But this is actually pretty good. It's not a revelation in any way, but what it does, it does extremely well. Watch if you want a BBC drama as much as you want one of those tolerable "classy" ghost movies.

But Murphy has a good sense of his story and some rich themes of survival-guilt and corporeal self-worth (as manifested in subject matter of wartime, school boy life, and nascent feminism, with a dash of sexual healing and colonialism), and it shows in some very apt mise en scene and striking emotional attentions. Less interesting are the pretty generic scares and creepiness, but at least it's not moronic scares. Nevertheless, Murphy has very little interesting to do with the "horror" part of it.

It's pretty derivative of a certain film, but while the convolutions and final revelations will annoy many of you, it results in the film's best sequence (of a complex, operatic nature) and a rich emotional ending.
