So the idea of the New Wave has been bandied about since it was introduced (unless there's an antecedent that I'm unaware of) with the French New Wave. However, in the late-90s and 2000s alone, it's been co-opted to include the Korean New Wave, Romanian New Wave, and Thai New Wave.

Simply put, what are the one or two films from one/each of these countries that you see persisting in cinematic consciousness? Please feel free to elaborate as needed.

To lend some assistance:

French New Wave (needs no link)
British New Wave (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_New_Wave)
Japanese New Wave
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_New_Wave)Czech New Wave (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czechoslovak_New_Wave)
Cinema Novo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinema_Novo)
HK New Wave (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong_New_Wave)
Romanian New Wave
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanian_New_Wave)Australian New Wave (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_New_Wave)

If someone has a good links for the Thai New Wave, I couldn't find a good one. Also, a couple links don't really name any films.

Feel free to add your own links, guys. I wasn't necessarily being comprehensive, just thought I would lend assistance to the vagueness of the initial question for those not versed in all the "new waves."

Lav Diaz and Raya Martin. Lino Brocka and Kidlat Tahimik, if older.

But is this about new waves from 90s/00s, or from any time...I thought the title and your description indicated the former, but maybe not. Either way, the Taiwanese New Wave deserves a mention (even if it started in the 80s).

Thanks for the primer on these filmmakers, elixir.

Regarding the Inventory parameters, I'd say anything before the 80s is too early and will likely lead to many of the same films. I think focusing on the post-80 Waves is more interesting for discussion and discovering, so that please.

Maybe not a new wave per se, and perhaps questionable as a grouping, but Berlin School deserves a mention as well. Like, I know Germany already had a new wave of sorts, but this is another one!
!
Some filmmakers/films (four females!):
Schanelec: Places in Cities, Marseille
Speth: The Days Between, Madonnen
Petzold: Wolfsburg, Gespenster
Arslan: A Fine Day
Ade: The Forest for the Trees, Everyone Else
Grisebach: Be My Star
Gröning: L'amour, l'argent, l'amour
Kohler: Bungalow, Windows on Monday

The Days Between, Marseille, and Everyone Else are my personal favorites.

Edited to add: I'll find some links in a second, but these are "contemplative" films that often focus on more "mundane" scenarios. // http://sensesofcinema.com/2010/feature-articles/the-berlin-school-%E2%80%93-a-collage-2/
