you haven't liked his previous movies. I'll definitely be seeing his next one with DiCaprio.

After years of talking down about Blade Runner, I bought it on a whim recently because the 4-disc set was priced just a bit too attractively. And I have to admit it really won me over this time. I'm not sure if I'm alone or not on this, but I actually like the original theatrical cut the most.

I've now seen three R. Scott films that I consider to be more or less great: Alien, Blade Runner, and Thelma & Louise.

Alien - 10
Blade Runner - 9
Legend - 4 (I so wanted to like this more.)
Someone to Watch Over Me - ? (Totally forgettable. I can't even rate this.)
Thelma & Louise - 9
G.I.Jane - 6 (I saw this in a motel on pay-per-view and it filled the evening much more enjoyably than I expected.)
Gladiator - 4 (This is the least interesting historical epic I've seen in many a moon. I'll take Alexander over this any day.)
Black Hawk Down - 6 (Pretty good I guess. I found it more confusing than engaging.)

Yeah, me too. I remember seeing the ending on TV and thinking that whatever preceded it must have been awesome. Needless to say, I was disappointed to discover that everything preceding the ending is a complete mess that seems to be missing about an hour of its runtime.

For those who've seen Legend, have you seen both versions? For years here in the states, there was only the shorter version with the Tangerine Dream score. The DVD featured both that film and the longer "directors cut" with the original (and quite awesome) Jerry Goldsmith score.

This might sound a little strange but I think that despite the fact that Ridley doesn't have a ton of great films, he's still a great filmmaker. The man knows his craft.

Gladiator - 4 (This is the least interesting historical epic I've seen in many a moon. I'll take Alexander over this any day.)

Seriously? Blearg.

That does sound a little strange.

So... basically, you have to know how to piece together a comprehensible narrative in order to be considered "great"? What's your criteria here?

when we get to a Tony Scott consensus, I guarantee I will get the biggest dissenter award.

I said he is a great director even though he does not have a ton of great films. Judging by the thread I think many here would agree with me that his filmography isn't that impressive, but he still crafts masterful compositions and more than that he understands the flow of imagery. His films founder for other reasons... sometimes it's a weak central story -- GI Jane, A Good Year... sometimes it's convoluted storytelling, either narratively or tonal -- Matchstick Men, Legend... other times it's undercooked thematics with overcooked sound and fury to the excess -- Black Hawk Down, Hannibal.

This is why although I'm consistently disappointed with many of his films, I still end up looking forward to his new outputs, in the hopes that eventually he'll hit all the marks I know he's capable of hitting.

Well, I disagree and I disagree and what's most, I disagree that even if a director understands how to flow some neat compositions, that alone does not qualify him as "great". But here, I resign myself to your definition and will allow you to continue, unperturbed, thinking of him as great.

Great is perhaps a stronger word than I intended and the misleading element here. What I mean is that there are plenty of directors out there whose films and filmographies I ultimately enjoy more, but who I don't think are nearly as formally capable as he is. For instance, I think he's a better director than someone like Soderbergh or Alexander Payne, but I think both of them have had better outputs than Ridley in terms of their overall filmography.
