I dunno what Detention is but Killer Joe definitely has a 2012 US release date, so it should count.

You know it's a shitty year in film when you've seen only 17 movies, and you don't nominate your favorite director's new movie for Picture or Director.

Trying to decode this sentence...

I stopped after "17 movies" since that essentially makes everything that comes after it meaningless.

Can we make some fun new categories this year? Kind of what the MTV Movie Awards do? I don't mean we should add Best Kiss or anything, but maybe we could get genre specific? Best Horror? Best Action Sequence?

Just throwing stuff out there.

If we're going by US release dates and the extended cut has a 2012 US theatrical release date, there's really nothing to debate. I say just vote for it.

Beasts... is okay. It starts and ends great, but in the middle, there's only a few scenes that seem to have any energy to them. Opening up the crab, and the father getting her to arm wrestle/not cry. I don't know. Just not much I get out of it.

Hm, can you give me a hint how to acquire Sister, The Color Wheel, and This is Not a Film (it's topical to bootleg this one!)? PM if necessary.

This is getting embarrassing, but I seem to have mixed up Sister with something else as well. I must've saw it mentioned and assumed it was on KG. If it was uploaded there, it's since been deleted, which may very well be the case if it wasn't yet available on DVD or was improperly ripped.

The other two are available on KG, and I know this because both are on my hard drive.

Probably a dumb question but is there an easy way to figure out if something is adapted or not. Someone has The Dark Knight Rises as best adapted screenplay yet it was co-written by Nolan. Is it automatically adapted because it's based on an existing character?

Holy Motors is more fun to reminisce and read about then to actually watch. It looks nice, but ultimately seems too in love with itself. Seems like something in a fragrance commercial.

And Flight... Well, it may have the sequence of the year in the airplane sequence, but everything else is a large bore. I'm curious what makes Zemeckis return to live action for this. Washington holds the movie, while Goodman's character seems to be from a Coen world.

Agreed. That one was a little more easier to agree on. The film is divided it two equal halfs with both actresses getting the majority of the screen time in their respective halfs. So yes, they are both leads.

Foxx and Waltz are in the movie from beginning to end. Waltz has most of the dialog, but Foxx is right next to him the entire time. Does Foxx not a get a lead because Waltz gets most of the dialog? No. I just didn't think Foxx was that great to be nominated.

"Lead" and "supporting" performances are arbitrary labels that exist only for the purpose of handing out industry awards and determining who gets paid what salary. Although I'm sympathetic to people wanting to praise good work (or what they consider to be good work), I hate atomized categories with a passion. How can I separate Wes Anderson's direction from the elements that his mise en scène consists of (production design, costumes, lighting, acting), or Rachel Weisz's performance from the writing, without which she wouldn't have a character to play? And how am I supposed to vote on writing when I haven't read any of the screenplays (much less the books that some of them are based on)? Impardonnables is brimming with particular, nuanced characterizations, but should the credit for this go to Philippe Dijon who wrote the novel on which the film is based, the script, or the cast?

Incidentally, voting on actors and actresses separately strikes me as a form of affirmative action that wouldn't fly in any other category. Why isn't there an Oscar for best black sound editing or best gay cinematography?

I think it would be better to simplify the ballot (and voting process) to something along the lines of the Village Voice poll: a top ten for best picture, ten unreleased films, five lead performances and five supporting performances, and one choice each for best director, best documentary, best first film, and worst film.

Charlotte Gainsbourg is totally co-lead (because, I know this is shocking, but there can be more than one lead even if they're the same gender), but she won the Matchie for Best Supporting Actress (http://match-cut.org/showpost.php?p=404868&postcount=136) last year. I even mocked her placement in the "nominee" presentation.

And the Waltz categorization in supporting is dumb, too. If a showier movie star was cast, the role would likely be considered "lead."

I just don't see why we use essentially the same categories as the Oscars. I think it would be better to simplify the ballot (and voting process) to something along the lines of the Village Voice poll: a top ten for best picture, ten unreleased films, five lead performances and five supporting performances, and one choice each for best director, best documentary, best first film, and worst film.
How many of us are likely to have seen ten unreleased films? And taking out the cinematography award? You disgust me.

This would eliminate neither the lead/supporting distinction or having to separate a director's role from the role of everyone else.

This would eliminate neither the lead/supporting distinction or having to separate a director's role from the role of everyone else.I never said it would, but if we're going to have atomized categories (as opposed to just voting on the best films of the year), it would at least make it less tedious to write out a ballot and perhaps encourage more people to vote.

That said, I've counted these ballots before and very few people care at all about the Original Song category. It could disappear and probably not be missed.

Most hypocritical ever? Considering his insistence on how so many Hollywood films don't care about sound and image and now his dismissal of the one category most crucial to image-making as that of creating "pretty pictures", I'd say so.

But unless you are blind, how something is lit, the type of film stock (or video resolution), the opening of the aperture of the lens, and the type of lens used all have meaning. A director can describe the type of look or give examples from other films, but more often than not, the cinematographer is the one to implement the nuts-and-bolts technique of achieving that look.

Most hypocritical ever? Considering his insistence on how so many Hollywood films don't care about sound and image and now his dismissal of the one category most crucial to image-making as that of creating "pretty pictures", I'd say so.My main objection to all the categories, including cinematography, is that they require one to compare things that aren't comparable. The cinematography in The Deep Blue Sea and The Turin Horse stand out in part because of the drab colour scheme in the former and the absence of colour altogether in the latter, which puts a greater emphasis on light and texture than in a film like Moonrise Kingdom, where what stands out are the colours of the sets and costumes. On the other hand, Le Gamin au vélo isn't going to win any awards for cinematography or production design because the DP did such a good job that it doesn't look like they used any artificial light at all, and the production design is so seamless that I couldn't tell which interior scenes were shot on location and which were shot in a studio. Instead of best cinematography or best production design, we should really say most conspicuous.

And if we just drop Best Song entirely, any hurt feelings?

I've nominated voice actors in the regular acting categories before, but I'm probably one of the few who have. A separate category might be a fun idea, I admit I still usually overlook animated films when filling in the acting categories.

And if we just drop Best Song entirely, any hurt feelings?

Well, this is one year I'm actually finding it hard to whittle down just five nominees, so personally I'd be against it. But at the same time, if anyone would be interested in a compromise like "Best Use of a Song in a Film" or something, that could be less complicated since often figuring out what songs were specifically written for a film can sometimes be a hassle.

There's still so much I want to see, I'm not even close to being satisfied with that ballot. Unfortunately, I've also been incredibly busy the last couple weeks so I haven't been able to catch up like I had hoped.

I'm hoping to squeeze a few things in before submitting a final ballot to E. Going to try to hit Amour in theatres, and then trawl Netflix for whatever they're streaming (a quick check and I see The Deep Blue Sea, Gerhard Richter Painting, Where Do We Go Now?, Beyond the Black Rainbow, The Lady, The Loneliest Planet, Footnote).

I may wait a few days before submitting my final ballot. There's still a chance I might see something. Also, it has been reported that your mailbox is full (http://matchcut.artboiled.com/showthread.php?4529-2012-MATCH-CUT-AWARD-NOMINATIONS&p=463729#post463729).

Are we still doing FYC's?

This might get overlooked because it's not in a movie people might be thinking about otherwise, but:

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION

Fiona Apple - Dull Tool (from This Is 40)

and
Karen O - Strange Love (from Frankenweenie)

Feels odd since I haven't seen the film and have no idea about the song's context within the film (well, sort of), but I'M. ALL. OVER. IT.

I'm not sure why we bother with the "original song" category, but so long as we do, this should be getting votes:

Ahhh! Ok, ok. I'll get it done, although I never did get to Sister, 5 Broken Cameras, or a handful of others.

Oh, umm, late-entry FYC:

The movie I most regret having missed in theaters is Cloud Atlas. It almost certainly would have helped fill out some of the technical awards, at least.

Mine is Life of Pi. I wish I could have seen that 3D.

Btw, the company did the special effects on that movie just filed Chapter 11.

Doubt I'm gonna get anything else in, so I submitted it. I eliminated the categories I didn't have at least 3 noms for out of fairness.
