It is my understanding that Kubrick himself didn't really like this movie, but I am just in awe of a scene like this that uses thousands of extras. I feel, in a lot of ways, that Hollywood filmmaking today has reverted to the inferior methods of the 30's and 40's, when almost everything was filmed in soundstages (for example, the war film Sergeant York was filmed mostly indoors). Now, I think most of the soldiers would be CGI and the main actors would do most or all of the scene in front of a green screen.

I've been able to participate in the last two or three, and yet I haven't really had the time to hunt down scenes. Maybe later. Kubrick at this point is one of my favorite directors, and I think I might dig him more than I like Spielberg, although its a toss up between him and Allen, I think. I just realized I don't have a favorite director per say, though.
