This movie is so decent, it's painful. There are occasional moments that suggest the filmmakers are incredibly talented and could knock something out of the park, only to revert back into being a paint-by-numbers coming of age story. It's an exceptionally authentic movie at one point and ridden with cliches the next. At the very least, the age-appropriate casting works and it flirts with ambition, so I can't be too dismissive.

This movie and Mud have nearly identical third acts. It's kind of bizarre.

I'm just glad there's a coming-of-age movie willing to tackle the real issue we all struggled with in our youth - how exactly should I jump into this lake?

I loved the hell out of this. It's very well-written, well-acted (Nick Offerman stood out the most for me...now to FINALLY check out Parks and Rec), has an awesome soundtrack, and it's as effective with its dramatic moments as it is with its comedic moments. Might be my new favorite movie of the year.

Wow, I hadn't realized that, but it's true.

Anyway, this is a good film. I hate modern "quirky" comedy or what passes for it, but this one is genuinely funny, mostly due to the cast. It's nothing extraordinary, but it's a honest dramedy.
