The Almosts!

All missed by one vote.

It's Such a Beautiful Day - Picture/Director/Original Screenplay
The Avengers - Director/Picture/Ensemble
Amour - Picture/Actor/Supporting Actress
Killer Joe - Actor/Supporting Actress
Magic Mike - Ensemble
Cloud Atlas - Supporting Actress & basically any technical category that it wasn't voted in.
Damsels in Distress - Original Screenplay/Ensemble
Life of Pi - Actor
Les Miserables - Actor/Ensemble/Adapted Screenplay
Take this Waltz - Actress
Lincoln - Supporting Actor
Cabin in the Woods - Supporting Actor
The Grey - Picture/Actor/Adapted Screenplay
Oslo, August 31st - Adapted Screenplay
The Master - Best Director
Holy Motors - Best Director

The Master and Cloud Atlas were multiple votes away from Best Picture.

Also, Waltz also had enough votes to go into the Supporting Actor category, but had more in Actor, so I chose him there.

How the fuck did The Master not get nominated for Best Picture and Best Director?

A last minute vote took out Carax and PTA from being nominated for Director. I even had their names written in my preview post. They were tied with Gomes.

I will not reveal the final voter!!

Can't believe my not voting cost It's Such a Beautiful Day a BP nom and PTA Best Director. This sucks.

And yay for Beyond the Black Rainbow's best score nod; even getting in before I updated my ballot to include it.

I didn't submit noms either, since I haven't seen enough, but if I had known about this anomaly beforehand, I'd sent a submission with just

BEST DIRECTOR
Paul Thomas Anderson, The Master

Let's lynch him/her!

Kinda bummed Fiona missed out on best song. I know she had at least three votes. The Kid with the Bike and The Cabin in the Woods are nice surprises in the Best Picture category. Although honestly, I would've rather seen The Master or Tabu there than the latter.

I'm going to try to watch ParaNorman and a few of the documentary nominees before voting.

I wasn't able to see The Master in time. Sorry.

Thanks for putting Waltz in the right category, Match Cut.

Wallis nominations are indeed silly.

Missing Juno Temple is my biggest disappointment. Sally Field? Bleh.

All in all, not bad though. Representative of the site I'd say.

I would request that in the future, we not try and time this with the Oscars. That seems unnecessary and I can count multiple people (myself included) who would probably vote if we had another month or so to catch some of the later-released films, not to mention some of the films themselves getting the proper support. I mean, both The Master and Holy Motors are being released on video/streaming, but too late.

All of you who could have helped It's Such a Beautiful Day get noms and didn't, be glad we don't have negative rep anymore.

I will be watching Swing Vote (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1027862/) on a loop all weekend as penance - a far worse fate than a mere negative rep or lynching.

But I'm with Raiders on not doing these so early in the year. It's only going to hurt the smaller films that didn't hit theaters outside of major markets.

Hasn't The Master been out on Blu-ray for a few weeks? No excuses.

No, it hasn't. And for that reason and many others, I agree with the growing sentiment that these should be pushed back. Summer would be an ideal time for me, or very late spring. Plenty of time to watch and digest everything I want to see.

Spinal
02-16-2013, 08:04 PM
I like the timing the way it is now. I think it's more fun to have it as a quick response to the awards season rather than wait until a time when we supposedly will be able to 'get it right'.

Ezee E
02-16-2013, 08:21 PM
There's never an ideal time really. Everyone would lose track or interest by Springtime in my opinion. Agreed with Spinal.

I'm worried that we're having this discussion a little belatedly. I admit that I wish that I had time to get to DVD copies of The Master and Holy Motors before compiling my list, but I've known that since looking up those two films' DVD releases and that didn't affect the order of films I've sought out.

And if E does extend the ballots, then he has to do this all over again, and that amount of work isn't worth the difference that it'll make... besides, one of us (Spinal usually, though I'm not at all suggesting he is tied to such an obligation going forward) hosts what is essentially a "revisiting the past year" thread in the summer/autumn, anyway. And the differences between that thread and the Matchies are usually interesting to examine.

Spinal
02-16-2013, 08:55 PM
Best Actor should be interesting. Day-Lewis is not nearly the lock I might have originally thought. Lavant, Waltz and Phoenix will undoubtedly all have their supporters.

Not sure how we can be having it belatedly. It was referring to future years obviously, not this year.

In any case, it's just my opinion. I'm not voting until I have seen most of the films I want to, so it is fine if that means I don't contribute, it's my choice, just thought I'd point out that it makes little sense in my opinion to time it with the Oscars. I would rather have the majority of people have a good chance to see most of the top competitive films. We aren't given screeners.

Nominated films I have yet to see:In order from the ones I'm most interested in seeing to the ones I'm least interested in: Holy Motors (Carax + mega-hype), Tabu (mega-hype since Berlin a year ago), This Is Not a Film (Panahi + mega-hype), The Master (Anderson + mega-hype), How to Survive a Plague (interesting topic and solid reviews), Django Unchained (it's Tarantino), It's Such a Beautiful Day (internet buzz), Zero Dark Thirty (just to see what all the fuss is about), The Queen of Versailles (solid reviews), Cloud Atlas (remember Bound? That was a good one; Tykwer's Heaven is also awesome), Oslo, August 31st (solid reviews but I still haven't seen Le Feu follet), Haywire (I generally like Soderbergh's movies and I'm only two away from a free sandwich), ParaNorman (could be cute or funny, I guess), The Impostor (the subject sounds interesting), Wreck-It Ralph (I can't get excited for a movie about a character from a video game, no matter what Kristin Thompson says), Lincoln (I haven't liked a Spielberg movie in over a decade but I wouldn't rule it out completely), Life of Pi (I generally like Ang Lee but can't get excited about this one), Beyond the Black Rainbow (looks fanboyish), The Invisible War (Kirby Dick advocacy doc? Shrug), Skyfall (if you've seen one, you've seen 'em all), Brave (having already seen Mulan, I figure this is superfluous; even Pixar apologists concede it's one of their lesser efforts), Cabin in the Woods (Roger Ebert: "It's like final exam for fanboys"; no thanks), The Avengers (I'm seriously too old for this shit), Les Misérables (fuck no).

I have Tabu, Cloud Atlas, and Haywire on DVD, so I'll try to get to those before voting.

$21, yes.

I was just checking. It's actually $28 with shipping which is quite a bit more then I'm willing to spend to blind watch something.

I had read some other posts complaining about the fact that not a lot of people were nominating this and considering the options are downloading illegally or paying $28 for it I can see why it wasn't getting a ton of nominations.

Not really. People always say this, but it's just that Hollywood didn't have much overlap between female-driven, audience/critic-approved films this year (shocker). It's just that the really marvelous performances weren't marketed well.

I mean, look at these:

Michelle Williams, Take This Waltz
Rachel Weisz, The Deep Blue Sea
Nadezhda Markina, Elena
Nina Hoss, Barbara

I think our best actor lineup is pretty exceptional.

Indeed.
