View Full Version : People of Match-Cut, I'm working on a sci-fi montage.
Dead & Messed Up

It's incredibly loose right now, and I'm still working out the broad things I want to hit. As of now, I have plenty of modern-day Anglophilic inclusions. So here's where I ask if you can think of some foreign and/or classic cinema, that would be fun to include.
Along those lines, I already have
2001
Akira
Frankenstein
The Host
The Thing From Another World
A Trip to the Moon
X - the Man with the X-Ray Eyes
I have some ideas: La Jetee, Metropolis, Godzilla, Alphaville, Ghost in the Machine, Fantastic Planet, and others.
Got inspired by Qrazy's awesome train-tracks montage a couple months back.
Suggestions so far:
The City of Lost Children
Forbidden Planet
Metropolis '01
Paprika
Solaris
Stalker

Needs more Solyaris, Avatar, Moon and maybe some Iron Man sequences? Like;

edit: I should probably read more carefully. Sorry I'll think of something you actually asked for. Tarkovskiy's Solyaris at least still qualifies.

My favorite foreign sci-fi film is City of Lost Children. Also, I presume there will be some Bladerunner in the montage?

Does anyone have a link to this? I must have missed it.

I've only seen bits and pieces of it but the Japanese animated Metropolis looks promising. Forbidden Planet.

Starcrash is desperately in need of a critical re-appraisal. I can imagine online scribes lining up to proclaim it a lost classic. "Starcrash admirably (laser) guns for the same heartfelt simplicity of Buck Rodgers, and its lo-fi do-it-yourself settings match the spirit of those trendsetters, unlike the gluttonous, cynical Star Wars pictures."

I don't know what kind of stuff you're looking for, but the first two that came to mind were:
Wall-E (specifically the sequence with him alone, on Earth)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (the dream sequence where his memory starts to fall apart)

I'm looking for all kinds of stuff - I want to basically take one or two images, max, from every sci-fi film I think is montage-worthy, and then play with the footage.
Good call on Wall-E and Eternal! Have officially integrated lonely Wall-E into the mix.

I'm actually trying something very different. And I kinda wanted to avoid this type of thing, which skews heavily towards the past ten years and favors some pretty crappy movies. This screams, "I'm a twenty-year-old who's okay at editing and stopped when I found enough trailer downloads online." I mean, seriously, Terminator Salvation?
I've been having a lot of fun finding unexpected links between movies, creating little thematic suites, and threading a loose sense of narrative through it all. You won't see this guy try to visually link The Rocky Horror Picture Show to A Clockwork Orange to X - the Man With the X-Ray Eyes to From Beyond. But I did. Cause I rule.

Yeah, that one is okay, but with a lot of these montages, it doesn't strike me that there's much of a relationship between any given piece of footage they link together. They are just using hyper editing to keep things flowing forward.
Which is not to diminish the amount of work they must have put into that, kudos for that at least.

Some. My Premiere is crashing constantly with all the different clips, so I had to break it up into three different projects, and I've had trouble finding the more esoteric movies, even with the library, but there has been progress.

I noticed:
1. No use of I Am Legend in the deserted street section
2. No use of Trinity and Neo in the kissing section

Love that deserted wasteland section leading into the romantic scenes. Perfectly fits with that portion of the Jupiter piece. Love the whole thing, but especially that part. And the musical break into the city skylines.
Really fantastic. I'll share it around where I can.
