While hunting down bootleg kung-fu DVDs in a Chinatown pawnshop...

I was just doing this today!

I am so there.

Ugh, no kidding.

Jackie Chan and Jet Li oblige me to see it, nevertheless.

I feel the same way. I'll see it because this is a legendary combination.

If only they had metter under better circumstances...like another Once Upon a Time in China movie, directed by Tsui Hark with choreography by Woo Ping.

Now that would have me excited.

The combo of Li and Chan make this a rental at best. I too wish they had collaborated on a better film back when they were in the prime of their careers.

Amen brother! White people make everything better!Heh. Apparently if whitey doesn't live in your time period, through the magic of time travel as showcased in movies whitey will come to your period! To take your women and screw shit up! Because....

THAT'S WHITEY! Hey that could be a sitcom.

Shouldn't that be "screw your women and take your shit"?

The shit in question, of course, being two of your greatest martial arts talents.

Thank God I don't care much for either Li or Chan, or I'd be severely disappointed.

Do we need some punkass kid from the present "magically" stumbling into another era?

No doubt the ensuing clash between East and West is going to be gut-bustingly funny.

in a movie starring alien and predator, the last thing people want to see is stupid cardboard human characters. the same goes here.

Funny how all of a sudden Angarano isn't the center of the movie. God bless the editing of trailers. So...I think it looks like fun.

It's a clever hiding. At least we know the white kid's getting beat up. I LOOOOOVE that shot of both Jackie Chan and Jet Li putting their feet on his chest. That's gotta be the scariest shit in the world next to Bruce Lee catching you with his wife.

Just found out Peter Pau is the cinematographer, which certainly helps. Bride With White Hair, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Promise - he's shot a lot of pretty movies.

This movie looks awesome, as not only do we see Jet Li fight Jackie Chan but also that annoying white boy getting his ass kicked in training by the pair of them. Sweetness.

Aside from the pairing, I feel that the crew is pretty sweet also.

Action director Yuen Woo Ping, Peter Pau as cinematographer... and that pretty art direction is from the guy who did Lust, Caution.

I'm not completely sold on Minkoff. I can't imagine what it'd be like if they got Ronny Yu or Ringo Lam.

now if only the movie is edited in the same manner.

it's stupid anyway. putting in an american kid in order for audiences to feel "related" to. the concept is so twenty years ago. now people are identified more with jet li and jackie chan than some white punk.

I just caught this trailer at the theater tonight. I honestly couldn't tell if it was a spoof or not. There were parts that were clearly supposed to be funny but the presentation of the plot and overall framing of the shots was so serious

I'm betting the Angarano bo stuff was CG. Because that was kinda crazy--I'd have to see a better quality version of it, but it looks like he pulls out some moves that the laws of physics would not allow.

I love Jackie Chan.

On closer inspection, I can almost guarantee it's trickery. The bit where he's lying on his back and passes it under a leg is not right.

Anyone else notice how the whole apparent bookending parts of this movie set in the present day have been totally absent from the commercials?

They're probably still in the movie, but wouldn't it be something if they cut that from the film?

Doesn't suffer from any condescension that some "stranger in a strange land" films are suseptible to? Anyone surprised by the present day scenes since they've been so absent from the ads?

Not really... I mean, the structure is so familiar that you've got to know that when it's about some white kid in a strange magical Chinese land, there's got to be some dimension hopping or time travel involved.

By the way, this film has my favorite title sequence so far this year. They animated classic posters of Shaw Bros movies. It looked great, and goes well with the movie since nearly every fight scene and character is an homage to something.

Saw this today. It was cute. The present day scenes were pretty groan-inducing and creaky, but everything was pretty entertaining. The long-awaited showdown between Li and Chan did not disappoint. It was nice seeing Chan return to the drunken fighting routine. Making them true adversaries would have been interesting.

Although is it just me, or is Chan's English actually getting worse the older he gets? I swear I could barely understand half of what he was saying in this movie. He was nearly indecipherable.

I think this is the first film I've seen on a digital projector. It was ridiculously clear. My jaw dropped upon seeing the trailer for Hellboy 2.

i like it. the kid is not as annoying. the movie does a competent job promoting this faulty karate-kid idea that any white dude can be a kung fu master with enough training. also unlike chan's earlier hollywood there is no trace of westernization. (no "the run rises there, but it sets here" kinda deal.) the movie well embraces eastern idea -- i refrain from the word "philosophy" -- and if anything, it's the easternization of the white kid.

I hope to see it sometime before the weekend. I need a break from work and it's about the only thing in the last few weeks that I'd venture out to my theatre to see. Looking forward to IM though.

Also, a theatre near me is showing The Rocky Horror Picture Show.......at midnight, course.
