“The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. I mean, life is tough. It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at the end of it? A Death! What's that, a bonus? I think the life cycle is all backwards. You should die first, get it out of the way. Then you live in an old age home. You get kicked out when you're too young, you get a gold watch, you go to work. You work forty years until you're young enough to enjoy your retirement. You do drugs, alcohol, you party, you get ready for high school. You go to grade school, you become a kid, you play, you have no responsibilities, you become a little baby, you go back into the womb, you spend your last nine months floating...and you finish off as an orgasm.”

One of my favorite Carlin quotes:

The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

A lesser known actor:

Jerry Reed Is Dead
Burt Reynolds' Smokey sidekick was 71
Source: The Hollywood Reporter

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On a day when the film industry lost one of its finest voices, comes more sad news. Jerry Reed, the country western singer turned actor, has died aged 71.

Although primarily a singer/songwriter, Reed was perhaps best known to movie audiences for his appearances alongside Burt Reynolds in the Smokey And The Bandit movies. Reed played Cledus Snow, aka The Snowman, and proved so popular that he assumed the mantle of The Bandit when Reynolds declined to return for Smokey And The Bandit Part 3.

Born Jerry Reed Hubbard in 1937, Reed had his first real success with the self-penned song, Guitar Man, which Elvis Presley famously re-recorded (with Reed on guitar), but it wasn’t until the 1970s that he became a recording artiste of some note.

A close friend of Burt Reynolds, Reed appeared in W.W. And The Dixie Dancekings in 1974 and then Gator in 1976. A couple of Reynolds-free films followed, before Smokey And The Bandit came calling in 1977, with the sequel in 1980. As a sign of gratitude, Reynolds gave him a black Trans-am – just like the one from the movies.

After that, and after his lead turn in Part 3, Reed’s movie career – which you always felt was more of a hobby for him - faded away, although he did play the bad guy in Adam Sandler’s The Waterboy in 1998.

He died early on Monday of complications arising from emphysema.

RIP David Foster Wallace (http://www.latimes.com/features/books/la-me-wallace14-2008sep14,0,6215648.story)

David Foster Wallace, the novelist, essayist and humorist best known for his 1996 tome "Infinite Jest," was found dead last night at his home in Claremont, according to the Claremont Police Department. He was 46.

Jackie Morales, a records clerk at the Claremont Police Department, said Wallace's wife called police at 9:30 p.m. Friday saying she had returned home to find her husband had hanged himself.

Wallace won a cult following for his dark humor and ironic wit, which was on display in such books as "Girl with Curious Hair" and "Brief Interviews with Hideous Men." In 1997, he received a MacArthur "genius" grant.

Born in Ithaca, New York, Wallace was teaching writing at Pomona College.

Apologies for the length, but he was not a man of few words.

"All right, now we're coming to what I promised and led you through the whole dull synopsis of what led up to this in hopes of. Meaning what it's like to die, what happens. Right? This is what everyone wants to know. And you do, trust me. Whether you decide to go through with it or not, whether I somehow talk you out of it the way you think I'm going to try to do or not. It's not what anyone thinks, for one thing. The truth is you already know what it's like. You already know the difference between the size and speed of everything that flashes through you and the tiny inadequate bit of it all you can ever let anyone know. As though inside you is this enormous room full of what seems like everything in the whole universe at one time or another and yet the only parts that get out have to somehow squeeze out through one of those tiny keyholes you see under the knob in older doors. As if we are all trying to see each other through these tiny keyholes.

But it does have a knob, the door can open. But not in the way you think. But what if you could? Think for a second--what if all the infinitely dense and shifting worlds of stuff inside you every moment of your life turned out now to be somehow fully open and expressible afterward, after what you think of as you has died, because what if afterward now each moment itself is an infinite sea or span of passage of time in which to express it or convey it, and you don't even need any organized English, you can as they say open the door and be in anyone else's room in all your own multiform forms and ideas and facets? Because listen--we don't have much time, here's where Lily Cache slopes slightly down and the banks start getting steep, and you can just make out the outlines of the unlit sign for the farmstand that's never open anymore, the last sign before the bridge--so listen: What exactly do you think you are? The millions and trillions of thoughts, memories, juxtapositions--even crazy ones like this, you're thinking--that flash through your head and disappear? Some sum or remainder of these? Your history? Do you know how long it's been since I told you I was a fraud?"

'Dolemite' Comedian Rudy Ray Moore Dies at 71 (http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/20081020/dolemite-comedian-rudy-ray-moore-dies.htm)

Comedian Rudy Ray Moore, better known as "Dolemite", reportedly died on Sunday at the age of 71 from diabetes complications, according to media reports.

The death of Moore was first reported by EURweb and the site claims to have been informed of the news by comedienne Luenell, a friend of the Moore family.

Moore, whose actual name was Rudolph Frank Moore, is perhaps best known as "Dolemite," the uniquely articulate pimp from the 1975 film Dolemite, and its sequel, "The Human Tornado."

Rudy Ray Moore was also known as the "king of the party records" and released several comedy records during the 1960s and 1970s. His style is considered to be even more rude and explicit than contemporaries like Redd Foxx and Richard Pryor.

In 2008 Rudy Ray Moore reprised the character Petey Wheatstraw for the song "I live for the Funk" which featured Blowfly and Daniel Jordan.

"Christina's World" is gorgeous, surely, but his whole breadth of work captured that sublime feeling of distress through distance and rustic imagery.

Perhaps it's why I enjoy this piece so much, as well, as his counterpoint:

After checking a few sites for her biography, I think your assessment of her character is a bit extreme.

Why?

She was the one who got in trouble for racist comments on the show, and just doing an image search for her turns up pictures of her naked on "Big Brother".

Excerpts from her career page on Wikipedia...

In January 2007, she was a housemate in Celebrity Big Brother.[7] During the show she was accused of racist bullying against Indian actress Shilpa Shetty.[8] Following her eviction from the show, she admitted her actions had been wrong and she subsequently made many public apologies.

When she appeared on Big Brother 3 Goody became a target of ridicule in the British tabloid press[14] for displaying a severe lack of general knowledge for a British native. Goody thought that the English city of Cambridge was in London.[15] On being told that Cambridge is in East Anglia, she assumed that to be abroad, and referred to it as "East Angular".[16] She also was criticised by the tabloid press during her time in the Big Brother house for an evening during which she cavorted drunk and naked [17] and also was criticised for "backstabbing".[18] She avoided eviction long enough to outlast the media's apparent resentment and become popular. She also provided what was believed to be the first instance of sexual contact in Big Brother UK history, with a drunken grope with fellow housemate PJ, though it is unclear what sexual acts, if any, took place

Goody signed up for the 2006 London Marathon.[21] She did not finish the course, collapsing after 34 km (21 miles) of the 42.195 km (26.2 miles) and was taken to the Royal London Hospital to recover overnight.[22] Before the race, Goody described her preparations to TV chef, Gordon Ramsay. "I've been eating curry, Chinese and drinking." Afterwards, she explained:

"I don't really understand miles. I didn't actually know how far it was going to be. I'll be honest, I didn't take it seriously which is really bad of me because there's people out there who actually want to do the marathon. I didn't realise how much commitment the marathon was. I had four training sessions, that's all I did. At most I could run half an hour on a treadmill.

Chambers, whose given name was Marilyn Briggs, was once a model for Ivory Snow. She was among the first porn superstars when the stag films of the 1940s through 1960s gave way to the more polished sex films of the 1970s.

An icon of the golden age of porn, when movies had plot, and not every release was 2 hours of a barely legal teen getting plowed.

My favorite thing about Bea Arthur is that she would go to these Friar's Club celebrity roasts and inevitably someone would make a joke that would go something like ... "I wouldn't fuck her with Bea Arthur's dick." And then they would cut to a reaction shot of Bea Arthur giving that "Oh you naughty boys" look. I always thought that was really cool of her.

Two heavy-hitters in the literary world went this past week: J. G. Ballard died today (http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/apr/19/jg-ballard-author-dies-aged-78) in England of cancer

I expected this just about every day for the past year. Every time I'd visit ballardian.com, I expected to see his obit. He had been sick for so long.

The realm of speculative fiction will never be the same because of him, and he will never, ever be able to be replaced.

He was a one of a kind author who had very, very few, if any, peers.

Truly one of the the most important voices of the English language, and it is a shame how little he is read these days.

I know there isn't anything wrong with, eh, autoerotic asphyxiation, but it's a crap way for a great actor to die because now, everytime he's mentioned, it will be most likely as the guy who encountered DEADLY KINKY SEX IN BANGKOK.

It's a fucking waste. I'm a huge fan of Kung Fu, watched the re-runs my entire childhood summers, and I've seen some pretty awesome Carradine roles on recent years: union leader "Big Bill" in Boxcar Bertha, Frankenstein in Death Race 2000, the lead in that weird Bergman Holocaust film, the wise-ass New York police in Q and, finally, Bill, leader of the DIVAS.

Another Kung Fu actor passes away:

Bruce Lee co-star Shih Kien dies at age 96 (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090605/ap_en_mo/as_hong_kong_obit_shih_kien)
By MIN LEE – 1 day ago

HONG KONG (AP) — Veteran Hong Kong actor Shih Kien, who played Bruce Lee's archrival in the 1973 movie "Enter the Dragon," has died at age 96.

"With his death, Hong Kong has lost an outstanding performing arts talent," said acting Hong Kong Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Gregory So in a statement.

Shih died Wednesday afternoon at a Hong Kong hospital with his children by his side, the Ming Pao Daily News reported Friday. The cause was kidney failure, the Apple Daily newspaper said.

Shih made his film debut in 1940 and went on to act in about 350 films, most notably playing villains in films about Chinese folk hero Wong Fei-hong, according to Ming Pao.

He was best known to Western audiences for playing the evil martial arts expert Han in "Enter the Dragon." In the movie, Lee's character is hired by a foreign government to infiltrate Han's island and seeks to avenge his sister's death by Han's bodyguard.

Hong Kong's movie industry mourned Shih's death, with "Infernal Affairs" star Tony Leung Chiu-wai saying he was a big fan of the late actor.

"I grew up watching Uncle Kien's movies. He's an actor I admire and respect a lot. I'm very sad that he has passed away," Apple Daily quoted Leung as saying, referring to Shih by his nickname.

Professional Wrestler Mitsuharu Misawa has died. (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=4258830)

He was 46 years old. 46 years old!

Misawa was the best wrestler you've never heard about. The guy was like, Hulk Hogan popular over in Japan, and for good reason. Many wrestling nerds refer to him as the best wrestler (from an ability standpoint) who has ever lived.

Man, I need to dig out some of my old rasslin' tapes. He's been in so many epic matches, it's unreal.

Or what makes a great wrestler to anyone? The most entertaining matches are typically slimmer guys that can do a bit of acrobatic stuff on top of the power.

Psychology, sir. Psychology.

bac0n

Misawa was pretty much the complete package. He had charisma, he had technical acumen, he had endurance, he was generous in that he was willing to put other guys over if that told a better story, he was willing to take nasty moves (which is what ultimately caused his death, I'm sorry to say) as well as dish them out.

But I guess his best attribute was, like Milky Joe said, his ring psychology - his ability to tell a story through wrestling - to make the crowd believe that he was in a battle for his life, to rally the crowds behind him when he was on the brink of defeat, and to blow the lid off the joint when he scored that final, hard-fought 1-2-3. He was peerless in that regard.
