Post your list. I usually check out what people post in these threads.

Laura Marling now. She reminds me of Joni Mitchell, which is a good thing.

Classixx sounds like some Discovery-worship that's actually pretty decent, at least based on Holding On. Hadn't heard of your #1, but it reminded me that the new Ghostface is his strongest in years.

So the year is half over and I need more recs. Anyone else want to list what's rocking their cloud or other music player? Rudresh Mahanthappa's Gamak will likely be the best new jazz album I listen to this year. Technical, experimental, and a joy all at the same time.

idiotecque stalker i like your style

what does the sean mccann and arca sound like?

Idioteque Stalker
09-01-2013, 08:29 PM
They're the two most "experimental" things on my list.

McCann's album is suite for strings, percussion, voice and found sounds, but it has a messy quality that makes it gorgeous to me, like I'm not sure if it was improvised or meticulously composed. There are Reich influences and a lot of modern tonalities, but in the end a lot of it reminds me of the the cuts on Eno's Discreet Music where he fucks with Pachelbel's Cannon beyond all recognition.

Arca has a really new-sounding mix of dub and hip-hop. The &&&&& mixtape is all compressed (stay away D Davis). The sounds he works with, and the way he puts them together, is pretty unique but not always easy on the ears. Pretty wonky, sometimes kinda creepy. You'd just have to hear it. It's available to listen to and download for free on soundcloud last I checked. He also produced this song:

Some changes:

I pretty much stopped listening to most hip-hop especially stuff celebrating derogatory views on women, gays, etc and other macho bullshit so since I haven't listened to the two hip-hop albums on my list since then I'm taking them off.

1. Icona Pop - This Is...Icona Pop
2. Major Lazer - Free the Universe
3. Chvrches - The Bones of What You Believe
4. Tegan and Sara - Heartthrob
5. Classixx - Hanging Gardens
6. Capital Cities - In a Tidal Wave of Mystery
7. Disasterpeace - FZ: Side F / FZ: Side Z
8. Knife Party - Haunted House EP
9. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Mosquito
10. Daft Punk - Random Access Memories

November update:

1. My Bloody Valentine - m.b.v
2. Laura Marling - Once I Was an Eagle
3. Deafheaven - Sunbather
4. Shane Carruth - Upstream Color Soundtrack
5. Dirty Beaches - Drifters/Love is the Devil
6. Jon Hopkins - Immunity
7. SubRosa - More Constant than the Gods
8. Fuck Buttons - Slow Focus
9. Yamantaka // Sonic Titan - UZU
10. Rudresh Mahanthappa - Gamak

We'll see if Arcade Fire or Haken can move onto the list with more listening. Not sure if the Harold Budd release counts since it's technically older material.

Gotta check out the Stargazer Lilies. Should blow the mbv right off the list. ;)

I need to check out that Jon Hopkins release. Also, been meaning to check out that Gamak album since you first mentioned it.

SL's "Sad Colored Tears" is reminiscent of A Sunny Day in Glasgow. That's a good thing. Digging it so far; back half is stunning.

I would recommend the SubRosa album beyond the two you mention interest in. Hearing multiple violins mixed with sludgy doom and clean vocals makes for interesting listens.

My taste tends to skew more mainstream than most here. In no particular order...

Local Natives - Hummingbird
Capital Cities - In a Tidal Wave of Mystery
The Neighbourhood - I Love You
Phantogram - Phantogram EP
The Civil Wars - The Civil Wars
Phoenix - Bankrupt!
Queens of the Stone Age - ...Like Clockwork
Little Tybee - For Distant Viewing
James Blake - Overgrown
Atlas Genius - When It Was Now

And two 2012 albums I discovered this year and played the shit out of:

Electric Guest - Mondo
Milo Greene - Milo Greene

It probably won't be til January unfortunately since I'll be in Europe for 3 weeks starting Sunday. I'm basically caught up with this years albums (though now with your additions, I have two), might be able to get a jump on it during the plane rides.

Thanks Boner. I was worried I was finished for the year and then you post a top 10 with 7 albums I haven't heard. :/

Love seeing Danny Brown at the top. He's better than Kanye, Jay-z and Death Grips combined. 'Handstand' may be the funniest thing released all year. The other 2 I've heard are also in my top 20.

3. Tim Hecker - Virgins

Check out the newest Gaston Arevalo (http://www.amazon.com/Rollin-Ballads-Gast%C3%B3n-Ar%C3%A9valo/dp/B00EPJ6COU/ref=tmm_other_meta_binding_tit le_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1386962688&sr=8-1) if you like Hecker. While somewhat similar, I greatly prefer Arevalo because he embraces more of the sonic spectrum by including more low and mid-range frequencies in his drones and soundscapes (to my ears, Hecker's music exists far too much in the high-range, and causes my ears to fatigue quickly). His newest is not my favorite, but it is by far his noisiest ambient outing so you might dig it a bit more than I do.

I like him a lot, and I liked Old, but it doesn't have the same replay value as XXX, in my opinion.

I think out of the new batch Kendrick is still holding onto the title belt.

Edit: I'd also take Pusha T over him, at the moment.

Best new album of the year:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcY5czIND-A

Also happens to be the new standard by which all modern minimal music will be judged.

http://www.npr.org/2013/08/03/208308232/from-a-jazz-trio-a-hypnotic-work-that-hardly-sounds-like-jazz

I chose this one over the Neko Case because I think it pushes the boundaries of music more. The Case album is a super strong and emotional album, full of amazing songs. But I usually want something a little more than just amazing songs. Often I look for things that inspire my own creativity, and this Dawn of MIDI album inspires me more than the Case album. If I was a singer/songwriter, I'm sure it'd be just the opposite.

I'm very particular with my Childish songs I like, cause there's a lot I don't like. But I don't think there was a song on that one I didn't like. I'll have to listen to it again and probably will sometime in the next week. But yeah, it's good. Camp level.
