View Full Version : Let's do a Film Swap: Raiders edition

dreamdead

So here's my masochistic thought. Let's commemorate our fine administrator, by having each participant watch a film that Raiders has on his Top 100 (which can be located here (http://matchcut.org/viewtopic.php?t=7971&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0)). What's the purpose behind this plan, you ask? Obviously to celebrate the fine taste of our most worthy administrator and pass on the quality of his taste to others. A secondary aim, of course, is to laugh maniacally when we finish a film and realize that Raiders has this piece of shit on his Top 100 list.

How's it work. Simple. Pick a film from Raiders' list that you haven't already seen. Announce what it is you'll be watching within a week here, and then watch this "masterpiece" and post a review of your thoughts within 3 weeks time. What's to keep us on track? Why, Raiders' realization that we're gonna tear his tastes a new one.

Sign up below.

dreamdead will watch Charulata (Satyajit Ray)
philosophe_rouge will watch Make Way for Tomorrow (Leo McCarey)
Qrazy will watch Celine and Julie go Boating
Melville will watch Diabolique
Antoine will watch In a Year with 13 Moons (Fassbinder)
ledfloyd will watch Persona (Ingmar Bergman)

Is this "masturbate to Raiders" day?

Wow. From what I've seen (despairingly small portion), Raiders does have some damn fine taste. I'm totally in.

Also, anyone know anything about when the old site might go down? Perhaps I'll go through and salvage every list I can find before we lose it forever.

I thought this was a Film Swap where everyone on the site demands that Ivan Drago watch Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I dunno...Raiders and I so rarely agree that I'm not sure this is the safest film swap for me to participate in...

The swap bit seems like a bit of an unnecessary step in this one. Couldn't you just have people choose one of those films to watch and watch it?

indeed. if that's the case, i want to watch The Conversation (Francis Ford Coppola, 1974) for it's the highest film in his list that i haven't watched and have a strong desire to see.

Edited first post accordingly....

Since this'll be confusing I'll start. We can probably have duplicates, but things will be cooler if there aren't.

I will have seen his #1-17 if I view his #10 film: Charulata (Satyajit Ray, 1964), so I call dibs on that one.

I've decided to tentatively watch Make Way for Tomorrow (Leo McCarey, 1937). I know where to get a copy, but by the looks of things it might be unwatcheable... I'm hoping this isn't the case, but my back-up will be The Love of Jeanne Ney (Georg Wilhelm Pabst, 1927)

I'm going to watch Celine and Julie go Boating because it's the only one I have readily available to me.

This seems like a good idea, since of all the match-cut lists, Raiders' probably mirrors my own taste most closely. I think I'll pick up Diabolique and The Servant from the library today. However, I never did write a review for the last film swap (sorry Watashi), so I'm not promising any reviews this time.

I'm making an ultimatum in my thread: somebody watch Larisa Shepitko's The Ascent.

A grainy but still watchable version is here on Youtube:

Part 1 (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=58845079910334 55652&q=ascent+shepitko&total=3&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=1)

Those of you who have Karagarga should have a clearer copy available to you.

Kind of surprised it made the list actually. It's visually compelling, particularly the opening scene, but the drama and general storyline is fairly atrocious in my opinion. The rest of the list gets my endorsement for the most part... haven't seen these.
