Yes... THE Stanley Hotel from The Shining is doing its first film festival. Completely horror based.

May 2-5. Eli Roth is the "Visionary Award Recipient." It has a few US Premieres, one of which is the Eli Roth starrer Aftershock.

This festival concept sound brilliant. What a place to put a festival in. Can't wait to go.

I have only seen one of those, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, but it's a damn good film that still has never seen any distribution. I have raved about it in the horror thread before I think.

I'm jealous. I'm not a huge horror fan but looks like a bunch of cool stuff playing there.

This festival was a lot of fun. It generated the festival energy that I like, in which it seems like everyone in the vicinity is there to see movies, discuss movies, and attend panels. With it being genre focused and new, it was even more accessible to talk with anyone. For a film festival, this probably has the biggest social networking approach that I've seen. It wants people's instagrams, tweets, and facebook comments. It displays them. It used its own hashtag, #yeahitscreepy. Good idea there. Type in the hashtag, and it's everything about the festival.

It has a little bit of troubleshooting to do. Being that this is the first year, that's no surprise. For one, it simply will need higher attendance if it wants to continue. All the films I attended were 20-30% full. However, the main events (which I wasn't able to attend) were apparently sold out. The brunch was full. So it has the potential.
Their ticketing system online was difficult. It continued to upgrade as time went on, so they definitely have the aspiration to continue working on it.

I saw three movies while I was there, all very different from each other.

Berberian Sound Studio is quite Lynchian in its approach. It creates a fantastic atmosphere, and certainly sets up for a good giallo mystery, but takes a little too long to get things going, and ends on a pretty lame note. Toby Jones was wellcast though as the sound editor going mad, and the scenes of sound foleying get tougher to watch as it goes on.

Frankenstein's Army starts off very amateur. Poor acting, sets, and story that cannot be overlooked. It also has an unnecessary "discovered footage" approach to try and explain the low budget. It seems like it was something anyone could've shot in high school. After nearly a hour, it goes into Frankenstein's lair, and becomes quite the circus of robot creation. It's quite impressive at the amount of different creations they make, even if it's zany. The blood is gargantuan, and actually kind of fun to watch in the respect that you aren't sure what creation is going to come up next. It's too bad that it takes so long to get here.

Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - I've seen this before. But I got a live piano score with this, and it was displayed on the big screen. Ultimately, the live piano didn't really enhance the movie much for me as I had hoped. Perhaps it was the composer, but I would rather have seen something else.

Next year, I'd love to stay longer and attend the panels, and see more movies. It sounds like there will be one, so I'm excited.
