So Amazon has a $5 special price offering each month. This month I'm looking for feedback on four albums, so if you guys own them and can either note the suck or quality ratio, I'd be indebted so that I don't end up with silly purchases like Now, Now's Threads, an impulse purchase that looks dumber with each month.

David Bowie's Low (used to have Earthling)
Fiona Apple's Tidal (have her second and fourth albums)
Low's The Invisible Way (Swans connection intrigues me and they'll be at the Pitchfork festival)
Metz's Metz (also at the festival)

Amazing. Some of the best music Bowie and Eno ever made, together or solo. A forward-thinking masterpiece that still sounds like its from the future.

Tidal has some good songs on it, but ultimately I feel it's Fiona's weakest (probably because its her most corporate) album.

And get Low, for all the reasons Davis said.

Yeah, can't go wrong with Low.

Basically, you could just buy everything Bowie did up until the late '80s, early '90s, and then buy Outside.

The Metz album feels like a slighter inferior version of The Lamps's most recent work. Both feel fully attuned to energetic workouts and the like. I think the Lamps come off as heavier and a bit more technical in the sounds they pull from the guitar, but suspect that Metz will be solid live.

All that to say, I grabbed the Metz and Bowie albums. Also picked up The Breeders' Last Splash and Throwing Muses's Real Ramona, two albums (not $5) that I'd been considering for awhile.

Still welcome thoughts on Low. Derek?

Low's first album is pretty good. That's all I've listened to though.

Yeah, Low's first album is great and Things We Lost in the Fire is nearly as good. Haven't been as big on their last two, but still decent.

I just saw METZ live on Tuesday and they were friggin' intense and a lot fun. Good enough that I kinda regret not putting their debut in my top 30 last year. I'm with you on the Lamps album obviously and it's a bit more dynamic that METZ's.

Augusts pickups:

Daft Punk - Homework
Major Lazer - Free the Universe
Pretty Lights - A Color Map of the Sun
Dragonette - Bodyparts

So far in September:

Statik Selektah - Extended Play
9th Wonder & Buckshot - The Solution
Fashawn Murs - This Generation

I like how they now switch out their choices twice a month. These $5 deals are the main way I find new artists to listen to. Really digging the Major Lazer and Dragonette albums.

Last month I picked up:

David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust
Jay Z's The Blueprint
and Daft Punk's Homework

This month is the first month where nothing really appeals to me. Certainly this month also has a lot of new stuff (Janelle Monae and Vienna Teng especially) that I'm interested in, though, so no real loss.
