 I am moving to South Korea in a month to teach english...so january = no job + 3-4 films a day. I have already watched 18 films in this young year (a handful of them were some Les Blank shorts)
I definitely need to see some more Katz. I held a bias against his work without seeing it simply because of of how many times mumblecorish indie has offended my sensibilities. The only mumbecore film I would call great is Mutual Appreciation. I loathe Lena Dunham.
Ferrara's the best, man.
I dont know about the best, but he owned the early to mid 90's, and Ms. 45 is a masterpiece as well. 4:44 Last Day on Earth was a bore though.

Makes sense, most people say it's inferior. For me, Spielberg was such a staple of my childhood that had I not sat down and watched the movie through, I likely would have seen it's combined footage between commercials on network television and out of the corners of my eyes at friends' houses.

I wasn't sure if I'd seen it as a kid or not until I watched it the other night.
I find Temple of Doom to be passable entertainment. Ranks third in the Indy movies. Certainly liked it more as a kid, but still enjoyable.
Hell, when I walked into the Ossuary at Sedlec (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedlec_ossuary), the chanting from Temple of Doom kicked in in my head and I started giggling.

Yeah, that last moment was great. Nothing...nothing...nothing... wait...and I'm on the edge of my seat the whole time. And it's exciting, but it's also tragic. I wasn't prepared for how funny it is. So many times when Mifune all but looks at the camera and says, "Can you believe these idiots?"

Oh good. I've been feeling guilty for being lukewarm on this for a while now.
I'm a little bit leery of films that put their themes so bluntly into the mouths of their characters ("I believe in what I own. I love money. I hate death."/"You'll die like everyone else"). Doesn't do much for me.
Visually, it's great, and it has an emotional wallop even as it kind of keeps you at an emotional distance most of the time (and least, for me anyway).

Which Faust, Winston*?
Jan Svankmajer's. Admired the metatextual aspect, can't think of many mythic films that so overtly deal with the cultural history of their stories, and the noise the puppet Mephistopholes makes is the best thing ever but I can't deny finding the film a bit of a trial at times. There's nothing as nothing as Alice's constant fourth wall breaking, but Svankmajer's tendency towards repetition of an effect still tried my patience.
Want to seee Little Otik at some point this year.

Being in the mood for an old-timey fantasy in the vein of Portrait of Jennie and The Devil and Daniel Webster, I searched 'fantasy' in the They Shoot Pictures list on iCheckMovies. Those old-timey fantasies are magical. Or maybe it's just those three movies; I also watched The Ghost and Mrs. Muir recently and loathed it.

Peter Ibbetson is great; discovered it from Adrian Martin's Sight & Sound top 10 from '02. Those old-timey transcendental-love-themed movies that Melville mentions are also notable for being championed by Andre Breton back in their day, and had a major influence on the surrealists of yore.

Yeah I really like Peter Ibbetson as well - and I'm no fan of Cooper. One of the top films from 1935. I'd say it was influenced by some of the surrealist films of the late 20s.

Yeah, all three are great. As Boner and Yxklyx mentioned, they have a somewhat surreal style. Like in a fairy tale, magical things happen without exposition dwelling on them or pointing at them; but unlike most fairy tales, the movies feel deeply inside their magical atmosphere, following paths perpendicular to reality as if they're the perfectly natural routes.
Stay away from The Ghost and Mrs Muir unless you like corny seamen...which actually makes it sound better than it is. It's not really similar to the others; it's bad jokes and a mundane tone in place of the others' romantic surrealism.

Comparing Petter Ibbetson to Portrait of Jennie is very apt though. I think there are a few British Gothic Romances from this period that are similar but not quite - there's one I saw which has Christopher Lee in his first role for instance.

Corridor of Mirrors? Looks promising. I'd be interested in seeing other movies of the same sort. Even things further afield like the Val Lewton horror movies have a bit of the same magical romantic atmosphere (though more overtly Romantic in that case).

Ahhhh yeah. That would flat out suck.
This'll sound imperialistic (because it is, haha) -- but I miss the Hong Kong industry that existed before 1997. The law said every movie made there had to have English subtitles, and so they did.
Stateside this meant I could walk into any theater in Chinatown and watch a movie fresh from HK, or rent something from a back-alley videostore without worry (frequently before these movies were "officially" released by US distributors).
Nowadays, not so much. You don't get the automatic (and occasionally hilarious) English subtitles with every new release.

I think I get what you're saying; that there was an economy of formal aptitude to it that tends to be lacking in the more bloated Hollywood dramas of recent, which I can't muster up the energy to disagree with.

Gets a little tougher with more obscure releases since they don't have proper international English-language releases. I generally go for what's listed as the "International" title on IMDb, even if it doesn't show up in the heading.

Switchblade Sisters is surprisingly entertaining, despite some hammy dialogue and acting. Character dynamics are constantly shifting in interesting directions. Cinematography never goes beyond serviceable. The ultra-low budget shows itself a few times. There's one scene in a juvenile detention ward that is eye-rolling, but they never take anything seriously enough for it to really damage the fun.

I've always wanted to see Swtichblade Sisters ever since Ebert bashed it. Plus its directed by Jack Hill so it can't be all bad.

I hated everything about Beyond the Black Rainbow except some of the effect heavy psychedelic sequences. The end was utter shit.
But everything was a heavy effect psychedelic sequence! I agree that the ending was unfortunate.
Glad you liked the Kramer. I put Milestones near the top of last year's film log but Route One, USA made me think I overvalued the former (which is more fictional; very much in the same vein as Peter Watkins).

Man, that shit was weak.
However, the use of "Anonymous" by SSQ over the end credits did manage to placate my anger somewhat.
Quirky fun-fact: "Anonymous" also played over the end credits of Cavegirl, a Crown International Pictures release from 1985.

A combination of both. I've seen and liked (to varying degrees) 7, 12, 14, 15 and 16. I love the Arnold film, but it felt strange to say I envy you getting to see something so recent.

I kind of am, but not completely and that's part of my love for it. I genuinely enjoyed it as entertaining sci-fi plus ironically found all kinds of brilliant social commentary in it. There's also 3 or 4 insanely beautiful tableaux that I was shocked to find in the middle of this kind of tweener popcorn junk. I mean, it's bad and the beginning is intensely terrible, but as it went along I just fell more and more in love with it and cartwheeled out of the theater. It's such a stupid movie that it's accidently genius, just like with The Happening.

11. Crash (1996), Netflix DVDMaybe I had overly high expectations after Hunger but I thought Shame only got interesting towards the end with the suicide attempt. Like Somewhere but without Elle Fanning, it's another movie about a dude with white people problems (too much money, not enough heterosexual monogamy). Where's the suffering and bottomless despair?
Now Crash, on the other hand, that's fucking entertainment.

Damu, is that "spoiler" list in order? Because, Jesus, I really need to see "VHS" then.

To be fair, horror anthologies can cut past my defenses pretty quickly, but I really did think a few of the segments were fantastic, and I dig on the spirit of such things. I especially liked how the segments were barely related by the "real footage" wrinkle, which allowed them to play differently with style and substance, as opposed to more unified flicks like Trick 'r Treat and Creepshow.

Maybe I had overly high expectations after Hunger but I thought Shame only got interesting towards the end with the suicide attempt. Like Somewhere but without Elle Fanning, it's another movie about a dude with white people problems (too much money, not enough heterosexual monogamy). Where's the suffering and bottomless despair?
Now Crash, on the other hand, that's fucking entertainment.I found Shame to be slowly engaging, grabbing my attention and causing me to actually care about a man with destructive tendencies. I thought that Crash could have gone farther enough, but once again I was indeed fascinated by the similar subject of people who could not let go of terrible habits. Both movie are worth seeing, and while I prefer Shame to Crash I wonder if my opinion will end up being switched by second viewings. There is a poetry involved in both, and since I engage in drinking, fast food, smoking weed sometimes and also questionable behavior at times I can all too well identify with the characters of both movies. I can't/won't comment about the suicide attempt...

Eh. A couple good segments, an eh segment, and a colossal shit segment.
EDIT: Still worth checking out. Full discussion available in the horror thread.
