I'm digging Max Payne 3 more and more. Truthfully, I've been playing the game pretty much like a coward. Taking cover, popping a few heads, going back behind cover. But it's so friggin' awesome when I just jump into the action with reckless abandon and making it out alive thanks to quick thinking and pinpoint precision. I mean, blowing up a petrol tank, jumping out of harm's in slo-motion while some thugs are incinerated by the blast, scoring a few more head shots in the process etc....

I just shot my way out of the favelas. Ended up in a derelict bus graveyard of sorts.

$28 is the MAXIMUM amount of money I would feel comfortable spending on this title, so yes I would buy it at $26 too. The multiplayer is essentially Left 4 Dead and I'm really not that interested in the single player aspect of the story. I like the idea that it's a cannon alien story that takes place after Aliens but I've been disappointed by Alien videogame stories too many times to think this one will finally get it.

Report: Next Xbox requires Kinect to function, runs multiple games at once

the console will ship with a new version of Microsoft's motion-sensing camera controller, Kinect, and that the device, "must be plugged in and calibrated for the console to even function," the piece says. The new Kinect -- which we've heard of in the past -- is said to capture up to six people at once, and an alleged image demonstrating the difference between new and old versions of the camera puts much higher specs on said device (1920x1080 color resolution, more trackable joints, improved depth resolution, etc.).

The new console is also reported to employ multitasking, enabling multiple games or apps to run concurrently, similar to mobile phones and tablets; how many apps that could mean is unclear, if true. Sony's PlayStation Vita already employs such functionality, making the claim all the less far-fetched.

The piece also states supposedly final retail hardware specs for Microsoft's next game console, including a 64-bit D3D11.x 800MHz GPU, an 8-core x64 1.6GHz 4MB L2 CPU, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB of on-board memory, USB 3.0, HDMI-out, and an optical drive for 50GB discs. For its part, Microsoft's staying mum -- "We do not comment on rumors or speculation. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform, but we don't have anything further to share at this time," a Microsoft spokesperson told us -- and Sony's the only game in town with even an event scheduled in the near future.

Just finished up Bioshock. Nothing new to add to what's been said about it from before, but wow. It's been a while since I've been so engrossed by the atmosphere of a game. The little details in each level was what really made it, from the set designs of each room to the Big Daddies lumbering around...really immersive stuff. The game feels different as it wears on, and loses a bit of the intense horror vibe once your character gets stronger, but I really loved the way the narrative unfolded. Looking forward to checking out the second one at some point if I get the time, but I might just end up playing Infinite.

Edit: super abrupt ending though.

They wouldn't require Kinect and then not include it. Kinect will simply be part of the core system. With that said, if that's true I probably won't be buying a neXt-Box. I have very little interest in non-traditional, controller-based gaming. But it will ultimately depend on where the Souls (or new Miyazaki) games end up being the best.

New Batman game this year! Woo-hoo!

As for "Dead Space 3", still loving it. I can't believe how full of content this game is. The first game took me maybe 8 hours to complete, the second took about 10, whereas this one I am already near the 10 hour mark and I am only 53% through the campaign.

I don't really understand the complaints I've read from reviewers saying that one of the biggest problems with the game is a lack of variety in environments, because:

a) there's plenty of variety. So far I've explored the flith-ridden streets of a human colony as it falls apart, several broken down ships in the orbiting space junkyard, space itself in the spacewalk sequences, the snowy wasteland of Tau Volantis, a secret armory on the planet, and in the last level I actually went inside a giant dead monster.

b) it's not like the first "Dead Space" was rich with environments - it was a massive broken down spaceship and everything looked pretty much the same. Sure, "Dead Space 2" had quite a variety of environments what with the Unitologist Cult temple and the creepy school in the Sprawl, but I'm not seeing it eclipsing the third entry

The only real complaint I have about the game at this point is that a couple of the optional side missions are "Co-op Only". I really like playing co-op games (sometimes even more than competitive multiplayer) but I like it to be an option. They should have had everything accessible by single and co-op campaign games.

Weapon crafting is fantastic, and finding blueprints for uber-weapons is always great. I just made the Mjolnir, which is a lightning gun that can also be used as an electrified hammer.

Aliens: Colonial Marines Reviews

EGM (90/100): "On an express elevator to otherworldly awesomeness."

meanwhile, everyone else...

OXM UK (60/100): "It needed to offer intense combat against an unstoppable force, deft storytelling that matched the cinematic flair of the films, and some new ideas that could have rejuvenated an overexposed franchise. It needed, in short, to be a better game."

Edge (50/100): "Colonial Marines feels stiff, shallow and dated. First announced for a 2008 release before the Aliens franchise machine prioritized other projects, it feels like more work has been retained from that initial production period than either Gearbox or Sega would care to admit. "

Game Informer (40/100): "Take away the Aliens license, and you've got a shooter that has no reason to exist. It would be like stripping the terraforming from Fracture or playing Inversion without its gravity-defying gimmick. At its best, it's barely mediocre."

Eurogamer (30/100): "It's shocking stuff, certainly one of the most glitchy mainstream releases of this hardware generation, and the sort of thing that would barely pass muster as a low budget game from 2002."

HA. throwawayacm claims to have worked on the game for a year and a half. He says that 85% of the game's campaign was outsourced to TimeGate Studios, and Gearbox's main priority was clearly on Borderlands 2.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is the best title for a videogame since Tales of Game's Presents Chef Boyardee's Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden, Chapter 1 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa.

Also, the game looks awesome and I've heard from quite a few people that it's a lot of fun based on the demo. It's one of the games I most want to play. YOU CAN SLICE THINGS.

I didn't, but I feel buttfucked because I was still sorta championing the game and the demo video shown I don't remember when was, in comparison, rather promising. But really, every one should feel buttfucked out of sheer principle here. I can, with some effort, understand E3 demo's to show of a new system like it happened in 2005 with Motorstorm and Killzone 2. But here, jesus, it's just bad especially because the demo didn't feel earth-shatteringly next-gen. That said, when the price goes down I'll probably get it unless my brother really wants it in which case he can pay for it and I won't have to feel bad about it.

Spun Lepton

Here's an article that explains why the final product looks worse than the demo.

http://kotaku.com/5984068/how-aliens-colonial-marines-fell-apart

Long story short, Gearbox started the project, had to farm it out to a 3rd party called TimeGate to complete it. TimeGate threw out everything Gearbox did and started over for some reason. Later, TimeGate sent them a pile of garbage, so Gearbox threw most of that out and started over AGAIN. Since Gearbox was under pressure from Sega to release the game (which was in development for 6 years), Gearbox just released a ganky game, knowing it would be blasted.

I actually thought "Aliens vs. Predator" from a few years back was pretty decent. It has the lack of polish of a game that isn't a AAA title, and the Predator controls are a little weird, but it was a surprising amount of fun. Multiplayer was a hoot, too.

The reviews were middling (in the 6.5 to 8 out of 10 range). It was nothing revolutionary, and the graphics are a bit dated, but it's perfectly functional and, as a massive fan of the Alien franchise, I had a heck of a lot of fun with it. Between it and "Colonial Marines", it seems like the definite one to go to.

So what do you guys think about the report that the PS4 won't be backwards compatible, but will use Gaikai to make PS3 games available on the console?

I finished "Dead Space 3" last night, and holy hell that was amazing.

Incredible ending, and the way the universe expands and evolves through the final third of the game is just incredible.

The final boss fight is about the closest I've ever seen in a video game to someone fighting one of the Old Ones straight out of a Lovecraft story. The size, the scale, and of course, the tentacles.

It was a totally bonkers, immense cosmic battle of psychic forces and disgusting, gelatinous monsters the size of planets.

Visceral has created a sci-fi video game fiction of the same quality and depth of "Halo" and "Mas Effect".

Have to let go the control sticks to let them reset and then push which direction and jump. Occasionally enemies appear behind you from out of nowhere impossibly causing unfair deaths. Not deal breakers, very few games are all the way perfect. That aside, the story and the feeling of "playing a movie" are so well done (imo, I know not everyone digs that, understandably) it far outweighs the minor griefs. Overall I really enjoy the series and really look forward to a movie version (inevitable) starring Nathan Fillion (casting anyone else is dumb), hopefully directed by someone really competent. I don't think there is another game I've played that better suited for a film adaptation.

So what do you guys think about the report that the PS4 won't be backwards compatible, but will use Gaikai to make PS3 games available on the console?

I have way more xbox 360 backlog so I hope the 720 is BC.

I don't really care about backwards compatibility. On the rare occasions that I've wanted to play PS2 games I have just dusted off the old PS2. I imagine it will be the same for the PS3.

I'm really enjoying the heck out of Alice the Madness Returns. Love these kinds of fanciful action-platformers, a genre we used to get a lot. Makes me wish more-than-ever that Naughty Dog would have continued the Jak and Daxter (so long as they were more like the first one) series in the PS3. Fun levels, neat combat, interesting visuals and audio. $20 well spent.

Yeah, it was a great game.

I had great memories of the original "Alice", as well, but replaying it (as it comes for free with "Madness Returns") was not kind to it.

You should play "Dead Space 3" :)

I never had any problems with the platforming, and it's right up there with Super Mario Galaxy in terms of platforming for me. So much fun jumping from ledge to ledge.

I'm kind of ambivalent about a movie adaptation. I feel like we already have Raiders of the Lost Ark, so it could only be inferior. However, Fillion absolutely has to be Drake.

I'm wondering if "Crysis 3" and "Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance" are both going to get middling reviews.

Most sites have their reviews of upcoming games up by the Sunday/Monday before their Tuesday release date. Neither "Dead Space 3" or "Aliens: Colonial Marines" had their reviews up until day of release, and they both received lower-than-expected ratings.

Usually the embargo on reviews is not a good sign.

D_Davis
02-18-2013, 08:06 PM
Review embargoes usually happen so that all review outlets and publications get a chance to get their hands on the game. This is so an outlet like Game Informer, or some other publication with more inside/industry connections, doesn't always "scoop" the others. Almost every major game has some kind of review embargo placed upon it by the publishers.

Understood. It just seems odd that three weeks in a row we haven't gotten reviews until D.O.R.

Like I said in my initial post about it, usually reviews for fairly big titles are out at least 2-3 days before release.

Which is why I'm worried that this week's two big releases reviewed poorly, and that's why they're being held off.

02-18-2013, 10:40 PM
Review embargoes have more to do with scores these days, it seems. Like I know a lot of major publishers let reviews with 9/10 scores publish early, but 8/10 and below are embargoed until release date. Some publishers, like Microsoft, maintain release day embargoes regardless of score, because they don't want those numbers impacting potential sales. You gotta control the message. It's the reason prerelease demos have fallen out of favor. There are studies that show that prerelease demos, even good demos, negatively impact sales. Publishers want you to spend the money to get the game in your hand before anybody or anything else can interfere with your purchasing decisions.

I'm wondering if "Crysis 3" and "Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance" are both going to get middling reviews.

First one:

Once you know what you're doing, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance goes from power fantasy to full-on power arrogance. Maniacal is the best way to play this cutting game, dashing into gunfire and shoving your sword through any obstacle, no matter its size or perceived deadliness. The supporting characters occasionally plead for planning, stealth, restraint - hesitation - but their calls come across as denial against the true nature of Revengeance. They're right in the middle of some seriously sexed up Fruit Ninja fan-fiction.

The silly portmanteau is the prelude to a starring role for Raiden, the formerly feeble stand-in for Snake in Metal Gear Solid 2. Following the events of Metal Gear Solid 4, which turned him into a twirling killing machine and redeemed him in the eyes of bros everywhere, the fair-haired cyborg works for a protection outfit called Maverick Security Consulting. Their first presidential client in Revengeance is butchered and thrown off a moving train, so I wouldn't recommend them.

After an ignominious defeat, Raiden's body is rebuilt with augmented strength, a pristine cyber-butt and a critical reliance on electrolytes, which must be absorbed from glowing enemy spines (unnaturally). It sounds gruesome, but extracting power cords in battle is a clinical process in the mind, and a brilliant hook for an action game.

Crysis 3

Game Informer (85/100): "This impressive graphical fidelity takes a serious hit in the transition to multiplayer. Though Crysis 3 has some of the better-designed maps in the series, the muddied textures are a far cry from the jaw-dropping visuals of the single-player campaign, especially on consoles."

IGN (85/100): "It's not quite a next generation experience come early, but it's a superbly controlled, tightly paced and tactically flexible shooter with a satisfyingly focused story, and an excellent way to tie up the Crysis series... for now."

Destructoid (75/100): "Crysis 3 attempts to strike a balance between Crysis and Crysis 2, but in doing so manages to lose a little bit of what made each game appealing. The result is a title that doesn't truly match the open-ended excitement of the first game nor the revelatory empowerment of the second, yet manages to provide enough of both to at least tantalize, even if it doesn't completely satisfy."

GamesRadar (70/100): "A gratifying shooter experience. Even though the campaign is on the shorter side, there are a few visual hiccups, and some of the enemy AI is unbalanced, those small gripes get overshadowed by Crysis 3's tactical gameplay, beautiful environments, and superb online multiplayer. While not treading new ground for the FPS genre, Crysis 3 is a solid shooter."

VideoGamer (60/100): "By the end of the game I was bored silly, and considering the scope of what was going on that shouldn't have been the case. Sadly, bar a few exceptions - a Jurassic Park-style hunting section in long grass, an open-ended assault on Ceph AA emplacements - I'd rinsed and repeated the same thing so much that I couldn't care less."

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Polygon (90/100): "Platinum Games has done something incredibly rare: honoring a beloved series while successfully broadening its reach into a whole new genre.

Eurogamer (90/100): "If Revengeance didn't have camera issues this would be the easiest 10 I've ever given. As things stand it's still brilliant, staking out new territory in the genre and adapting certain Metal Gear characteristics so well that it makes the competition look outrageously bad. This is simply the ultimate one-man show, worth its ticket price many times over, an experience that improves exponentially as it gets faster and as you get better.

Giant Bomb (80/100): "A thrilling and engaging experience. The swordplay is fun, and it's really fascinating to see the different spots where either Kojima's or Platinum's signature styles shine through. It also has a wild final confrontation that shows elements of both."

Game Informer (78/100): "If you have any hopes for this story building on Metal Gear lore or giving you a chance to reconnect with characters you care about, you will be disappointed. The new characters are uninteresting and poorly developed, and the old characters are practically non-existent."

OPM: (70/100): "Sadly, the combat doesn't have enough depth to trouble the genre's best (it certainly can't touch Ninja Theory's DmC reboot), and there's a disappointing disposability about the whole experience. This is a project that has been rightfully and respectably salvaged, but one that can't quite cut it at the top.

It's been generally stated that if you weren't a fan of the MGS series before MGS4 was released, there's a good chance you would not enjoy the game as much, especially since most of the time the game is reliving scenes from previous games. If you hadn't experienced that in the past, you wouldn't understand the references.

LCDs have roughly 100,000 hours of running time. That's leaving your TV on 24/7 for over 10 years. Not worried about that. And I'm not worried about my electric bill either. It's ~$70/month and a little more in the summer time with AC.

But to answer your question why... because I fall asleep with it on.

There isn't. If nothing has enticed you on the PS3 up until this point, and you weren't willing to spend $250 on one before the PS4 announcement...why would you consider getting one now when we are 6 months away from a system that will play PS1, PS2, PS3 and of course PS4 games? Internet connectivity issues?

a system that will play PS1, PS2, PS3 and of course PS4 games? Internet connectivity issues?

Where has this been said? This is what I've read:

Gaikai’s David Perry took to the stage in New York to reveal just how the PS4 would interact with the PlayStation back catalogue. It will offer an immediate and social experience. Everything from the PSone to the PS2 and the PS3 will eventually be available.

But, Perry also revealed that this service will roll out in phases. There was also no word on what the games would look like while they were being streamed or whether a dip in quality would occur, but it’s an incredible ambitious feature.

"Roll out in phases" sounds to me like 3 hyper-popular first-party titles and a licensed PS3 game at launch or shortly thereafter. An update every couple weeks or months following, and the feature completely abandoned for updates by 2015 with maybe 50 games on the service in total. Maybe you'll be lucky and be able to download the few dozen PS1/PS2 games you can get on PSN already.

Also, streaming for PS3 games, which just doesn't sound as good as downloading. And definitely not as good as popping a disc in your system (which you can't do for PS2 games on current PS3s, but you can absolutely do for PS1 and PS3 discs).

I could be wrong about a lot of this I suppose, but if someone was particularly interested in the PS3 library and was thinking about dropping $199 on one, I wouldn't necessarily advise them to wait and pick up a $400 system that will take a while to have an interesting library on its own and lacking hardware backwards compatability.

Not sure if that's meg's position or not.

I was a fan of the series. I liked the gameplay parts of MGS4, I just wish there was more of it. There's a part where you spend a few minutes watching Raiden sword fighting robots, and then you're like 'why aren't I controlling this?'.

Yeah, but that cut scene is fuckin' awesome. I couldn't make Raiden do that stuff.

Overall I agree with you. The cut scenes were waaaaay too long and there were way too many of them. But I've never played a game with such an artful blend between gameplay and cinematics as MGS4. The motorcycle chase left me almost bewildered by how seemlessly it integrated the two. A couple times I didn't even realize that the slo-motion cut scene had morphed into gameplay. I'm not saying other games haven't done it better or equally as good. Just, none that I've played. It'll always hold a special place in my heart. A frustrating, beautiful game.

Without exaggerating, it's fair to say that Sony went for the Cadillac in terms of picking processors and pixel-generators. The PS4 comes with a "supercharged" x86 CPU, an enhanced 8-core PC processor and 8 gigabytes of RAM. That's twice as much memory than the baseline model of the latest MacBook Pro line. This means that the PS4 can crank out 4K resolution (think: ultra high definition or 1080p times four) and can do stereoscopic 3D in 1080p resolution. As CNN Money's Adrian Covert puts it (http://money.cnn.com/2013/02/20/technology/sony-playstation-4/index.html), "That means it'll likely be ready for the next five to 10 years of living room display technology." Sound overwhelming? We're only getting started.

Hm. So it'll be able to display games in 4K?!

God, imagine that.

I love everything I'm hearing. That standby feature would be great for me too. As a dad, the wife and kids will leave me alone for two hours to explore a game, and the second I'm far from a save point, in the middle of a battle I don't want to redo...THEN the kid is screaming, the wife needs help...it never fails. And with the toddler toddling about, we have to lock the cabinet doors, so anything that is on gets incredibly hot. I rarely use the PS3 when the boy is about, for I fear overcooking it.

LCDs have roughly 100,000 hours of running time. That's leaving your TV on 24/7 for over 10 years. Not worried about that. And I'm not worried about my electric bill either. It's ~$70/month and a little more in the summer time with AC.

Your TV has more parts than just the LCD screen. I work for a TV parts distributor, and if you get 5 years out of an LCD set, you got a good set. Manufacturers are attempting to make televisions more and more disposable. Leaving it on 24/7 is going to reduce its lifespan and it will get dimmer much more quickly.

I have great internet and I still don't like the idea of streaming games. Until fiber is standard, I don't think its a globally viable technology.

The backwards compatibility issue doesn't bother me much at all since I dont actually own any PS games, but it still seems like an odd way to do things.

So far, I'm lukewarm on this console. To be honest, I'd probably be lukewarm on any of them since I seem to have completely given up on console gaming (I like having my TV on for shows and/or movies while I game), so maybe I'm not a fair judge.

Played through the demo of Gorogoa (http://www.gorogoa.com/). It's a cool little puzzle/tile game with a hand illustrated world. The actual game doesn't have a release date yet but the demo took me about 30 minutes.

I also played through episode 1 of Kentucky Route Zero and I can't recommend it enough for people who like quirky games or adventure games in general.

I talked about playing through episode 1 of Kentucky Route Zero last month and they just now have it available on steam. The developer originally had it where you could just buy the first episode for $7 or the whole thing (four episodes) for $25 and a new episode comes out every three months. I had only bought the first episode and the developer changed it so they are only selling the whole thing now and he upgraded all people who only bought the first episode for free. I thought that was pretty cool. Replaying episode 1 now on steam and making sure I explore everything. So much cool little stuff hidden away.

Finished Max Payne 3. Good story, good voice acting, but in the end it's the shooting action that really takes the gold. Really kickass, exciting, arguably the most satisfying 3rd person shooter in terms of pumping some baddies full of lead. Levels are fairly restrictive and mostly a variation of stuff we've seen before, but that's not really a problem. Graphics are neat in terms of animation, but they're surprisingly crude in certain areas with low-res textures. Soundtrack is stupendous, sometimes consisting of simple three-note arrangements, but they're perfect to get the blood pumping. The airport finale was thrilling, but the chase on the tarmac sort of easy compared to all the rest that came before.

On to Mass Effect 3 now. Edit: This is going to be epic. Some great moments already in the opening attack.
