This Match Cut poster's ballot has been fully released. Have a look at the meaningless of voting:
BEST ANIMATED FILM:
This was an embarrassingly weak year for animated films. Match Cut should be ashamed to have nominated Brave. It has to be one of the year's most disappointing films based on its potential. But ah well, at least it wasn't Frankenweenie. Arriety is posing here as the 'thinking man's' choice. But good lord, I'd rather sit through Cars 2 than be subjected to that pseudo-Miyazaki snoozefest again. Paranorman had its moments and Laika is definitely a studio I root for, but it was more well-intentioned than successfully entertaining. It's Such a Beautiful Day seems like it might have promise, but I prefer to wait for the 3D version. What I saw from this didn't seem finished somehow. That leaves me with a film that wasn't exactly a mind blower, but still one that I have no trouble supporting because of its thoughtfulness and excellent voice over performances.
Wreck-It Ralph
BEST DOCUMENTARY:
I didn't see a single one of these, but I take my voting responsibilities seriously, so I will do what I can. I can eliminate This is Not a Film right off the bat for its cutesy title. Clearly, you are a film. Stop messing around with me. I don't really believe that The Invisible War happened. Seeing is believing, guys. It's like when I tell my bank I made the 'The Invisible Money Transfer'. Trust me! It's there! How to Survive a Plague doesn't seem very topical since we haven't had the plague since the Middle Ages. I had Searching for Sugar Man described to me by my dad, so now I don't even feel like I need to see it and I probably won't. Never heard of The Imposter, but I'm pretty sure Queen of Versailles is on Netflix Instant. I'll vote for that and hope that I have access to the winner.
Queen of Versailles
BEST SONG:
This category is stupid. Everyone knows it's stupid. But this time I feel good about voting for the song that was an oasis in an otherwise intolerable and tedious experience. Thank you, Kylie!
"Who Were We" - Holy Motors
BEST SCORE:
I'm going to use the same logic to vote in this category. Scores are something I rarely remember. But I'm going to vote for the one that elevated an otherwise exhausting and forgettable experience.
Beasts of the Southern Wild (Dan Romer, Benh Zeitlin)
BEST MAKEUP:
I didn't see Cloud Atlas, but I remember being put off by Asian Hugo Weaving. That just doesn't seem right. Didn't see Prometheus either, but I did have the Netflix disc at my home for about a week before remembering it was a Ridley Scott film and I could probably save 2 hours of my life. I have no idea what Holy Motors is doing in this category aside from the fact that it's one film where we actually saw someone apply makeup. Les Miserables is mostly dirt, isn't it? Just strategically applied dirt? I assume the nomination for Lincoln is really just about the lead character, but it did also include some impressive sideburns work. Good enough.
Lincoln
BEST COSTUMES:
None of these really stand out to me. Again, I didn't see Cloud Atlas. Sorry. I'll vote for the one that best expressed character rather than effectively replicated realism.
Moonrise Kingdom
BEST ART DIRECTION:
Cloud Atlas again! Damn it, you are making me look bad. I nominated Lincoln in this category and now, for the life of me, I can't remember why. The Art Direction for Les Miserables is probably its weakest element not named Russell. Django Unchained is mostly just a really nice house, right? I could do that. Hey, here's a nice house I found. Which leaves me with ... oh, fuck it, I'm not voting for Wes Anderson twice.
Lincoln
BEST SOUND EFFECTS:
I have no idea what Haywire is. Haywire? That's a movie? That's gotta have Denzel Washington in it, right? Sounds like Denzel Washington is a divorced dad with a gun. And things just got a little out of control. I am always reluctant to vote for superhero movies in these categories. I don't know why. Maybe because you can just make up any sound you want for your magical fantasy device and how am I supposed to know if that sounds right? Sure, yeah. Sounds like an enchanted +2 Halberd of Giant Slaying to me. My favorite sound in Looper was the sound of Paul Dano in misery. Zero Dark Thirty was startling and immersing.

Holy god I can't breathe. I have to know who did that. Either admit it publicly or PM me. You must be repped. Are we getting the rest of the categories? Please?

Votes are still rolling in, but here's part two of a certain poster's picks
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS:
Two of these are films I did not see. Two of these are Joss Whedon films. One of these has a completely realistic TIGER ON A BOAT.
Life of Pi
BEST EDITING:
Ugh, this is the snobbiest fucking category. No matter what I pick, some asshole's going to call me out and call me stupid. "Uh, actually, that film has the most obvious editing, so I can see why the untrained eye might think it's actually good editing." Screw it, I'm just voting for the film I like most and calling it good.
Zero Dark Thirty
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY:
Anna Karenina belongs in here. What the hell? Did people not see it? Freaking uninformed voting. Ruins everything. Oh wait, I've only seen two of these. Shit.
Life of Pi (Claudio Miranda)
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
This is a case of men vs. boys. Kushner is without question on another level in terms of sophistication, intelligence and wit. Amazing screenplay. Oh crap, am I going to vote for Lincoln again? Guess I have to.
Lincoln (Tony Kushner)
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY:
I'm tempted to throw Looper a bone here, because I feel like it deserves something. Time travel movies are tough and I think Johnson takes us on an extraordinary journey. Django is contender, but it's also far from Tarantino's best work. Whedon is self-congratulatory enough. I don't need to give him anything else. Moonrise Kingdom has its moments but really goes off the rails at the end. I am a complete and utter idiot for not seeing The Master. I know it. So, so, so sorry, Paul Thomas. You're one of the best. But I feel comfortable voting for a remarkably well-crafted, intelligent script that had a high level of difficulty and even found some humor in a dark, dark situation.
Zero Dark Thirty (Mark Boal)
BEST ENSEMBLE:
Since you won't give me an opportunity to vote for Juno Temple directly, I'm going to have to vote for her indirectly in this category. This film could have been a disaster without the right cast.
Killer Joe
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
I love, love, love the nomination of Blunt here. Her plea to her son at the end of Looper was one of the year's highlights to me. Sally Field playing an emotional train wreck ... yeah, that's a stretch. I have to give it to what it unquestionably one of the year's standout performances. Hathaway not only excelled. She justified Hooper's sound experiment by leading the way and showing what a live-sung film musical could look like if you got the proper actors working on it.
Anne Hathaway, Les Miserables
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:
I'm a big fan of Hoffman and have a feeling I probably would have liked his performance best. But ... didn't get to see it. I also gave up on male stripper movies after The Full Monty. I can't imagine a topic that interest me less. DiCaprio and Jackson were just fine, but have produced much better work throughout their career. I'm voting for the performance that was unexpected and nuanced.
Jason Clarke, Zero Dark Thirty
BEST ACTRESS:
Nominations for children in acting categories drive me nuts. They aren't really making acting choices, as much as they are being captured in honest moments. If that's all you want from a film actor, then by all means, continue to nominate them for being themselves. Wallis is an engaging, sweet personality. But she is not an actor. She is not playing a character.
Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty
BEST ACTOR:
Only saw three of these. Joaquin Phoenix quit acting, so I quit voting for him in acting categories. Waltz is excellent, but truthfully, he is excellent in the same way that he is excellent in Inglourious Basterds. It's a great performance, but I like to reward an actor at their best. I am not voting for Lavant because I do not want to see Ezee E post another goddamn picture of him and his gamey eyeball. Gross. Day-Lewis is on another level. His Lincoln ignored past caricatures and redefined an historical figure with insight, honestly and clarity.
Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln
BEST DIRECTOR:
I could make a case for Ang Lee here. He took a kind-of dopey story and turned it into an event. The fantastical elements of the film were truly extraordinary and memorable. Tarantino and Anderson are two of the best, but have been better elsewhere. I didn't see Tabu, but I'm offended that anyone would have the nerve to remake Murnau. Seriously, guys? I'm voting for Bigelow because I'm sick of people giving her shit about the torture thing.
Kathryn Bigelow, Zero Dark Thirty
BEST PICTURE:
Two decent efforts from directors who typically take us to higher heights. Two masturbatory, self-referential, navel gazers. One film I will likely never see. And the one truly great film I saw last year.
Zero Dark Thirty

I suppose it depends on how you define remake. It is very similar thematically, narratively, structurally, and uses the title.Tabu uses Murnau's film as a historical reference point, not a source to be plundered; the differences between the two films, and between Murnau's era and the present, are far more important than the similarities. To call it a remake is simply inaccurate.

For our first award, please give a big welcome to the legendary Werner Herzog!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/Isaac3159/herzog_zps0bdc1fa0.jpg
Thank you for inviting me to your award ceremony. I am Werner Herzog. As you may know, when I was twenty-eight years old, I directed a film called Aguirre: The Wrath of God. I would like it now for you to compare your twenty-eighth year to mine and please commit suicide in shame. I will give you a few minutes.

Cloud Atlas
When we see the painting behind them and behold its artificiality, its falseness, we come to understand that the falseness we see is reflected back into the faces of the actors sitting in the room. Their lives are a fraud, a lie. Especially for the man who is not really Asian.
http://www.blackfilm.com/read/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Django-Unchained-31.jpg
Django Unchained
What drove this man to kill? Could we find the answer here, in this house? No mercy was given to him in this place, nor to his wife, nor to his mentor. To avenge them and to preserve his own existence, he would have to withhold mercy as well. I now believe, in that room where so many lives ended, that his own life ended also.
http://yuenling.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/elephant_in_greenwich.jpg
Les Misérables
There is an elephant in our room, it is always there, and no one speaks about it. Why do we ignore the elephant when we should be facing it head-on? The elephant is trapped in an arch, which symbolizes its failure to move and the failure of the French people to move forward. The elephant in the room is the death of the French people.
http://www.filmofilia.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Lincoln-Daniel-Day-Lewis1.jpg
Lincoln
The man spent so much of his life in small rooms, where the dark walls close around him. Although he tried to put on a strong face, on the inside he found the rooms stifling and confining. Although he found himself in a position of great power, he was a prisoner of these rooms. A prison of his own making. It was in a small room like this where the man would meet his end.

Moonrise Kingdom
They want to live their lives in perfect symmetry, but they can only accomplish that on the surface. They cannot bring order to this world, for in this world there is only chaos, hostility and madness. The symmetry of the outside is betrayed by the chaos on the inside. The symmetry is a fraud.

Welcome to the Best Documentary category, Match-Cut . I am space.
http://www.hydramag.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Nostalgia-for-the-Light.png
I embody learning. So do documentaries. They uniformly teach you important lesson. You learn, for example, that the U.S. military mismanages and silences over 2,000 cases of rape a year, that the gay community mobilized to affect change and push for better scientific studies and funding, that Sugar is not just a grain but also a Man and that the hide-and-seek game he executed took slightly longer than expected.
Wasn’t that exciting and valuable to learn? There are others, naturally. And they all sing of me. Listen to this song:
“The atmosphere is not a perfume—it has no taste of the distillation—it is odorless;
It is for my mouth forever—I am in love with it;
I will go to the bank by the wood, and become undisguised and naked;
I am mad for it to be in contact with me.”
...
I’m sorry. Sometimes I get to waxing a little too poetic. But everyone appreciates learning, right? Nothing is more powerful than the pursuit of learning, right?

Without makeup, we never would have seen Tom Hanks as a gangster or Viggo Mortenson as an Asian. We would never have made Spinal squirm at an eyeball. Or Viggo Mortenson as a lady. Anne Hathaway wouldn't be able to even dream a dream, see what Guy Pearce would look like in Montgomery Burns age. Or Viggo Mortenson as a devil of sorts. Ah yes...it is time for the category that Match-Cut is raving about...plenty of buzz for the BEST SONG category this year!!
This category is stupid. Everyone knows it's stupid.
I'm not sure why we bother with the "original song" category.
If we just drop Best Song entirely, any hurt feelings?
Drop it next year. I'm working on a ballot and currently have two songs nominated.
The field is stacked with ...four... nominees. Come on, can't even get pity votes for a 5th?
...anyway, here are the nominees this year:
"Abraham's Daughter" - Arcade Fire (The Hunger Games)
"Skyfall" - Adele (Skyfall)
"Who Did That to You" - John Legend (Django Unchained)
"Who Were We" - Kylie Minogue (Holy Motors)
Now quick, watch the medley of songs before YouTube figures out it's copyrighted material to find out the winner...

To Match Cut's respect, we picked pretty good songs at least.
Costumes don't make sense to me much. Moonrise Kingdom blew it out of the water too... COmpare that to the bold differences in Django Unchained, whether it be the high class sophisticated wear, the terrifying zoo-like treatment of the slaves, and the overall selection for Django himself is the most impressive to me. Cloud Atlas' complete summation of every genre is something admirable too.

02-26-2013, 12:25 AM
I didn't mean to start a thing, I think I may have voted for Moonrise too, though actually looking for images, I'm not sure why. Nearly every image I found was 'boyscout' uniforms, a girl in a dress, or the 2 kids in varous states of undress, definately not a whole lot of showiness in the costumes like the other nominees. Just thought I'd make a witty observation on our winning pick.

I have to admit that I'm probably further apart on critic consensus with This Is Not A Film than any movie I saw in 2012. The point of the film is apparent within minutes, but then the execution just drags and drags... I'm really not sure what there is to appreciate with it outside of its concept and one or two interesting recollections. I understand that this is an extremely unconventional view on this site, since it beat some of the best docs I've seen in years to win top honors.
I'm liking the awards for best song and makeup.
Not sure how Moonrise won for costumes, but apparently people saw something there that I didn't? I loved the movie, though.

To close out the musical awards, the BEST SCORE nominees...
We had an eclectic bunch of scores here from what I sampled: ambient and moody electronica, darkly percussive and sharp, hypnotically rhythmic and dissonant, whimsical and fairytalesque, cheerfully brassy and anthemic, and a heavy stingladen epic.
Your nominees:
Beyond the Black Rainbow (Sinoia Caves)
Zero Dark Thirty (Alexandre Desplat)
The Master (Jonny Greenwood)
Moonrise Kingdom (Alexandre Desplat)
Beasts of the Southern Wild (Dan Romer, Benh Zeitlin)
Cloud Atlas (Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek, and Reinhold Heil)
Only one can win (no tie this time, I promise)...

02-26-2013, 01:38 AM
Moonrise had fun costumes, from the Khaki Scout uniforms, to Bruce Willis' uniform, to whatever Bob Balaban was wearing. More apparent were the animal costumes in the Noah's Ark pageant. Also, Kara Hayward's dresses had a faintly nostalgic feel to them that appealed to me.
I tend to look at Best Costume differently though, it's less what is the most impressive sartorial creation and more how things suit the characters and the mood of the film. I nominated Flight of the Red Balloon one year because I loved what Juliette Binoche was wearing. *shrug*
I'm surprised Holy Motors didn't get nominated; I would've voted for that in a heartbeat.
Mysterious Dude

Costume design was an easy choice for me. I found the slightly-exaggerated 60's attire of Moonrise Kingdom a lot more interesting and fun than the usual 19th century stuff from most of the other movies. Haven't seen Cloud Atlas.

Great winners so far. Thought the costumes in Moonrise just had that sort of iconic, out-of-time quality of most Wes Anderson stuff. That of-its-own-world quality always gets more points from me than recreating actual historical wardrobe, however impressive that may be.

AND TIME FOR ANOTHER BRUTALLY HONEST BALLOT:
ANIMATED FILM: This was an easy choice because Arrietty the Borrower is awesome, and I haven't seen the other nominated films.
DOCUMENTARY: Also a no brainer, as I've only seen Searching for Sugar Man.
SONG: I didn't vote in this category because I couldn't be bothered to sit down and listen to all four songs.
SCORE: I can't really remember the music in either Beasts of the Southern Wild or Moonrise Kingdom, but I gave it to Anderson's film anyway just because I liked the movie more overall.
MAKEUP and VISUAL EFFECTS: I've only seen Prometheus and didn't like it enough to vote for it. In any case, I couldn't tell you what was makeup and what was done on computers (in 3D it all looked murky to me), and what's more, the Chinese censors snipped out the alien abortion bit, which I gather was the movie's big money shot--regarding which, I'm reminded of my ex-girlfriend's reaction to the censored version of Shortbus that was released in South Korea: "Personally, I'm okay with not seeing all that."
COSTUMES, ART DIRECTION, and EDITING: I've just seen Moonrise Kingdom in these categories. Guess which film I voted for.
SOUND EFFECTS: I've actually seen three of the films in this category (The Dark Knight Rises, Haywire, Looper), but I wasn't consciously aware of the sound design while I was watching them. I sort of liked both Haywire (for its terse narration) and Looper (for the clever plotting), but both struck me as rather disposable. Meanwhile, The Dark Knight Rises is an entertainingly silly movie, so at least in that regard it's an improvement on the two previous films which were merely silly. In the end, I didn't vote for any of them.
CINEMATOGRAPHY: This was a bit of a coin-flip; I liked both The Deep Blue Sea and Moonrise Kingdom a great deal and both films look great, cinematography-wise and everything else-wise, so I could've gone either way. I went with The Deep Blue Sea because I vaguely recall the lighting being slightly more important to setting the film's emotional tenor or something. In other words, I just went with my gut on this one.

I predicted that Moonrise Kingdom would sweep our awards weeks ago. Granted, it was my favorite of all the films we nominated (that weren't animated or a "documentary"), so I'm not opposed to the results, but they are hardly interesting. Yeah, I can see best Ensemble for Wes Anderson films quite easily. The number of awards that it's been awarded so far make me want to revisit it, though, since it felt like a solid Anderson effort but little more.
It's tricky since the film plays so much like a cinephile's dream of his (emphasis on the gender) ideal childhood, replete with adorable girlfriend. It walks a fine line with regard to overly sexualizing Hayward, and I think the film's more asexual than anything, but I can't help but wonder how it'll look in five years in the Anderson oeuvre.

I think Moonrise Kingdom is Wes's best and the best American film of the year, so I'm happy with the way things are going, but I voted for The Master for Best Ensemble. Which is only the second of my votes that didn't win (the first was the Moonrise score, just to further anger Wats).

What actually constitutes an ensemble? Because to me The Master is basically the two leads with Amy Adams trotted in now and then.

I guess I'm alone when I think that MK is the weakest Anderson film to date and Life Aquatic being his best. That's of course not to say I didn't enjoy every film he's ever made... but I felt MK was the weakest comically, the weakest story arch and the weakest creatively.

Moonrise Kingdom is definitely my favorite from Wes Anderson, and certainly deserving of many of its awards.
Can't really complain about The Master being left out of ensemble as its two leads (who probably have over 50% of their dialog) each won.

I think Killer Joe, performance-for-performance, dominates Moonrise Kingdom in the ensemble category. Django also seems like a better pick, if we're talking ensembles. MK just doesn't strike me as a performance-driven movie.
As for predictability, I really thought Zero Dark Thirty had a shot at the big prize. Odds lookin' mighty remote now.

Also, what's with the Matchies ignoring The Avengers? It was the highest grossing movie of last year, and therefore the most popular. I think the Matchies have an obligation to honor the tastes of average moviegoers.

MatchCut also ignored Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 and Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, the 4th and 13th highest grossing films of all-time. These poor genre films that only dominate the box office, make up a measly 80% of the conversations about films I come across IRL and online and continue to be to released en masse on a weekly basis. Why can't these poor movies also get all the Oscars and Matchies too!? *hurumph*

Part of the problem is obviously a lot of people haven't seen stuff that is "worthy", whatever that means, so when a category comes up where they've seen like two films, they'll just choose the film they liked best overall.
I'm guessing.
I don't vote in these things, because I haven't seen enough. I'm almost caught up on 2007 if you want to give that a go.

Mostly that the forum's love of Anderson might be disproportionate with his actual value. (I wasn't particularly surprised at the original reception of "Moonrise" either.)
But I am a bit taken aback that some folks reacted with dismay at the movie winning a contest with open votes. (I mean, seriously, guys, what did you really expect?).
Hope that makes more sense.

He's not as widely-loved as you are making out. I remember back when Life Aquatic and Darjeeling came out, there was much derision and underwhelmed reactions. In general, yeah, he's pretty well liked/loved around here, but I think MR winning this much so far is a little more of a phenomenon than symptomatic of the forum's general devotion to Wes Anderson.

Think the problem with lack of variety somewhat stems from a lot of us forgetting or neglecting to nominate in time. With a lot of choices that I and others might have voted for not on the ballot, a lot of those categories went to Moonrise.

I generally vote for the film in which the acting impressed me most across the board. Perhaps The Master's cast isn't diverse enough to deserve the award, but with Phoenix, Hoffman, and Adams there was more great acting per capita than in any other film this year.
How in the hell did Moonrise Kingdom win for best editing over Cloud Atlas? That makes no sense.
I guess it depends on what you think the value of editing is. I nominated The Turin Horse for the award. Sometimes good editing is knowing when not to cut. Why do you think Cloud Atlas was more impressive than Moonrise?

E, would it be possible to get all of the winners listed with their respective category for easy archiving/reflecting purposes?
Ultimately, I like the ZDT win, though there's almost a dozen films from this year that I seemingly need to see before feeling all that confident about that feeling. I wonder, though, how this film works for those that disputed the need to make/watch United 93? Does it work in a different register because it has a deeper consciousness about the sociopolitical reality of the 9/11 era rather than being caught in a of-the-moment vacuum, as U93 is?
