Certainly a movie with a flawed concept, and silly decisions by just about everyone involved, but DeMonaco does direct this with a thrilling skill. The home invasion tactic DOES work, with several moments of absolute silence that work. number8 is completely right that the ramifications of a Purge are way more interesting then The Purge itself. A sequel is in progress, but I doubt it would focus on that.

Mixed. The Strangers was more effective, and was able to pull it off without the premise, but when it works, I dug it a lot.

A few questions:

-Why doesn't anyone have dogs? Seems like they'd be essential in this world.

-Despite the glasses, there really isn't much advancement in technology. Slightly disappointing there.

-Why the masks? The main villain takes it off without any worry, and shoots a friend without any conflict from his other friends. Forced shock there in my opinion.

Some of the best potential scenes in the movie were either cropped out or not shown at all. When the daughter goes to the "secret spot..." That could've been a great Hitchcock moment, but instead was completely glanced over.

I couldn't help but to think that Roger Ebert would have HATED this if he got to have the displeasure of seeing it.

I suppose I liked the ending, if only because it was really funny.

What's supposed to beat it? The Internship?

I guess? Just odd that some random horror film I learned existed two days ago is the #1 film in what is supposed to be peak season for the remake/franchise/sequel du jour.

but none of those opened this weekend and they've been running trailers for this for weeks and horror always does well cuz dumb people can understand it

interesting concept, but they do virtually nothing with it. the hotness of the youngest daughter kept me mildly interested.

also, love how the bum black dude just inexplicably goes missing, and it's supposed to surprise us when he saves the day.

I clicked on the spoiler thinking you were posting a picture of the hot daughter.

The more important question is why in god's name did you watch it?

Good question. Wish I had a good answer.

Didn't think this was too bad. Silly concept of course but it's a "what if" movie. Reminded me of the Strangers and that other Masked killing movie that came out this year. What was that other one called? Where they attack the random home? Anyway it's worth a watch for the concept. The ending is a let down.

You're Next, which is so much better than this pile.

I really want this one to come to BluRay. I missed it in theatres (it played for one weekend here).

Big yay. Surprised how much I enjoyed this.

It's got some stupid, obvious flaws & the ending pulls its punches but it worked for me as a horror film.

Also: The first act climax took me completely by surprise. Great stuff, perfectly timed.

Thought I'd give this a look, since the sequel will be out soon and this had its share of fans.

This movie sucks pretty hard. It's very stupid, ineptly directed, and predictable to an almost entertaining degree.

But better than You're Next.

I liked The Purge, but I gotta disagree -- You're Next had a better premise, better execution, and was narratively coherent. The Purge is way too sloppy at the edges, no matter what else it offers.

The acting in You're Next took my interest away entirely. From the dinner scene right down to the ending.
Example:

"Where's Felix?
"I stuck a blender in his head and killed him"
"Oh...ok"

"I can't believe you were apart of this"
"Come on babe. You do know how broke we are right?"

Very bad.

Yeah, I didn't even finish You're Next for that reason.

A brilliant concept constrained by idiotic character decisions and a failure to explore the many fascinating points of this central concept. The archvillain is so id that it undercuts the terror that this invasion should provoke, and the daughter too often chooses to hide from her family in whats that run counter to all logic.

Still, I like Hawke and Headey's commitment to this film.

I watched this again last night and I still say it's better than the Strangers and You're Next.
