Inspired by my first viewing of Laurence Of ArabiA (of which I'm just past the intermission), I will kick off the list, I hope you're all game.
1. Overture - I cannot think of a single film with a real overture that I haven't come away with an overwhelmingly positive review.

I cannot think of a single film with a real overture that I haven't come away with an overwhelmingly positive review.Spartacus had an overture and that was pretty lame. Also, didn't Exodus have an overture? That sucked too.

The Fall of the Roman Empire and The Greatest Story Ever Told had overtures, and they weren't very good. Plus, overtures are just a big waste of time. I'm not impressed with this list, so far.

I didn't say all films with an overture are good. I said I haven't seen one yet I've disliked, and its usually a sign to ME that I'm in for a good flick. This is where you would add to the list with your own...

If there is a scene in the movie that looks like this, it is a good movie.

I used to joke that an exploding head was always the sign of a great horror movie. But ... then I re-watched Scanners and realized that was not true.

Oh and I'd go with the movie is pretty great because its great. Duh. End of thread.

One thing that usually means I've watched a good movie, maybe even a great one, is that it ends with a studied close-up of a face instead of a crane-out.

Brand Upon the Brain! is my favorite example of this.
Examples?
I love how Children of Men opens with a moment of violence, and then cuts to black with the opening title. It's not a perfect example, because there is a ringing sound, but the rest of the audio from the scene cuts off.

Amour had a good use of this trope with the couple's door being bashed open right after the silent credits. People in my theater noticeably jumped.

Elias Koteas, while not always being in amazing films, has been in a crazy amount of my favorite films over the years:
Exotica
Crash
Gattaca
The Thin Red Line
Zodiac
Two Lovers
Let Me In
All of these would make my top ten of their respective year.
