Divinity: Original Sin II -- Terrible title, I know. But, I wanted to play a fantasy RPG so I could play some kind of magic user, and this has gotten pretty incredible scores by the video gaming sites. And it's definitely got the depth I was seeking. But, holy shit, the combat is fucking DIFFICULT as hell. I've already gotten my ass handed to me one too many times to count. Been feeling a bit discouraged, honestly.

It may sound sacrilegious, but Mario 64 doesn't hold up well at all. The complete lack of any quality of life improvements or even minor graphical enhancements (didn't even up resolution or framerate) make it feel even rougher. It is a straight port.

Sunshine I think they upped to 16x9 native, but that's it. The controls are still awful, especially the camera (which still cannot even be inverted).

Galaxy is the only title in the package where some decent work went into improving it for for Switch, but it was also the most modern and required the least work, which also results in the work being mostly invisible.

I was really surprised by how poorly Mario 64 holds up. It is nearly unplayable now. Felt like a constant battle agaons the controller to get Mario and/or the camera to do what I wanted.

TL;DR - 2/3 of the games are fun nostalgia pieces and little more, especially with the complete lack of any work put into cleaning them up. The absence of Mario Galaxy 2 is painful.

I am so glad I waited for the PS5 version to download, because wow.

I am completely absorbed already. The world, the mood, the characters...holy cow.

I am playing it in graphics mode for all the pretty ray tracing and visual flairs, and it is amazing.

Also love what they've done with the PS5's haptic feedback. The shooting feels so cool.

Who knows. What hurts my brain is trying to estimate how much the unavailability stems from chip/console shortages vs. overwhelming demand. Like, it could be the case it's breaking sales record because no one can get one.

Possible for sure, but both Sony and Microsoft have said that they are having major production and order fulfillment problems because of this chip shortage.

So, "significantly less consoles being made than expected" doesn't seem to jive with "we're having our best consoles sales year ever".

Unless they're doing something kinda shady and counting pre-pre-orders as sales.

Been playing Prominence Poker online quite a bit recently. Picked up a $10 game called Space Crew last night and played through the tutorial. Seems fun. Also picked up Civilization 6. I've never played any of them and I've heard it's a real time-eater, but I've always been curious. Tutorial for that game appears to be next to non-existent, though, so I've barely touched it.

The final boss for the Foundation DLC of Control is so hard it is absurd. Harder than anything I've come up against in a From game.

Took a break from Control to try out Hitman (2016).

Super cool. Not sure I'll ever be very good at it, though. I'm not very good at stealth games. Adding the kind of "puzzle game" element on top of it, and I'm nearly lost.

Be careful when you actually go to download them. For some reason when the game is both PS4 and PS5, it defaults to downloading either BOTH, or only the PS4 version.

Happened to me with both Maneater and Control.

If you're like me and have download caps, it could potentially screw you over.

The only thing turning me off from it at this point (aside from the price) is that apparently the runs are REALLY long, and there are zero checkpoints or save points at all.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're meaning by "resume feature", but this is something they've talked about at length in the reviews.

You can't really do that. The closest you can get is putting the PS5 in rest mode. But the PS5's rest mode is notoriously buggy.

So, you can leave the game, but you cannot do anything else on your PS5 (except visit the PS Store) without closing the game.

I never quit games on my PS4. Rest mode works beautifully. Therefore no need for saving in a roguelike. If PS5 rest mode/suspend/resume whatever you want to call it is currently buggy, I trust Sony will fix it. The only reason I ever quit a game is to play another game. Media apps work while a game is suspended, at least on the PS4.

So what you're saying may be true on the PS5, but it's not true on the PS4, indicating it will eventually be "fixed" on the PS5.

I think I'm hooked on Hitman.

Took a few missions to get on its pacing but now I'm loving it. Had to learn the importance of patience, getting a very neutral outfit that will get you into most places unnoticed and allow you to explore as much as possible.

Love the bits of environmental story telling, and listening to peoples' conversations and using the information.

Whole presentation is incredible. Looks and sounds amazing. I imagine they have increased the visuals on PS5 because the game play looks better than the cinematics*.

Still loving trying to kill the targets in the weirdest/funniest ways possible.

It can also be fun to pull a GTA and see if I can get myself in huge trouble then get out of it and still complete the mission.

Really fun.

Honestly it seems like Series X is really the better of the two consoles.

I chose PS5 because it had something to play at launch. But I will definitely be getting a Series X at some point point thr road, and I expect it will get a lot more play time.

Speaking of rising blood pressure levels, a few days ago I finally completed Doom Eternal. Totally ace game, the sense of control, especially when airborne, was extremely liberating and exhilarating.
I was dead set on playing the game on the highest difficulty level and got a good way towards the end when I finally had to dial it down a single notch. It probably outstayed its welcome by a wee bit. By the end it was just sheer pandemonium if not always inspiration. But yeah, felt pretty exhausted and agitated after most sessions, a fact no doubt compounded by me totally losing my cool and hurling expletives at the old Oled tv.

Started up Ghost Recon: Wildlands now. The concept appeals to me, a more measured, tactical shooter (which I need after Doom Eternal) although I already encountered one game breaking bug 1 hour into it.

I'm legit torn bc I love every melee style.

Stealth/archer/assassin with illusion and resto thrown in ---> nothing funnier than casting Fury into the middle of a bandit crowd and watching them kill each other, while I either ohk backstab the stragglers or pick them off at a distance with the bow.

The dw chainsaw is good but I haven't gotten the dw perks yet. I like that it's super aggressive but otoh it also feels like I'm flailing around like a madman most of the time.

Favorite might be 2h or a shield, just because I love bashing mobs in the face and watching them stagger while I wind up the killing blow.

I remember absolutely loving the first half and then it just got kinda dumb with the mutations. It was way scarier when it was just that hillbilly family.

The GiantBomb guys have been saying it's much campier and less serious than RE7, and that it's better for it.

I'm seriously loving RE2. The RE engine is GORGEOUS. The lighting, the rain effects, it all looks freaking amazing.

Had a fair bit of driving to do today so I queued up some gaming podcasts (GiantBomb and GiantBeast).

In one of them one of the older GB members named Dan was talking about some stuff that just...made me face palm at such a high level. And he insists that he is not trolling, he was sincere in these thoughts and was ADAMENT about them. Here are a few highlights...

- cooked meat becomes raw again when put in the fridge. It needs to be fully recooked, not just reheated.

Beat RE2! Fantastic game with some annoying difficulty spikes. Will absolutely 100% be replaying this multiple times, so keeping it installed.

Started Returnal tonight. Wow.

Audio visual is insanely good. And the controller stuff with the DualSense is amazing. You can feel water drops hitting you as you run in the rain. And the adaptive triggers and how they work with aiming and alt fire...super cool.

The game feels about as close to a Prometheus video game as you could get.

Elden Ring trailer is a nice cinematic, but what's the gameplay? A couple times in there, it sure looked like Dark Souls with an updated skin.

Also, Elden Ring and Elder Scrolls sounds almost guaranteed to be a trademark dispute.

Nah, Just the really jenky glitches are on console.

All the falling through the map stuff was on PC but there's some weird things going on in that game that I never saw playing on PC.

I'm a couple gens behind, but I've never had console issues outside of xbox. PC has been nonstop issues since '93.

Makes sense they would coordinate this with the sequels release. It's made by Ubisoft/Massive (same devs as Division), so it's definitely something I would check out.

I think Massive working on this (and they also have a Star Wars game in the works) is taking away time to support the Division. Which is a huge loss for Division lovers like myself.

I just don't find the world of Avatar interesting at all. Every aspect of it has been done better. The only standout was the 3D tech when viewing in theaters. Not having that, it's beyond generic.

If it is a typical Ubisoft game, then there's nothing there for me.

Yeh that's fair. The Sequels really need to do something new to get people interested in that world again. It might be the underwater aspect we are hearing about. It would be cool to explore land, under water and space all in 1 game.

Looked like a carbon copy of Dead By Dawn to me. Which is fine, but not shocking.
