Spinal

Submit your five favorite films and five favorite performances from this year and in a week I will give you a top ten in both categories. IMDb dates will be used.

The point system is as follows

1st Place-5 points
2nd Place-4 points
3rd Place-3.5 points
4th Place-3 points
5th Place-2.5 points

10.5 pts will be required to make either list.

There will be no restrictions on short films.

There will be no distinction made between male and female performances.
There will be no distinction made between lead and supporting performances.
Voice acting can be considered a performance.

I would like to be able to count votes as they come in. This means that if you change your vote, you need to make a new post. Please quote your old list and then add your new list so that I can easily track the changes. I will not be looking for edits. Once you make a post, consider your vote cast.

You may begin now.

I would be extremely happy if one other person besides myself and Brights watched Salt for Svanetia before the week is out. I will do as Brightside did and offer up KG ratio for this to be seen.

I watched People on Sunday, The Blue Angel and À propos de Nice all in the last few days, and none of them made my top five! The Blue Angel is the most disappointing, because I love the art design and the atmosphere, but I find the story pretty dumb.

Blood of a Poet is 1932 now? Too bad, because I expect it to have stiffer competition that year.

"Performances" huh? This is not a good year for cinema performances....I'm just going to list actors whose scenes I remember well since the actor must have made an impression on me.

1. Emil Jannings (The Blue Angel) - overshadows Dietrich
2. Marlene Dietrich (Morocco) - overshadows Cooper

4. Greta Garbo (Anna Christie) - sad and depressed Greta
5. Louise Brooks (Prix de beauté) - shining and shimmering

I think we'll make a stop back in 2000 before heading to '91. A little different than what I initially laid out, but I want to get back to one that more people can participate in.

How about doing the same kind of breakdown of the 1930s? It would allow more people to vote. I'll probably skip much of the 30s otherwise.

Start watching more old films? ;)

It's already going to be hard for me to compile lists for the twenties. I hope to not have to make tough decisions over what to leave off for another decade's worth of films.

I've tried. Actually I haven't. But I was just using myself as an example (and I've seen more than 5 movies from each year in the 30s, but not that many I'd want to vote for). I think the voter turnout for the 30s was pretty low 4 years ago, and I'd expect it to be significantly lower this time around. We've already got several people dropping out in the 40s and 50s. More votes = more interesting thread to look at.

What bothers me most is that it's become most apparent to me doing these lists at how many people we've lost at this site over the last four years.

Another alternative is to maybe keep the older lists open longer to give people a chance to see some films from those years before they are tallied? Of course I have nothing to do with these, so I'm just throwing out ideas. Spinal should do whatever is best for Spinal.

Yah, it's not easy recruiting new blood, is it? It's not even easy to get different forums to cross-pollinate. All we can do is try.
