I give you an actor.

You tell me which movie contains their best performance. You get one vote.

Discussion might happen.

After a day or so, the votes are counted. I announce the winning performance.

We then move on to somebody else.

Previous decisions:
Robert De Niro - Raging Bull
Kate Winslet - Heavenly Creatures
Toshiro Mifune - Throne of Blood

MERYL STREEP

What's my best performance?

Tough one. I adore her.

But if I had to choose one? Probably Sophie's Choice.

Sophie's Choice for me too.

As a colorful note, I remember my mother telling me that she went to see that movie in theaters with her friends thinking it was a romantic comedy.

I think I haven't seen much of her work, sadly. But I loved her in Adaption. Too bad she started doing Oscar bait movies after that film.

Kramer VS. Kramer.

Sophie's Choice is pretty damned amazing, and perfectly fine if it wins too.

I will never see it.

Her performance in Adaptation is pretty great.

Any particular reason? I'll admit I skipped it because it seemed like melodramatic fluff.

I have very little patience for Holocaust-themed melodrama at this point.

It should be noted that the Holocaust scenes are flashbacks, and the movie takes place in NYC.

I'm not sure that Sophie's Choice is the movie you think it is.

I could make a case for Silkwood, The French Lieutenant's Woman or even Angels in America.

But when it comes down to it, I have to concede that Sophie's Choice is the stand-out performance.

The Manchurian Candidate

A superbly chilling performance. There's a twinkle of glee in her eye that she makes so remarkably menacing. I am a well-known Demme fanboy and LOVE this remake, but Streep in this film is sensational.

The Devil Wears Prada seems to stand out in my mind.

Also, Sophie's Choice needed more holocaust.

The Bridges of Madison County. The script and Eastwood's direction falter with the obnoxious flash forwards but -goddamn- Streep is great.

I would have voted for Sophie's Choice if this was My Best Performance: Kevin Kline.

Next new voter decides. Is it Sophie's Choice or Adaptation? Ideally, you will have seen both.
