Took longer than I wanted to get to this, but it was magnificent. The aesthetic and structure echo Badlands, but this one is even more bitter. The opening image works wonderfully as a juxtaposition to the rest of the film's smothering fatalism, and it's one neo-noir film that earns every bit of its ambiguity. Great sense of moral confusion and waywardness, and the motifs (mermaids, water as escape, water as surrender) connect to the core of the film. And the way in which the film explores domestication is interestingly perverted when sexual violence (even if mildly provoted) is the only endgame.

Wonderful stuff by Seimetz. I look forward to future work with her behind the camera. It's a startling debut feature film, and that closing line is killer.
