A simple new game.

I give you an actor. I post their picture.

You tell me which movie contains their best performance. You get one vote.

Discussion might happen. Or maybe not.

After a day or so, the votes are counted. I announce the winning performance.

We then move on to somebody else.

Previous decisions:
Robert De Niro - Raging Bull

I missed the last discussion, but I'll go with Little Children here.

Can't quite think of what the best scene is from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but I think this scene sets the whole character up quite perfectly. She rocks it in this movie.

I'm trying to decide between Heavenly Creatures and ESotSM. Both are multidimensional, layered and recursively interesting. Normally I'd go with the latter, but her breakout work needs some love as well in all its expressive and amoral glory, so HC.

While I loved The Reader and ESOTSM, I've gonna throw my vote to Heavenly Creatures.

I don't like her too much.

Tough choice. I think it's hard to top that startling, confident debut in Heavenly Creatures.

After that would you veer to ESotSM or shift to other work?

It should be noted that I hail her work in Sense and Sensibility almost equally to the other two, even if she's not quite the co-lead.

Heavenly Creatures and ESOTSM are her two best films, but I think in both there are many other elements that make me love them, Jackson's in particular. For me, she's on the best display, and most terrific, in Haynes' miniseries or even in Polanski's Carnage where she is the best of the bunch.

Why?

Its hard to explain, but I think her performance in Heavenly Creatures is more subtle and nuanced and natural than in the other two I mentioned. Those were good performances too, but HC required a certain touch to function, and I think she pulled it off.

Yeesh, you must really hate her. It's possibly her worst.

Kate, of course, has an arsenal of thoughtful, top-notch performances. I'm hoping someone will mention her bold and brazen-enough Holy Smoke performance (my runner up), but nothing can touch her perfectly balanced interpretation of an unbalanced character in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Oh my darling Clementine.

This game is fun--I hope it lasts.

Never really understood the gravitation towards that performance.

Jude, Holy Smoke, Hamlet and Little Children all get mentioned before I go to Eternal Sunshine.

How did I miss her Hamlet? Was that the Ethan Hawke one?

If I recall Revolutionary Road is pretty well disliked here.

Yeah, she is fantastic in Revolutionary Road.

I'm torn between Mildred Pierce and Eternal Sunshine. I think I'll go with Mildred Pierce.

I'll go with Eternal Sunshine although I feel less equipped to judge her than the others because she has quite a few films I haven't seen.

I think Revolutionary Road doesn't get mentioned much, because it was the 3rd or 4th time that she's played that character. She does it again in Labor Day.

Yeah, she was better playing the same archetype in Little Children anyway. Which was also not a very good film.

Never understood the hate of Little Children. Thoroughly funny and adept at skewering where it needed to and finding the snark and the black humor where something like American Beauty found only the quirky platitudes. I can see how it would be juvenile and irritating to some, but the level of hatred always seemed so bizarre.

Thinking about it, Winslet was pretty great there. I'll stick with my answer though.

Next new voter gets to decide: Is it Heavenly Creatures or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind?

Ideally, this would be someone who has seen both.

The one that pops into my head first is Romance & Cigarettes, probably because she elevated it considerably (though it's still an annoying movie).

Come to think of it, same goes for most of her films. Eternal Sunshine and Heavenly Creatures are probably the only of hers I really like.

EDIT: I need to see all of Mildred Pierce, clearly.
