The first half is a lot of fun, and feels like it's building to something great, but alas, the producer and director are tired characterizations whose scenes play increasingly like padding, and the inevitable descent into WTF sorta fell flat for me, managing to be both tediously nebulous and too obvious with its diegetic trickery, the brilliantly disconcerting shift into a British nature doc notwithstanding. In short, this doesn't really work, but I love the milieu, the tactile cinematography and canny editing, and especially Strickland's ambition, enough so that I really want to give it another look someday to see if the second half improves for me. In all honesty, I would have been perfectly content watching ninety minutes of Massimo and Massimo producing grotesque foley effects intercut with the increasingly absurd vocal recordings. Also:

"Reel 2, scene 37, take 1. The dangerously aroused Goblin prowls the dormitory and tries in vain to molest Teresa, who makes a swift retreat."

Rowland said the stuff I wanted to say, so I'll just sit here and finish this post.
