I wish this film was as stoopid-but-vibrant as that poster.

I don't exactly understand the comedy element of this film. O'Brien is amusingly self-deprecating, I suppose, but all the guffaws my audience of elderly elicited seemed to undermine--instead of nervously alleviate (which I guess is what Lewin is going for?)--the way this topic is pragmatically presented by Hunt's character.

And, oh man, every scene with Macy, aka Father Audience Surrogate, is fairly brutal and purely functional. Well, second worse to all the hotel front desk nonsense.

This was like a Deadwood reunion. Way sadder then I thought it would be going in. The final shot with the cat on the iron lung wrecked me.

It's an affecting movie that hits most of the right notes, despite its narrative shortcomings. Lewin relies way too much on the framing device to convey information, and it's simply too corny a lot of the time.

This is a good film. A few of the storytelling devices were way too obvious for my taste, specially Macy's kind priest character - but its heart is on the right place and frankly, the honest portrayal of sexual needs puts most other films to shame.

I look forward to any John Hawkes performance, too. He's just done his "handicapped" performance, I want to see what he'll do next.
