As for Trys dienos, I'm going by its initial 1991 Lithuanian release, although I know IMDB has it listed at 1992 for its international film festival releases. It's significantly a 1991 film, however, particularly in its closeness to the establishment of Lithuanian independence through 1990-1991 as one of Lithuanian's first and most important post-Soviet independent films.
I'll also note that I had La Belle Noiseuse much higher in previous years (it sat at the top of my list of '91 and firmly in my top 5 of the 90s for several years ), but for whatever reason, it hasn't aged quite as well with me, or impressed me quite as much as the Carax, Bartas and Kieslowski's films have on revisits and reviewing.
Lastly, it seems criminal not to include Bill Viola's The Passing (I think I have it as one of the only 1991 films listed in my top 100 on my old blog) and Raise the Red Lantern, but they're completely on par with any film in my list (and Jarmusch's Night on Earth is up there) and remain in the shuffle of my frequent reordering of these lists.

No, the date next to the title should be the release date. IMDB uses the first instance of a public showing (like at a film fest, not a private showing for friends or studio execs or whoever) as their release date. I do think occasionally people fuck with these things since I do remember King of Comedy listed as 1982 a few years back because of some "Icelandic Film Fest" premiere, which seems unlikely and has since reverted back to being a 1983 film on IMDB.

It seems clear to me that years are used for consensus as an easy way to separate things into discrete piles and not as an attempt to capture the actual zeitgeist of the time.

Yes, in some polls, but in others, it's an attempt to do both.
It's also not the case that IMDB lists the first "public showing" next to the name, what they usually list is the first international showing (and sometimes the first U.S. premiere), and other times, it's even more arbitrary, when it's the first major international showing (i.e. Cannes, Berlin). IMDB doesn't even always have all the initial public premieres listed. It does a decent job of compiling data, but it's certainly not an expert science, and moreover, people were making consensus lists long before IMDB ever existed, and those lists probably tended to mirror something closer to an initial premiere (or whatever the "official" initial release date is) and by taking a particular release date as loosely correlated to cultural impact within a year.

I have no doubt that Three Day was released in 1991 in Lithuania, but until someone submits that information to IMDB, we should use the date that's there.

I think Duke is thinking of the US release date that you can only find by going into the release date section. Just use the date next to the title.

IMDb dates are used for two reasons:
1) So that a film's votes don't get split over multiple years.
2) So that we don't have to have tedious debates over a film's legitimate release date in every thread.

3) If you're actually voting on a movie wouldn't you want others to vote for it too? We're not going to vote for it if it's not IMDB year so... why don't you want you movie voted for bro?

Raise the Red Lantern - terrific study of repression in a brilliantly stylized world
I saw Raise the Red Lantern and Curse of the Golden Flower around the same time, and I was impressed by how Zhang used similar techniques (particularly his use of music and editing to create structural and thematic elements out of daily rituals) to achieve such different goals in the two films.

I dunno. When I discuss James Cameron, I love discussing his unerring sense of plot simplicity and direction. He manages to craft cinematic stories that demand continual build of action for their resolutions. If you watch Terminator 2 or Aliens, you're watching fantastic plotting. And considering how those films work first and foremost as breathlessly paced adventures, the plotting is key.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/thirdmango/Match-Cut/3a-double-life-of-veronique-double_life_veronique-12.jpg
The Double Life of Veronique (Krzysztof Kieslowski, 1991)
Yet another terrific movie. It's an ethereal rumination on the profundities of sensuous experience, fate, and human interconnectedness. My two favorite shots come relatively early in the film. In the first of the two, one of the two central characters sings in a choir as it begins to rain. The other singers appear to scurry out of the rain in the background, but the singer in the foreground continues to sing, sublimely, before looking up and smiling almost ecstatically. The shot is framed tightly around her, such that the rain almost appears to come from nowhere--what's important is her immediate experience of it. There is an overwhelming glory in this moment, a transcendent experience of the moment, of the pure, immediate and sensuous experience of it and its infinitude. The second of my two favorite shots is a view of buildings through a window. A distortion in the image, caused by the glass, moves across the frame, stretching and smearing bits of stone and grass is in its passage. It is almost as if the film is revealing something mystical, something beyond our grasp, hidden within or between the quanta of our experience.

2. Barton Fink
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/thirdmango/Match-Cut/2barton_fink_1991_685x385.jpg
The Coen brothers relish in tiny details, and they take this to the extreme here; a bell rings for a good minute; a suitcase thrown on a bed makes it shake; a fly buzzes, tormenting our writer's block-stricken protagonist. I'm not sure what it all means, but it makes for an incredibly tense film.

I watched The Silence of the Lambs for the first time today. Although it tells its story efficiently, I thought that it also did a good job with meditating on the moment when needed, binding them to your memory with imagery or sounds. Also, while Anthony Hopkins gets all the attention, I thought that Ted Levine was just as good. Creepy as all hell.

Bah we lost 10 posters.
5 were people I either didn't recognize because they left before I got here or someone I knew left a while back. The other 5 were people who participated in one or more of the recent threads, just didn't get into the list this week for whatever reason. There was also a lot more variety in movies this time around then last time.
