I loathe Rebecca from Ivanhoe. Walter Scott was addressing anti-semitism.
But, there's no greater prejudice than idealisation. When only perfection's tolerable.

And I got sick of Miss most beautiful, most intelligent, most compassionate, more courageous ....

i guess, from the way the characters are portrayed his twin and "the widow" are supposed to be the antagonists. i just want to give rushdie credit for successfully depicting these two characters.
