I was actually a big fan of the anime.

This year the live-action adaptation is being released, starring Koyuki, Colin Salmon, and Gianna Jin as the titular character, Saya.

Here are some production photos. If they're any indication, it's going to have a fantastic look to it...

Cool, looks similar to Dororo.

I hated the anime, but I am hoping this will be good, and, maybe, tell an actual story with some character development.

I thought the anime kind of sucked. Neat opening scene though.

The photos are lovely, but I have never seen the anime.

Unfamiliar with the anime (been meaning to watch it for forever), but this looks like it will at the very least have some pretty keen visuals.

The anime is really nothing special: generic story and look and a good number of very obnoxious characters. The first half of its run seemed to be mostly Saya whining and being indecisive. Seemed like they were trying to mimic the arc of the lead character from Neon Genesis Evangelion.

And if I had a dime for every time the one guy said, "Saya!" I'm sure the voice actor did too because I think they are just looping the exact same phrasing of it over and over again.

I'd say there are more worthy anime out there in need of adapting to the big screen.

Well, most of its acclaim was for its animation process, which seamlessly blended 3D computer animation and traditional 2D animation. That's how I found out about the film back in 2001, after hearing about those praises.

I think Production I.G. made the movie as an experiment, actually.

90 minutes isn't a short movie.

And yes, it was 48 minutes.

Ah that's right. It took place on a military base or something?

Yes. A school on a military base.

Yeah, I think I remember reading a blurb about James Cameron praising it.

Anyways, this does look fun. I can't really do anything more than repeat the usual "anime wasn't that good, hope this is better" sentiment.

An action sequence later in the film looks partially lifted from 'Underworld Evolution'! For a film made by non-Japanese it surely ends like one. It's finale reveals a few stereotypical revelations that most film fans will groan about. Followed by an vague ending that I honestly didn't care about one bit.

I'm sure there will be fans of this kind of film. It is definitely not a horrible film but it is not a great film by any means

5/10

Sure, you mean the Underworld thing or the revelations and ending? I agree with that post though, I did not care for the ending either. However, I think the ending was directly taken from the anime, but I'm not sure because I haven't seen the anime in a couple years. The Underworld thing scene they are talking about is a scene in which a flying demon attacks the girls on a truck. It's very similar to the scene from the second Underworld movie.

I thought the movie looked amazing, cinematography wise and costumes etc. But overall, the movie was not very good. The main actress just is not convincing in all the action scenes and it is pretty obvious she has no martial arts skills and they hide this by a lot of quick cuts and slow-mo. Very disappointing. I thought the story was just as vague as the anime. The CGI was also pretty bad and especially the fake blood was distracting. I did like the pace and length of the movie though, I believe it was just a 90 minutes long. It's a nice break from all the 2 hour movies.

Been hearing really terrible things about this. Apparently the first 40 minutes is a straight remake of the anime, and the rest is some shit they made up, including long arbitrary flashbacks so they can have fight scenes unrelated to the plot.

Oh you guys have been talking about it already. Pardon me. Yeah, I also heard complaints about the really bad fake CGI blood.

Yeh this was disappointing. The fake CGI blood is the most distracting effect I've seen in any movie. It's streaming on Netflix for anyone that's interested.
