I've bumped my rating while thinking about it more.

I like what it's doing. The film seems gung-ho about René's efforts to win the campaign, but the results come with some interesting ramifications. I thought the ending seemed a little too obvious in its sudden ambiguity (but at WHAT COST?) but really that's the essential element, an element that I realize now undercuts the entire film, with e.g. the character of René's wife, or the guy in an earlier scene who tells everybody to get fucked when he watches the first commercial draft (also the funniest scene in the movie; what the fuck is a mime doing in the middle of my movie indeed). The film is neither a celebration nor a condemnation. It asks troubling questions, and admits it has no easy answers. It bubbles and grows in my mind.

I liked this less than Tony Manero and Post Mortem, but it's still pretty good.

The most interesting part of this film is that it exposes the fact that dictatorships obtain (and remain in) power because people don't give a fuck about other people's lives as long as their own situation is good. This is evident in that the Pinochet people accurately realize that their campaign must be based on the economic growth of the country. Well, that isn't all the gist of it, but for me is the stand-out of the story's message.

I have to see those other two films baby doll mentioned.
