I liked Deserter's Songs a lot when it was released, but I find that album, and all subsequent MR albums, to be far too precious and cute now.

The David Baker era is where it's at. I'm sure after you listen to it all you'll understand why I always compare the Animal Collective crew to David Baker era Mercury Rev.

Make you try to get all the singles/EPs up through Boces as well. There is a ton of good stuff on those.

Boces is pure genius. One of the most relentlessly creative albums I've ever heard.

Those top three have dominated my stereo this year, outright crushing the competition. They've grown on me, which is not always the case with music I listen to a lot in short span.

I got into to DLJ through Yank Crime about a year ago. I don't know why I waited so long on the self titled album, which I think is nearly as good but less definitive.

I checked out The Ex on RYM. The youtube links were good shit. It's been difficult to find the albums, though.

I've been digging some bands from NZ in the past few years like The Verlaines, The Clean, Tall Dwarves, etc. I've been meaning to listen to The Bats for awhile but only finally gave them my first listen a couple of months ago with Daddy's Highway, pretty good stuff.

It depends what you're looking for, as their sound evolved significantly over the years. If you want the lacerating listening experience of gruesome raw intensity that made early Swans 'the early Swans', which I think is essential to understanding their later directions, I'd say start at the beginning with Filth.

I'd then check out White Light From the Mouth of Infinity and maybe Swans Are Dead, which is probably my favourite of their live offerings.

Swans have slowly become one of my favorite bands as I've checked out more and more of their work. I'd recommend starting with Children of God, which isn't necessarily my favorite but it's a crucial release in their catalogue that serves as a solid all-around intro to many of their different modes.

Earlier in their career, they were much rougher and noisier, that stuff can be very challenging but personally I love it. If you want a taste of that period maybe start with Greed.

My other favorites are Soundtracks for the Blind (a sprawling, all-over-the-place double album), their reunion album My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky, and the industrial-ish Holy Money. But really there's very little they've done that I don't love.
