Playing X-Com 2: War of the Chosen now and it added most everything I wanted in the base game: new spins on old missions, viable melee options, variable squad sizes, sub-missions offering experience and resources, etc etc.

There's a sci-fantasy plot, severely dumb RPG systems, and f'ing zombies, none of which X-Com needs, but otoh I get to control a character voiced by Commander Worf from Star Trek, so that's a win.

Troopers will grenade your ass on the first level on harder settings.

You gave me fair warning and sure enough ... very first mission ... kaboom!

One of my biggest problems with XCOM 2 was the incredibly inconsistent art design, especially with the aliens and their tech.

Each enemy type looks like it was designed by a different person who had no communication with any of the other artists regarding consistency of style or tone.

We go from grays and creepy humanoid insects to...a flying golden angel, and a giant cobra?

Yeah, the skirmisher is excellent. I use the reaper whenever I can as my forward scout. Sneak in as close as possible, then bring everyone up. The skirmisher easily replaces one of my rangers.

Agreed, and it's weird / funny / sad because they must've been aware of it, hence the half assed explanations about alien appearance --- Bradford noting that the chryssalids are smaller than they used to be; the silly lore about the aliens all being from separate worlds, etc.

Yeah, the skirmisher is excellent. I use the reaper whenever I can as my forward scout. Sneak in as close as possible, then bring everyone up. The skirmisher easily replaces one of my rangers.

This might be my single beef about the game --- that they fucked up the class design in the base game (lol Heavies with no rockets and over 100 aim with mods), and sorta made it worse in the expansion. Stealth made Rangers actually useful on timed missions, but why take one when you can have a Reaper or a Skirmisher?

Otoh, that first tunnel mission was pretty fucking fun so I'm not sure how much I care.

I wrote about loving Hades a while back when it was still in early access. Incredible game, so many little details and so much complexity that opens up at just the right speed. Lots of fun combinations to try, lots of ways to make the game incrementally more difficult. Having said that, once I unlocked and blooded up all four aspects of all six weapons, my desire to keep doing runs fell off. All that was left after that, it seemed, was furthering narrative stuff with the npcs, which...fine sure, but I liked the unlocking part. Gave me something to be hungry for. Still, it's incredible overall. I may go back to it now that's it's proper released.

IMO, the best aspect out of them all is Hera's bow. You have to enjoy Cast builds tho, for obvious reasons. But oh man SO much fun when you get a good Hera run. I also love Guan-Yu's spear.

Super Mario 3D All Stars is pretty neat, but also shows how poorly 64 has aged. The camera issues make it almost unplayable by today's standards.

Thinking back, when was the last time a console gen launch went well?

This one seems particularly messy and badly handled.

But has there ever been a console launch that went smoothly? Everything happened on the dates when they were supposed to, there were plenty of consoles available, decent launch titles (I know this one is more subjective), online services ran smoothly if applicable, etc.

Going back to PS3 is impossible for me. It takes forever to start a game. And the graphics don't seem that bad in your memory until you realize you're used to God of War and Horizon. But yeah, it wasn't a quantum leap like PS2 to PS3 because you can only switch to HD once.

I wonder if the next leap will feel bigger due to the 4k of it all.

Resident Evil VII does really kinda degenerate into sub-par monster encounters replete with at least one huge boss encounter that is neither challenging nor interesting. The monstrosity of course has these big orange eyeballs in the most improbable of locations that have to be targeted. I'm a bit surprised that towards the latter half the game is making an effort to fully tie this into the Resident Evil universe with a big old derelict oil tanker that is stuck in a bayou. and from where the evil emanated, and which explains the reason why the Baker family got infected.

I kinda wish they were simply a depraved bunch. I figured with the reviews that this game was a bold new direction for the franchise. I guess I assumed it would stand on its own narratively.

Although this does explain some of the critters lurking in the mansion itself, so I guess a bit torn here.

Still a pretty scary game.

Squad: At least one Ranger. Specialist with a good hacking score. Pending on environment, heavy or sniper. Snipers in the underground expansion missions are touch and go. However, a sniper in Spider armor, or the Archon Knight Armour is BAD. ASS.

If I had to take a squad of one class, it would be Rangers. Blade master, run and gun, BladeStorm, Untouchable, and Reaper.

I never put Shadowstep on a Ranger. After playing with the Reapers in the expansion, I may have to change that.

Finished my Commander run. This was very good advice. Blademaster Templar + Blademaster Ranger on a late game ambush mission was just ridiculous. Pure L-O-L fun.

Also got a sniper with ~130 aim, shredder, and holo-targeting, which was also OP.

Eager to try Legendary next, or maybe an Commander ironman run.

Blade master Reaper: Oh, it’s my turn. I’m gonna kill you, ok now you, and now you, and now you and, oh wait, don’t think I can kill you with my blade. Let me introduce you to my storm gun.

LOL. I had a lot of good fights but I think my favorite mission was one with a sitrep that limited you to a squad of 3. I chose a Blademaster, Specialist Medic (carrying the Warlord's assault rifle) and a Psi Op. Was really nervous about it, thinking it'd be hard, wondering if I chose the right classes.

First turn: Pull 2 pods by accident. Blademaster kills 3 mobs without breaking a sweat, thanks to Inspire and Teamwork. Psi guy mind controls an advent officer, who becomes immediately everyone's favorite target. I don't remember what I had the Specialist do, except the remaining enemies were dead on turn #2 and nobody on my side got shot.

That was my first real hint that Reaper/Bladestorm/Implacable/Untouchable miiiiiiiiight be a little OP.

Completed Resident Evil VII. Been playing for 20 hours which is not what is advertised online. I guess I took it real slow. :)

Really weird how I was bursting at the seams with ammo and weapons at the end, except I didn't need them. That seems to contradict the notion of a survival horror game.

Shades of Aliens towards the end, terrible final boss fight, but I was relieved. Not because the game didn't deliver for me on the whole, but because I get to start something new.

It's getting things off your chest time. It's bullshit that even with a new console area dawning upon us, we are still given the option to choose between 60 fps (but without ray-tracing and native 4K) or ray-tracing enabled as well as native 4K, but only at 30 fps. Spiderman: Miles Morales is one offender, others will surely follow.

Sure, being given options is nice I suppose, and it's not a dealbreaker, but still. When will this duality end? Maybe during the middle or towards the end of this console lifecycle.

I never played Witcher 3, but Cyberpunk's world seems denser, more immediately inviting and appealing as well. At least to me.

I see more opportunities for alleyways, backdoors, climbing, jumping on top of things etc.. than in a game with a medieval setting that's bound to look more desolate.

I mean, anytime I stumbled across a secret in Red Dead Redemption 2, I felt that it was basically a cave somewhere. A generalization perhaps, but Cyberpunk's world may have more visual triggers to pique one's interest. In theory.

Exactly. And Fallout, while sci-fi, was also desolate and ruins. Ghost of Tsushima wasn't really anything close to Fallout/RDR levels to even be in the discussion.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic is pretty good I suppose, and probably comparable, although you could only go into so many buildings.

Irish
10-22-2020, 02:38 AM
There have been some good sci-fi games with decent amounts of exploration. Star Trek: Elite Force, Deux Ex, Halo, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars: The Old Republic (the failed MMO), Mass Effect, Destiny, Apex Legends, Nier Automata...

The only RPG I've played where you could literally walk, run, climb, and jump around every single object in the world was Breath of the Wild. You saw a mountain or a tower or a fortress on the horizon, you could eventually find a way to get there and check it out.

In Witcher 3, while in combat, Geralt couldn't jump over a half meter tall fence. He couldn't swing a sword and leap over a stool or a table. They had huge, bustling cities, which were def a highlight of the game, but you could only go into certain buildings during quest events. He couldn't spontaneously climb anything, either ,and ladder physics were a little dodgy.

CDPR uses the same in-house engine for all their games. I assume they made improvements over the last 5 years, but it feels like you guys are expecting way more than any RPG could deliver. Most of these games are about breadth with the illusion of depth: wipe open terrain, lotsa objects on the screen, fully voiced NPCS, etc. But at the end of the day you're looting crates over and over for crafting mats and vendor trash, navigating the same dialogue trees multiple times, and checking boxes on a skill tree.

ETA: I'm still curious about how it will play (and especially how much Keanu-time players actually get), but I'm sorta expecting Cyberpunk to look incredible while being mostly similar to every other RPG out there, because that's how Witcher 3 was.

Mass Effect, thank you. Similar to Knights of the Old Republic, but truly felt like a game that was "role-playing game." Tons of different directions, not where you pick a certain choice, only for it to really end up how the game wanted it to be. Loved that. I never played 4, or whatever it's called after 3.

And yeah, I got maybe a hour into Witcher 3 and hated the controls and similar issues that I just couldn't get into it.

I've been trying to get Knights of the Old Republic to work on my PC for a couple of months now. It's totally broken in today's standards the biggest problem being hte dated controls.

But I'm trying to get the Ultra Widescreen option to work better.

I seriously burned out on Witcher 3 because I did ALL the side quests.

Basically, these are the only games I like playing anymore. I can just muck around and do random stuff for a while and then bail whenever. Breath of the Wild was pretty much the only reason I got a Switch. (Though my wife and I like playing Overcooked together). I need to upgrade my computer and get RDR1&2

Curious if you're playing with "Lost and Abandoned" turned off? Or with any of the second wave options? I kinda loathe L&A because it takes forever and it's pretty easy to cheese once you've played it. OTOH, immediately getting 2 hero classes and a specific Chosen enemy also makes the first 1-2 months much, much easier.

Pro-tip on DD: Don't read anything about the boss fights before you do them. The encounters are much more fun when you go into them blind.

Algernon Wasp. He's the flower guy who makes hats. :)

Anyway, yup...it was ALL the things. The full compendium is what I'm most proud of. It's not necessary for the 100%, though it does put me closer to Platinum if that's a thing I do (I ain't decided yet; a friend loaned me her Wii and I'm going to play BotW next). Most things you only need a portion. But it didn't feel like a proper 100% unless I had everything.

And not just discovered - I got full bars for the entire compendium. If to get a full bar for a horse you needed to study, break and bond with multiple coats of that breed, I did that, even if it meant I went to a stable, bought a horse with an uncommon coat, rode it for 3 seconds, and then immediately sold it back. If you had to catch a northern pike with a river lure and not just any old bait, I did that too. And so on. In fact, I could've completed the 100% weeks ago, but I reserved my final activity that I knew would push me over the official 100% until I'd studied/killed/collected every animal and bird, got every trinket and weapon, crafted every single item from the Trapper, etc.

Been chipping away at this for 9 months. I checked my time in game on Rockstar Social Club, and I'm not sure I want to report out that number here.

It's probably the most insane thing I've ever done. But it was also the most satisfying gaming experience I've ever had.

This looks like it's gonna be craploads of fun.

Some more thoughts. Still having a lot of fun. It's a bit glitchy at times, but no dealbreaker. Combat remains a good challenge, there are lots of save spots and some portions recall bits from the Mario games with elaborate rotating constructions that can be manipulated with force powers so that the jumps can be timed just right.

Parrying is a challenge when you're surrounded by multiple stormtroopers.

Re-downloaded Sekiro. I made it pretty dang far a while back, but the game felt longer than expected and I eventually fell off before beating it. But the game kept calling to me. Anyway, this time I'm doing it right, as if I'm going to get the platinum. Every boss, mini-boss, important item, etc. And I think I can say things are going very well so far. Most bosses go down in one or two tries, and I'm having a fantastic time exploring (this playthrough has cemented the level design and world-building of Sekiro to be on par with Bloodborne and the first Dark Souls). Biggest hurdle so far was definitely Genichiro, though the Ashina Elite mini-boss just before him gave me a lot of trouble as well. Closing in now on Guardian Ape and Corrupted Monk, which is about as far as I got the first time. I'll soon see how this game scales into late game--I hear it's stupid hard, but my resolve is high at the moment.

Has Jedi Fallen Order's exciting and challenging combat been the trigger? Or was I always destined to give it another chance? Or maybe I've just become a better player in past years? When I defeated all Valkyries in God of War I felt like a million bucks. Or perhaps Demon's Souls stunning-looking remake on PS5 prompted a re-appraisal even though I'm not planning to get a PS5 yet?

But the fact is that yesterday I began playing Bloodbourne again after giving it a few feeble attempts back when it came out. I remember those initial levels. I was mortified of dying, but especially of losing all my hard-won blood echoes. I didn't get that concept. I admired the game back then, but it didn't seem my idea of a good challenge.

I seem to be doing much better now even though I'm still way in the early stages of the game. But it is supremely thrilling and hacking away is just colossally satisfying. The atmosphere is so thick you can cut it with a knife although there is some stutter and it gets jittery sometimes when making a quick turn. Which is fair enough, game is 5 years old, but looks great all the same.

Still not sure what happens when I lose all blood echoes and fail to reclaim them. I understand blood echoes are the game's currency, but not like experience points. So I wouldn't be able to buy anything, but I wouldn't suddenly lose all my xp points. So I suppose best would be to immediately spend them on something, anything as soon as I have the chance right?

EDIT: not done jet with Jedi. I'm close to getting my 8th stim canister which Means I'd be maxed out on that front. Then it's probably on to the final stretch.

Not at all. I love talking about video games.

Though I do find it odd, the Playstation site doesn't allow you to do this easily.

1. Mass Effect Andromeda
2. The Walking Dead
3. Terminator Salvation
4. Uncharted 3
5. Uncharted 2
6. Uncharted
7. Alone in the Dark
8. Destiny
9. Assassin's Creed II
10. Batman: Arkham City
11. God of War III
12. Infamous
13. Prince of Persia
14. Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection
15. Call of Duty: World at War
16. Burnout Paradise
17. Dead Space

That's impressive. Especially CoD: World at War and Destiny, which I imagine both had a LOT of online stuff.

Mine are:

Wolfenstein: The New Order
Lord of the Rings: Shadow of Mordor
Spider-Man PS4
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

I also got all the trophies in a few downloadable games, but they didn't have platinums. Like SOMA.

I am 1 trophy away on Dark Souls 2, and maybe 2 or 3 on Bloodborne.

Actually there weren't any multiplayer stuff in World at War, but beating it on the hardest difficulty was extremely hard because all they did was turn up the damage that enemies did to you. Awful game. It was the last COD I played all the way through and I basically only played it because I was big into 24 at the time and enjoyed kiefer sutherland.

Destiny was by far the hardest Platinum I've done; beating the RAID on hard with a bunch of randoms. I threw that game out the window once that was done.

I dont know how any of the follow up RAIDs worked, but the fact that you literally had a maze in the middle of the RAID, where Bungy basically just said "figure it out" was kind of neat. Finding someone that new how to go through the maze in your group (and avoiding those sentry things that killed you instantly) was rare.

The second one started out really cool, where you had to navigate a similar maze in complete darkness if I remember right.

Meg I take it the tough baddie you were talking about was Trilla, Cere's sister right? She's tough and fast, parrying is nigh on impossible, so I'm trying to strike during those special moves of hers when she's posing for a brief second. Died about 15 times, but before I called it a night, I was able to reduce her health at the midway point twice so that tells me something. :) It's also at this point that she starts introducing some new stuff like homing in on you and, well, sucking your soul out of you. It was an insta-kill twice. I refuse to dial down the difficulty.

Meg, I fucking did it! :) Beat Trilla, that's on Jedi Grandmaster. Gave myself a few days off after I couldn't beat her the first 20 rounds. Just let things sink in. :) Although I had already learned a few things, like only strike when she's well and truly done with her combo. At which point I ususally unleashed my special move whereby Cal would split his double bladed light sabre into 2 and strike hard. Takes off a big chunk of her energy. Maybe slow her down first if I was too far away. I just looked online for minor guidance and the only thing I took away from that was what I already knew, strike when she's done with her combo, then I closed the webpage for fear of learning too much. The 9 stims were still kinda utterly necessary to have.

Took me like 5 tries today, and kinda amazed how smoothly it went down, without aggravation, without sweaty hands. I just dealt with her.

Big surprise too at the end, was kinda glad it wasn't another drawn out boss fight.

Back to Bloodborne now. And perhaps start a new game, thinking of Doom Eternal.

On to final boss now, then should be smooth sailing to platinum.

EDIT: It should be smooth sailing to the platinum, except I forgot to mention I have to back up my save to the PS4 cloud so I can get all the endings without having to play through the game FOUR times. I'm a little nervous about the backup, so if anyone has experience with this...

Sekiro update: Finished first playthrough. Final boss Isshin Sword Saint deserves his reputation of super high difficulty. I successfully backed up my save file to the PSN cloud, then got three out of the four endings (pretty cheesy, but otherwise I would've had to do four playthroughs).

I BLEW through ng+, and got the fourth ending. I can totally see why players better than I enjoy speedrunning this game. Now that I know the game/bosses better and am no longer in exploration or quest-seeking mode, I bet I could speed run a fresh ng in a handful of hours (which is how long it took me to get through the first area back in March '19). The world record is about 20 minutes.

Anyway, now I have to grind for exp to unlock all the skills and get the final trophy/platinum. Can't stand these dull late game farming routes. I think I'll play into ng++, but that means I have to beat the final boss again...

Had some trouble with this chap yesterday, but as hard as the game can be sometimes, and to be honest I overestimated that since it's quite doable so far, some enemies can be dispatched quite easily. I didn't do it like this dude but instead tried to fight him, got him near the ledge of the clock tower by accident and off he went. Although it means I wasn't able to claim any prize for it. Looked for it on ground level but saw nothing.

Here you go Meg. So 2 years before and 2 years after. Right in the gosh darn middle.

Cyberpunk 2077 entered pre-production with approximately fifty staff members when developer CD Projekt Red had finished The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Blood and Wine (2016). In March 2018, a new studio opened in Wrocław to aid the production. In July 2018, actor Keanu Reeves was approached for the role of Johnny Silverhand,[91] codenamed Mr Fusion to maintain secrecy.[92] He would lend his likeness to, voice, and do motion capture for the character.[93][94] Reeves' dialogue amount is second only to that of V.[95] Having first spent fifteen days recording his lines,[96] Reeves was later granted his request that Silverhand's screen presence be doubled. By August 2018, the story was fully realised and could facilitate a complete playthrough. Staff started working from home in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic,[80] causing a halt in localisation.. .In October 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 was released to manufacturing
