I wonder if the PS3 version will be comparable to the PS2 HD re-releases of part I and II. I guess we'd have to answer the question whether the original PSP games stood up against the original PS2 games. I know the reviews were great and the games hailed as technical marvels.....for a handheld?

Yeah but the female alien is explained as being from a race that is kind of androgynous, and they are capable of mating and reproducing with any gender of any species in the universe.

It's not really an active lesbian relationship.

I don't think I'll ever complain about samey-looking environments again, now that I've played "Borderlands".

Yeah, the cel-shaded graphics are cool and all, but holy shit, 10 hours into the game and I've still not seen anything that differed from the desert terrain, and I'm still just fighting Skaggs and the occasional human "psycho", who all look the same.

It's also kind of frustrating when a good 60% of the missions you are given, you have NO CHANCE IN HELL of being able to complete until you spend several hours grinding for XP to level up.

I was given a mission to kill these two giant Skaggs. I'm level 15, and have some pretty decent guns.

I decided to take them on one at a time. I used all of my ammo, for all of my guns, and didn't even bring the first one's health down to 50%.

And if you die, sure you are respawned fairly close, but the enemy's health is brought back up to full.

And the "L.A. Noire" reviews are very positive.

Funny enough, IGN gave it the lowest rating I've seen so far, with an 8.5. I was expecting another 10 from them.

It's also geared toward multi-player, so four people at your level versus those giant Skaggs wouldn't be as much of a problem.

That said, if I wasn't playing with a group of friends it was equally frustrating because strangers will usually go off to do their own things.

Are you making sure the missions that you're doing are for your level? When you look at your mission list it will tell you what level you should be at for the mission. You shouldn't have to be grinding at all. Also are you making sure you're attacking them right? You should be shooting them in the mouth when you can and also certain weapons and element effects work better against some enemies then others.

I finished up my replay of Alan Wake and then for the first time played through the two add-ons. The add-ons were kind of disappointing since they focus on the parts of Alan Wake which are the weakest (the combat and the clunky platforming) but they weren't bad. Not really necessary for the main story or anything.

I've now played about 4 hours. So I'll give some spoiler free impressions. Love the detective/clue finding stuff. The characters look fantastic, the voice work is spot on. I'm a little disappointed in the amount of gunplay. I'm already had to shoot and kill about 100 people. About half of the city missions involve you chasing someone down and then having to kill them to succeed the mission. There is also a ton of driving. You can have your partner drive and that basically warps you to the scene but then you can't pick up any city missions.

You should also expect not to get all the questions and interrogation stuff 100%. They give you three options lie, truth, and doubt and sometimes it seems like more trial and error and if you get a question wrong (to try again you have to restart the whole case) you can still proceed and solve the case. I'm regularly only getting about 2/3 correct when I'm interviewing someone.

shaun
05-18-2011, 09:13 PM
The side missions are definitely repetitive and I've chased more people up drainage pipes during the 3-4 hours that I've played than could possibly be realistic. Really good voice work though and I'm finding it interesting enough to keep playing.

I made homicide division. Still lots of chasing suspects and climbing drainpipes though.

I'm also curious how much impact your interrogation and detective skills actually have. I've had POIs where I've gotten 1/5 correct during questioning and it doesn't seem to have any effect on whether or not I finish the case with commendation or not.

Still having fun though.

Kurosawa Fan
05-19-2011, 04:48 PM
Really digging it. I think the impact of interrogations affects how quickly you rise in the ranks. Otherwise I think they provide an alternative for how to get through the case. I failed in one of my interrogations, and rather than breaking the suspect, I had to tail him to see where he went instead. But so far I've noticed that when I get all of the questions right, a superior has commended me on my abilities.

My expectations were through the roof, and while it was impossible for the game to meet them, I am still thoroughly enjoying the style of the game. I like the focus on puzzles and interrogation rather than shooting. I think that's where the game distinguishes itself from GTA. Yes, it's repetitive at times, but what game of this type isn't? I'm sure things will get more difficult, and the cases will take longer to solve, as the game progresses, and I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Well, you can run back to the place where the translator is first found, make sure the gate drops down and just attack the first two waves of baddies from behind the security of said gate. Very sneaky, but gotta love gamefaqs. Then the final wave, in the huge place where the tome that needs translating is kept, is relatively easy due to health & magic completely intact.

It's better because it's seeing something different with different gameplay mechanics.

Different strategy is required, and I find the sci-fi universe of "Halo" the be much more appealing than constantly reliving 9/11 reprisal.

No. What I'm saying is that I'm sick of seeing heavily advertised mainstream games that seem to tacitly endorse and glorify the American tendency to wage constant warfare across the globe. I look at the commercials for MW and I see little more than propaganda. Halo's less offensive, certainly, or something like Deus Ex or Doom or whatever.

This reminds me of the time NickGlass was pissing on Monopoly for endorsing America's crooked, crippling capitalistic spirit. Though I will concede that once virtual reality and cinematics enter into it, it becomes a bit messier.

Heh. I might even say that I don't have a problem with the games existing, but that I have a problem with them being advertised so heavily. Though I guess it's a chicken-and-egg problem. What came first, America's thirst for world domination or the commercials feeding that thirst?

I do find the glorification of the American military in these games quite bothersome, as well as how they seem to demonize entire nations based on the acts of a few extremists (you know, like what the media does already).

Though I do subscribe to the "it's just a game" philosophy, I can't help but find the source of this anger towards just about every Muslim/Middle Eastern nation pretty creepy.

America also seems to have a serious (perhaps entirely justified?) persecution complex.

I like the gameplay mechanics of the Modern Warfare games much more than Halo's.

But I was merely saying that given that in Halo you play a Marine defending your homeland in a war against "others," and a large chunk of Modern Warfare is a ridiculous borderline post-apocalyptic sci-fi scenario, I'm inclined to say that their differences in militaristic attitude are negligible.

This is true.

I guess whatever nation the terrorists originate from is what I mean - the whole nation often seems to be demonized in the media.

I mean, look at the huge outlash against all Muslims after 9/11 happened. In NYC, Muslim-run stores had to be closed because of it.

Interestingly, the commercials do deserve more of your criticism than the actual games, which actually have a plot that comments on the world's superpowers' thirst for war.

MW2 specifically addresses the stupidity of a full-scale invasion as a response to a terrorist attack (and even has an "American inside job" twist to the terrorist attacks worthy of your love), and you constantly ping-pong between several different soldiers throughout the game because the supposedly heroic characters you play keep dying, to show the real casualty of war.

I vaguely remember some Christian themed games for the NES.

Tekken 6 update...whenever I get a new Tekken game, there's two things I do for training myself on the new characters, and the new moves for previous characters: buy the strategy guide (instant access to moves you see executed, $4 on amazon), and play team battle mode with all random characters. This new girl Zaphina, I believe was her name, holy hell did I cause some damage with her first time out! Wicked move set! Wow!

So I dabbled with some online again a bit. I'm new to this so...is there no balancing? My first fight was against a beginner like myself. I lost, but no biggie, I'm just scratching the serface of part 6. Second fight was against a guy with 800 some wins and 400 some loses. Really? He treated me like a newb, I handed his ass to him second round, and he won in the end, but it still seems like I shouldn't have been fighting him in the first place. My first online victory remains elusive...

Random question: what's the highest survival mode count you've ever got? I've yet to meet anyone that's topped my 69 wins in Tekken 4. :)

Quite a few. The actual "rare" ones aren't too bad because they always are in the same spot so you just need to know where to look for them (Nash Deluxe 600 Army, International Police Wagon, American La France Fire Truck for example). Most of the cars don't have set spots so all a guide or video online can tell you is "sometimes they might be in this area". The "hidden" ones are easy because they show up on your map.

As long as while you're playing the game you get in every car in parking lots or around houses you enter you should have 60 or so by the end of the game. For the last five I just memorized what the fronts of those five looked like and just drove around while finished the street crimes and eventually found them.

Adoption of broadband internet access slowed dramatically over the last year leaving 1/3 of American adults without broadband. By making it DD only, you're excluding 1/3rd of your market immediately. By making an ad-don feature, you wouldn't be excluding anyone after launch.

Yup. Been in the second disc for a while and haven't picked it up. I still say it's pretty easy to do the investigations so long as you discover the clues. There's no consequences of getting them wrong anyways from what I've discovered. And you can basically kill everyone on the side jobs and it's no biggie.

Wii owners, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is easily one of the very best games for the system. The gameplay's great, it's literally creepy as hell, and the "psychological profiling" (if you're honest) gets under your skin. I haven't seen a game use the Wii remote this well since...maybe ever. Point your flashflight, thrust to shake off monsters, put it to your ear like a phone when people call. If you want to grab something in the game-environment, you pinch the A and B buttons...like you're actually pinching something (a lapel, a purse zipper, a cabinet handle). I feel like this is the kind of stuff Nintendo wanted developers to think of when they designed the console. Impressive, immersive stuff.

Affecting, too. There's a strong story here, with a neat twist.

Where did you come up with that?

In a recent statement, Sony hinted that the PS3 would be the last really expensive Playstation console. I can see them going more of the Wii route after it took them so long to make a profit this generation. I can also see them going more towards a game-only console while still supporting the PS3 as their does-everything-media-game-player.

I think the next big systems from MS and Sony will be different than what we've grown to expect.

I think Sony will build their next system into their televisions, with a push toward downloadable content. At least, that's where I would go if I were them. With apps gaining popularity on TVs, I feel like video game systems are the next step. Essentially a giant iMac built for video games. All games purchased through PSN to avoid a game slot on the TV (though this could be a hiccup considering the recent hacking event). Considering Sony's presence in the TV market, it would be a logical step for them, something to separate themselves from Microsoft.

Now, I'm no great intellect when it comes to technology, so forgive me if the television isn't capable of that kind of processing power yet.

I've heard a ton of great things about this game. The Giantbomb guys also said that it has the best ending they've ever seen in a game.

If they're including the twenty minutes or so of gameplay preceding the ending as well, I can see it. The final stretch is truly dreamlike, full of symbolism and artful flourishes. You feel like you're swimming through the ocean of the subconscious. And that's before the twist that ties off the package in a bow of tragedy.

I finished De Blob 2 today for 360. I'm pretty mixed on it. It had a good feel to it very reminiscent of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Sunshine. The color mechanic worked well and made it more then just your average platformer. The bad part is the controls and the camera. I've played a lot of platformers in my 32 years and the controls on this one would be near the bottom. I wasn't too bothered by them during the first level or two but once you start moving into levels with multiple heights that you have to traverse the camera and the controls are fighting you constantly. Anytime you get near a wall your character wants to wall climb it so when you are trying to jump up steps if you get anywhere near the wall your character sticks to it instead of jumping up it. I'm assuming this game was geared towards kids and if there is any young kid that had the skills/patience to make it to the end they deserve a pat on the back.

IT will be the last really expensive Playstation console because they dont have to win the new format war for a 3rd time.

"Borderlands" has picked up a bit now that I've leveled some, but not to a point where it'll ever be a favorite. I'll finish it for sure, but the sequel will have to do something mighty intriguing for me to want to play more.

Really great game. The combat gets repetitive, and there is far too much of it towards the end of the game, but it's still really fun; the world is quite beautiful, and, like Wats said, the acting is fantastic.

The reason they are not going to do this will not have anything to do with capability. They are not going to want to lose the market of people with different TV brands, or even projectors.

Unless you're suggesting that they still have a separate PS4 console, but certain TVs come with it built-in. In that case, it might take a while. They JUST released the Bravia TV with a built-in PS2 last year, and they probably won't release the PS3 version until the PS4 comes out.

So anyone been keeping up on the L.A. Noire preorder stuff? They had like 5 different preorder DLC's split between different stores. They had already announced before the game came out that they would eventually be selling all the preorder stuff on the Xbox marketplace for people who wanted all the stuff.

People have been selling this DLC for $20-30 a piece on ebay. I'm not talking one or two people I've been keeping track and tons of this stuff has been selling for these prices. One of the pieces the "Chicago Piano Gun" which is just an extra gun for the game has been selling for $15.

Rockstar announced this morning and is available this morning that all the preorder DLC was being sold in one bundle for 800 points ($10) which also gives you the two follow up pieces of DLC when they come out. They also put up the "Chicago Piano Gun" for free.

I kind of feel sorry for the people who paid ebay prices for this stuff.

It's not true.

Well, it's half true. The are introducing a new program called "Call of Duty: Elite" that tracks your status in all of the "Call of Duty" games and puts it all into one main hub.

You still play the games for free and everything, but this will cost you. I'm not sure if it's one set purchase, or if it's a monthly/annual fee.

Basically, they're copying "Halo Waypoint".

shaun
06-01-2011, 05:49 PM
I believe you also get the latest mappacks included with the Elite subscription. Considering the money they make on them, as well as the ludicrous amount of money gamers spend on in-game items, I think it's going to make them some serious bank.
EEDAR's Jesse Divnich told IndustryGamers he thinks the monthly subscription price "will range in the $4.99 area [about £3]", and that Elite could penetrate up to 20 percent of Modern Warfare 3 purchasers.Even if that's an aggressive estimate, it'd still be worth $15m/month.

In the past two years, most every game I've played was on hard or veteran difficulty setting, but God of War 2 is the one that finally forced me to dial down from hard to easy very close to the end. I'm glad I got done with that. Tremendous game, but I did feel like I had fought a thousand battles. :D

Bayonetta was tough, but it teaches you all you need to know and I found out that if you actively try to apply those skills, then you will survive. If anything, its boss battles were more about endurance than genuine toughness although I didn't play on hard.

Gonna start Dead Space 2 now.

I finished up all the L.A. Noire DLC so I needed something else to play so I picked up Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition today for $20. The only other Bioware series I've played is Mass Effect and it's one of my favorite series.

I'm 6 hours in so far and I'm enjoying it. It lack some of the polish I expected from playing the Mass Effect series and the dialog system is taking some getting used to. I'm used to my Mass Effect system where I go through all the regular dialog options to get info and then choose good or bad depending on what side I'm playing. Dragon Age seems to just have a bunch of dialog options where I basically just pick one not knowing what the response is going to be but I'm just rolling with it.

But besides that I'm having alot of fun. It reminds me a little of Fable II.

I liked the game, but in the end it felt a little too much like Baldur's Gate meets KOTOR for Dummies.

You'll get used to the dialogue trees. Most of the time it's still painfully obvious which is the good/neutral/psychotic asshole response.

What's this, successful attack #10 or 11?

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/06/02/us-sony-idUSTRE74Q1EC20110602

The group, which calls itself LulzSec, said on Thursday that it broke into servers that run Sony Pictures Entertainment websites, and then compromised the personal information of more than 1 million Sony customers.
Our goal here is not to come across as master hackers, hence what we're about to reveal: SonyPictures.com was owned by a very simple SQL injection, one of the most primitive and common vulnerabilities, as we should all know by now.

From a single injection, we accessed EVERYTHING. Why do you put such faith in a company that allows itself to become open to these simple attacks?

What's worse is that every bit of data we took wasn't encrypted. Sony stored over 1,000,000 passwords of its customers in plaintext, which means it's just a matter of taking it. This is disgraceful and insecure: they were asking for it.

Just beat Metroid II for the Game Boy...

1. Super Metroid
2. Metroid Prime
3. Metroid Prime: Corruption
4. Metroid Prime: Echoes
5. Metroid II: Return of Samus
6. Metroid
7. Metroid: Other M

Now I have an urge to buy a GBA and finish up the whole damn series.

So I picked up a used GBA SP and a copy of Metroid Fusion and played through it. Impressive game for the most part. Some cool variations on previous skills, like more strategic shine-sparking and the ability to hang from ledges. Big, bold colorful graphics. Some fun, tough boss fights. A diverse, interlinking environment. At the same time, the game plans some irksome seeds that eventually blossomed into the unfortunate Other M. Namely: a too-cartoonish aesthetic, tedious narration, and over-directed gameplay that features Samus bossed around. I also disliked the final battle, which borrowed far too many elements from the Super Metroid finale (a finale that, arguably, all of the series and all of gaming leans too heavily upon). Still, the second-best 2-D Metroid is inevitably a mostly enjoyable, satisfying experience.

I thought that I'd be done with the series once I finished this and Zero Mission, but there's also Metroid Prime: Hunters for the DS. Dammit! Regardless, I have a lot of things I'll want to say about the series as a whole once I'm done.

Depends if this is the voice they cast for the actual game. I suspect not. Especially with their track record - the last three or four games were brilliantly voiced by Keeley Hawes.
EDIT: Just found a comment from someone involved with the production, and he says she's definitely British, and not really famous.

I've never been a MGS fan. I beat the first one and liked it but played 2-4 and got bored within an hour and gave up.

I'm superstoked for that Silent Hill compilation. I wish it was 1-3 instead of just 2-3 but I'll take what I can get.

A hour into Metal Gear Solid 2 is barely scratching the surface of the game. Also, why would you continue to play the other games if you've never fully played the others?

I'm always willing to give games a chance. My brother owned 3 and 4 was one of the first games I rented when I got my PS3.

Why would I continue to play through a game that I'm not enjoying? An hour is far more then enough time to tell if you are going to like a game or not. I'm not going to spend 8-10 playing through a game I dislike.

I did that with Final Fantasy XIII on PS3. Got all the way to the final boss, and then didn't even bother trying it. I won't be doing that again.

Loved MGS 2 until you started with the blonde guy. Didn't bother after an hour with him

That whiny little bitch made up for it in MGS4: Guns of the Patriots.

I'm kind of looking forward to that new Metal Gear Solid game where you play as Raiden and cut watermelons up.

Oh. So after weeks of no service and anticipating my free copy of inFamous, PSN waited till now to mention you had to have an account before April 20 to get anything from the Welcome Back package. Super awesome.

Fuckers.

Why would you ever think that they'd give free shit to people who sign up after the outage happened?

Because that's the way it read on their updates.
