Great World of Sound is the only film I'm really interested in. I might give Across the Universe a go at some point. And eventually I'll revisit The Apartment.

Definitely want to watch Jesse James again. I agree that the cover art for The Apartment is just horrible. Makes it look like bargain-bin trash.

I'm so tempted to pick up Jesse James (one of the few films I really loved this year), but the lack of extras points towards a possible special edition down the road.

Me too, although I'm not expecting much.

Good catchup week for me. I'll check out that, Jesse James, The Great World of Sound, Across the Universe, 2 Days in Paris and maybe The Brave One.

Anyone else think that Fierce People cover looks like someone photoshopped long brown hair on a picture of Julia Stiles and tried to pass it off as Diane Lane?

I wish I had gone ahead and gotten The Assassination of Jesse James earlier this week when I could have basically gotten it for half price - and a week early! But I hesitated, and now I must pay full price like the rest of you degenerates...

Anyone know anything about that Cowboy Bebop collection? It's all six of the "remixed" discs that came out a few years ago for a $50 SRP. If I hadn't been a happy owner of the original American releases for the last five years, I'd be all over that.

Oh sweet. Might be time for me to finally own the series then.

I loved the cover art for the first box set of Cowboy Bebop, but it disappeared from store shelves before I could buy it. I'll definitely get this one. It's my all-time favorite series, even more so than any of the Trek series and I've been a life-long Trek fan. Although I thought this wasn't coming out for a few weeks yet? Oh well, just as well...

I'll also get TAOJJBTCRF.

Glad to see more MST3K getting put to disc.

Yes, highly respectable critics making it on DVD covers over hacks is always an accomplishment.

Yes, highly respectable critics making it on DVD covers over hacks is always an accomplishment.

No matter how good the critic is, blurbing for advertising is essentially a hackwork medium. In other words, to me it seems that MZS has been taken down a few pegs. Plus, dude writes for the Times. By virtue of the forum he's chosen (mainstream reviewing), he's coughing up quotable bits on a regular basis. I love the guy, but considering who else frequently plays and wins the game, being quoted on a DVD doesn't really seem like a respectable trophy.

You do realize that he didn't necessarily submit blurbs to be included on DVDs, right? The company putting out the DVD can, ya know, lift them from reviews and put them on there. My simple point, and I assume Rowland's, is that it's nice to see intelligent critics on DVD covers rather than Travers or Reed or Roeper, but I assume you'd disagree with that as well and say inclusion at all is degrading, so we might as well stop here.

He'd probably want to help its business.

Of course it's nice to see quotes from intelligent people. And I do know that he didn't necessarily submit quotes to be included. But that only furthers my original beef, that his inclusion makes his writing seem all the more hacky (his blurb isn't any better written than your average blurb), because now you see his name and you think to yourself "Okay, MZS is the kind of critic that writes reviews for DVD covers". It's a tainted medium, I guess, is what I'm getting at, and naturally the way to cure that is to include quotes from smarter people. I'm simply questioning Rowls's "good for him", because I can't imagine how it is. It's more like "good for them", meaning the people in charge of selecting quotes.

Blurb covers are a medium?

A little bit of an overstatement probably, but sure, why not? You know, formatting, content, placement, number of exclamation marks to employ, etc.

I have some of those on pirated DVDs from China. I forgot which one it was, but it had a pretty scathing line from Roger Ebert on the back. They really should get people who can speak english to make those fake covers.

Yes, because we wouldn't want people making their OWN decisions about the quality of a film. That'd just be silly.
