View Full Version : Movies that exist

Just now I stumbled upon this film's imdb page:
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QzKjYKyjFmU/TLg908qqfBI/AAAAAAAAACM/lyFjNLlolLc/s1600/hereafter+movie.jpg
And my immediate reaction was: "oh, I forgot this exists".
I haven't heard any of my friends mention Hereafter. I know critics thought it was a mixed bag, but no one downright hated it (or loved it, for that matter).
So it made me think: what are some other movies that have fairly famous people in them, yet no one ever talks about. No admirers, no haters.

Thought of another one:

Neil Jordan, solid director. Really good cast. Michael Collins was interesting enough.
Don't remember a thing about this movie, though. I guess Liam wanted another Oscar. That didn't happen.

Although the rules to this are arbitrary at best, I don't consider You've Got Mail to belong in here for several reasons:
reunites Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan for a third time
remake of Shop Around the Corner
all downhill from here for Meg RyanI submit

Haven't seen the movie since I was studying the period in high school history but I remember this being a really compelling take on Michael Collins' life without too much fabrication in it. I also remember Julia Roberts with a bad Irish accent. Wouldn't mind seeing it again.
Liam doesn't have a first Oscar btw.

Cheers Winston*, this carefully constructed thread is now officially falling apart at the seams.
All this research for nothing. Absolutely nothing. I could've spent my time playing games with my kids and reading them bedtime stories, instead of working on an algorithm that determines these movies based on imdb-scores and page hits.
Now here I am, admitting my defeat while my son calls for his father. Am I even to be called that still, now that you've completely emasculated me?
I hope you enjoy Michael Collins when you get another chance to watch it. I really, really do.

Posted these two together in another thread a while back, but seems apt for this discussion. If you can tell these two movies apart based on pure memory alone, then you are better than I am.

I've seen this twice --- accidentally, because I completely forgot that I had seen it before. It took me like 20 minutes to realize it.
Same thing happened with one of Jason Statham's movies. I rented it all psyched to see some cop action movie .. Hit play .. Realized after 20 minutes that I had seen it before. (It's the one were he's paired with a gay cop played by Paddy Whatshisname).

Shrug. I have not heard one person mention either of those films in the last 10 years of my being an avid film viewer. The latter makes sense that I never would have heard of it because I was 6 years old when it came out. The former I have heard of the sequel but not the original.

Sleeping with the Enemy got a lot of attention because it was the first movie Julia Roberts did after Pretty Woman.
Kiss the Girls was Ashley Judd's commercial breakout. She got positive critical notice for Ruby in Paradise, then was paired with Morgan Freeman (post Shawshank) in a thriller based on a popular novel by James Patterson. She then went on to star in several similar thrillers. (There's one with Ewan McGregor called Eye of the Beholder which is just God awful).
As Shoe notes, the pair made another movie afterwards too -- and the character played by Freeman (Alex Cross) was recently featured in a 'reboot' attempt.

City by the Sea is the movie where James Franco delivers a better performance than Robert De Niro.
88 Minutes is the Al Pacino movie that led to Jon Avnet getting him and De Niro together.
Speaking of, Righteous Kill deserves a special place for managing to be completely and utterly forgettable despite the fact that it has a historic pairing.

You've Got Mail was okay. Striking Distance is bad, but its hilarious and entertaining regardless.
Space Cowboys was decent. Old People in Space FTW
I saw Feast of Love, and I find it very memorable because there's a scene where Morgan Freeman smiles proudly as he watches two teenagers have sex in the middle of a football field. It's kind of unforgettable. That's unintentionally hilarious.
I liked Crazy Heart, but I'll admit its kind of forgettable.

Jagged Edge was a big, big hit on its release, but you're right it's not talked about today.
Which brings up an interesting question. Are "movies that exist" movies that were obscure in release and just stayed that way? Or can a movie that was widely seen & popular in its day qualify a few decades later?
Like, Marty and The Greatest Show on Earth both won Ocars (and Marty is actually a good little film) but I can't remember hearing anybody ever talk about them.
Are they "movies that exist" now?

Again, arbitrary rules, but for me "movies that exist" are films that boost a certain pedigree, and had a certain amount of buzz surrounding them when released, yet people seem to have forgotten about completely now.
If rated properly some of these could be considered good, some bad. I just see them as movies no one can be bothered to do a write-up about.

Whoa, relax. My read on the idea was similar to yours, except I thought "movies that exist" really needed to be productions that came and went without little to no notice. (Gamblor's entry above is a perfect example).
From that angle, popular movies don't fit. And "The Ugly Truth" was a widely seen and discussed, no matter what anyone here thinks of it. That's all I was trying to suggest.
If you're making a distinction between "movies that nobody cares about" and "movies that nobody on Match Cut cares about," that's a different story. Personally, I think it's a bit less interesting.

See, I saw it differently. Gamblor's example points up a different sort of film, in that Fireflies in the Garden didn't just come out to little fanfare - it came out to no fanfare whatsoever. It was unceremoniously shat out by the studio into a tiny number of screens, most likely to satisfy a contractual obligation for theatrical release. I don't think this is as much fun: almost nobody remembers it because almost nobody had the opportunity to remember it.
I think it's more fascinating to see films that we can't remember that nonetheless got a push, and got talented (mileage may vary) A-listers, and opened on big screen counts, and did a fair bit of business, and then get condemned to apathy a week after arrival, doomed to a sad legacy of late-night TNT fests, where people of almost any stripe click on the info button and remember that, yes, that was a movie that existed.

I'm still floored over the revelation that Fireflies in the Garden exists. I've now watched a trailer, read a synopsis, read a bad review and found on Boxofficemojo that this thing was released in November 2011 and made $70,000. It really happened! Where the hell did this thing come from? I'd like a poll of Match-cut to see how many people knew this movie existed before Gamblor posted it. Cannot possibly be more than 4% of the posting population who knew.

My only issue with that take is that it casts too wide a net. Half the movies made with big stars would fall into the category (and with someone like Nicolas Cage, that percentage might rise to ninety or so).
It also depends too much on generational reference points and ignorance. If you were born in 1995, than the early films of Jeff Bridges and Harvey Keitel might feel downright obscure to you, no matter how well known they really are. Likewise, Qrazy's ignorance of Kiss the Girls or Shoe's ignorance of Jagged Edge is independent of their impact.
If you're extending the category to be more-or-less "forgotten" movies, then you up talking about a majority of most films that are ever made.
Most of what people create becomes less important over time.

This is why my original post carried over my agitation - because it's a silly-ass thread, and the variety of responses made it clear we were casting a wide net, and I wasn't expecting someone to step in and vouchsafe my contributions with box office statistics and the meaningless vagary of "lotsa people."
Maybe part of this agitation is simply my incredulity that someone would say, "Hey now, let's not diminish the cultural permeation of The Ugly Truth."

I think it's more fun than straight up silly, and an interesting topic for discussion around movies. (And yeah, getting contradicted can be annoying. I get that.)
But if all answers are permissible, then why did half dozen people jump on Duke when he suggested You've Got Mail? Or check Qrazy when he impled Kiss the Girls was obscure?
I don't -- and didn't -- mean to pick in you, Damu, but even if you vehemently disagree with a post, isn't that ultimately more interesting than a forum where everyone constantly agrees and parrots opinions back to one another?
Maybe part of this agitation is simply my incredulity that someone would say, "Hey now, let's not diminish the cultural permeation of The Ugly Truth."
My 'meaningless vagaries' (now who's fact checking?) were based in the dozen or so articles I read at the time of this movie's release, mostly by female journalists and feminist bloggers, decrying its crudity and shitty worldview.
The box office citation was meant to point out that, holy shit, a lot of freaking people paid to see this movie in the theaters, despite its 14% rotten critical pasting.
A movie isn't forgotten simply because M-C didn't see it or talk about it.

Casting a wide net doesn't mean casting an ocean-sized net. There were some barometers people were working off of, like critical acclaim and significant popular success that extends beyond what simple market saturation can accomplish.
I don't -- and didn't -- mean to pick in you, Damu, but even if you vehemently disagree with a post, isn't that ultimately more interesting than a forum where everyone constantly agrees and parrots opinions back to one another?
It's not like there's no middle ground. We debated in good spirits regarding Miss Maddow a few days back. My confusion was that your rejoinder seemed out of place and inconsistent. On the latter point...
My 'meaningless vagaries' (now who's fact checking?)
I pointed that out because of the immediate discordance between empirical statistics and anecdotes. It was like hearing someone say, "You don't think McGwire is a good baseball player? The man hits 36.4 homers per season, and some folks talk about him." My brain got whiplash.

Imagine what kind of deformed homunculus would be spring from the loins of Billy Crystal and Bette Midler IRL.
Am I alone in being positively creeped out by pretty much all aging actors who spend waaaaay too much money on plastic surgery in an effort to stay eternally young?
Whatever happened to aging gracefully?

I saw The State of Things recently, with Sam Fuller playing a cameraman, and I don't think I'd heard of that film even once before.Although it didn't make as big of a splash as Paris, Texas or Wings of Desire, it did win the Golden Lion. That's not nothing. In any event, to my tastes it's one of Wenders' very best.

Funny thing is that 90% of the movies on Netflix watch instant are like this. Looking for a popular critical darling? Netflix probably doesn't have it. Looking for a straight-to-video ABC Family Christmas special with once-famous-A-list stars and no RT consensus because only 2 critics saw the movie but neither bothered rating it? Netflix probably has what you're looking for. (A lot of the movies mentioned in this thread are on watch instant but your year-end favorites are probably nowhere to be found).
By the way, these movies exist:

It's hard to think of a movie I saw at least a dozen times in my youth as a "Movie that exists," but if you've never heard about it or only vaguely remember it from a trailer on a VHS tape in 1997, I guess it probably is, and I guess that's most people's experience?

Need to know two things then, since you're well familiar:
1) How the hell did you manage to see this movie a dozen times?!
2) What, exactly, is up with George Clooney's hair in that poster?

Yeah, he even wore that same hair cut as a badass criminal in From Dusk Till Dawn.
Guess for what role he first cropped his hair short the way he's known now? Yep, Bruce Wayne.
Sycophant
10-16-2013, 01:17 AM
The hair question's been answered, but as for how I've seen it so much, I was raised in a household where we watched movies often, but as a family nothing over a PG rating. Also, a house with a mother and two sisters. I saw a lot of romcoms and Disney movies over and over again. A dozen may be undershooting.
I remember as far as the contemporary romcoms we watched all the time, this was a pretty good one. No While You Were Sleeping, but pretty fun.

On March 11, 2005, Brian Nichols (David Oyelowo) escapes from the Fulton County courthouse in Atlanta, during his trial involving a rape case. In the process of the escape he murders the judge presiding over his trial, Rowland Barnes, as well as court reporter Julie Brandau. He also shoots Sergeant Hoyt Teasley while escaping from the prison, and then Special Agent David G. Wilhelm at his home. Nichols becomes the subject of a citywide manhunt. His frantic escape brings him to the apartment of Ashley Smith (Kate Mara), a single mother and recovering methamphetamine addict, whom he holds hostage. Smith gets through this time inspired by Rick Warren's best-selling book The Purpose Driven Life, while Nichols searches for redemption. As she reads aloud, Ashley and her would-be killer come to a crossroads.
